Mercenary Kings on PS4: It's Contra/Metal Slug meets Monster Hunter

The brief bit I played way back in 'beta' was a lot of fun - definitely felt like it would be at home on a VITA screen (yes, I know it says PS4 - remoteplay).

i love the fact that i can purchase a game like this. old school style game. i can choose now if i want to play next gen games or chill out and play a game like this.

Anything that you would like to share about the game? I can't wait for it to be released.

Edit: removed earlier part of the post. I was thinking helldivers for a sec

I played this back when it was first released on PC. A bit grindy, but still a lot of fun with four players. The game never ran right on my PC, though (lots of weird frame skips).

I had a lot of fun playing it. The Monster Hunter comparison is apt, you go back to a lot of the same areas with different objectives. It can be stuff like killing a certain person, rescuing people, collecting a specific number of resources and so on.

It's quite difficult since your dude is quite fragile. I enjoyed it a lot.

If anyone is curious about the PC version and its' status, the devs have recently said the plan is release the complete version right around the same time as the Sony version.

Had a great Metal Slug meets Borderlands 2 feel with the quests and crafting. Everything was still very barebones, so I hope they fleshed it out a lot more - you could run through all the available quests in a couple playthroughs.

At the office, so I can't really craft a huge breakdown - I was also waiting for multiplayer to really dig in, and they hadn't implemented that by the time I 'quit'. If anyone knows if the PC version has since been patched to included this, I would be interested.

edit:
I hope there's a Vita version with cross-buy/play.

Can't remember where I saw it specifically, but the Dev's said a native VITA version isn't in the works yet, but may be at a later time. I think this was in conjunction with a picture they released on Twitter of it running on a VITA, which then spurred a lot of "AMG NINJA ANNOUNCEMENT" which they corrected with saying it was Remote Play.

Do you mean Local? Because the thing had internet co-op at launch. Bought it day 1 and spent most of that day dying and wasting my friend's lives counts. Unless they stripped it out to work on it.

There was nowhere near enough content for this game to be fun for more than a few hours on Steam. Not sure if that's going to chance at any point in the future, I haven't played it in a month or two.

Man that was extremely painful to watch, those player were beyond awful! Have they ever played a sidescrolling shooter? I really doubt it.
I don't see what's Monster Hunter has to do with it(i watched the video without sound but...), i just hope the level design is good, are levels random?

What kind of content do you mean?

As far as levels, PS4 version has 100 levels; early access Steam version has just 60.

The basic game structure is entirely based on MH. The hub, mission layout, and flow of accept mission -> kill target -> return to base with loot to craft stuff is very MH. Obviously the gameplay itself is totally different.

I kickstarted the game and played it when early access first went up. Kinda regret doing so since it was VERY unfinished, might give it another shot soon.

Oh, I've had this game in my Steam library for a few months now. Can't say I'm very fond of it. Bit too slow-paced for me. Charming graphics though, from what I remember.

Ok, but even rpg sidequests work like that, it's not an exclusive feature of Monster Hunter imo, if you say Monster Hunter i think about big monsters.

Looks neat but just give me a new Metal Slug on Vita and call it a day

I'd like that. When I first saw shots of this game I was interested, but was turned off pretty quickly on further reading. I'd much rather play a focused action game with visuals like this, but Metal Slug already has that covered!

I played the early access steam version a while ago. Really neat but the game needed way more variety. It felt a bit repetitive and grindy.

Yep, that's how I feel. I don't mind the grinding part but it really does need more variety in the mission types and stages. No complaints otherwise.

Think this was in Beta or something like that. You had to pay for early access on Steam or something. Is that a thing now?

Yeah, the game has been on Steam's Early Access for quite awhile now. You could buy it or if you backed its Kickstarter at a certain level then you got a Steam key to join the Early Access. It turns into the full game once its finished.

Sounds good but I really hope they rethink the reload system. Looking at the video, it seems it kinda clutters things when there's a lot on screen.

Ok but imo the Monster Hunter comparison is still too far fetched.

Could be worse, Shane could have compared it to Dark Souls for ultimate groan value.

Watching the video, Shane does state the act of collecting materials in missions to craft new stuff back at base is where the Monster Hunter comparison stems from. Not exactly the first thing people consider when that comparison is discussed, but whatever.
