You can't catch Lugia until after the E4, and you can't catch Ho-oh without also having caught Entei and Raikou. Holding on to the Master Ball that long instead of using it on Suicune would be a waste.

Of course you can catch Ho-oh before Entei and Raikou. The legendary dog Pokemons were one of the last Pokemon I catched when I played the game...

Then again, yeah, Suicune sounds like the most logical choice. To get Lugia we have to go through Gen II's version of the Seafoam Islands.
You can get it, you just get it later, IIRC.

If we can't beat Gen II's E4 without the help of box legendaries we clearly are worthless.
Indeed we did. Which was brilliant. But there is a minor difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 that may prove crucial in this matter, and that is the item bags. In Gen 1 our Master Ball was more or less safely stored at the bottom of a long list of items, which is why it was hard to actually use it when we didn't intend to. Now it will probably be first or second in the Pokeball bag. We will see how it works out...

Gen 4 seemed to have shot up in price recently as stores stopped stocking it over such a long period of time. I was a bit shocked as I was under the assumption they were still at a fairly normal price.

Doesn't seem that bad though. Once we get past the first house, we only need to move upward and never down, which is what made the Day Care and the last Gym of Gen 1 so hard. It wasn't trolls that ruined things for us then, but the lag.
