Twitch Plays Pokemon Thread 3: Return of Red... Aussies win again!

I would've been more interested in Crystal had they gone for the female protagonist.

The sad t hing about this compared to Pokemon Red was the fact Pokemon Red got that stupid religious backstory which made it interesting. So far, this is just the start of the Red run all over again, everything feels forced and it's just boring to watch. It'll get something cool happen and I've been watching on and off but it needs something like the fossil worship to return to it's former glory.

As a casual observer only, I got to say that my impression is that of the original run being akin to ones first amazing metal festival experience. Everything just kind of comes together, with awkward situations, bizarre events, memes out the whazoo, and a general naive outlook.

Then on your second go, you try to top it, but it just won't work. The bands aren't as impressive, the crowd isn't as interesting, the campsite is mostly full of dirt and thieves, the fun anecdotes are mostly just annoyances...

Reading some of the comments here, it won't make a difference if you change the game. TPP original run was a once in a lifetime event. Don't try to top it, or force the sequels to be a substitute. Just enjoy it for what it is and it's unique charme will arise naturally, or not.

Not as well written as some of the fan stuff from Red but still an interesting theory.

So they're trying to release Gator...

... Just so they can eventually have another obscenely overleveled pokemon eventually take its place like Bird Jesus and Zapdos.

Okay, whatever.

Wouldn't it be better to just move Feraligatr down the party list to give others a chance to gain exp, but still keep your OP poke in tough situations?

Asking too much and makes too much sense, so anarchy wins.

They just really want that underdog story again I guess?

We migght just lose a pokemon that can be taught both strength and surf. ? hes back?

I will say though this guy is way overleveled

Problem is the lore just isn't there. In Red the whole plot was born in a natural way from the weird things happening: Pidgey becoming overpowered makes him Bird Jesus, constant checking of the items lead to Red hearing "voices", the Fossil, first item that can't be tossed, becomes a God...

But Crystal isn't that far away in gameplay from Red, so due to the random inputs the same stuff happens again, in the end you have to reuse the same memes or to force new ones. That's why it's not working as well as before.

Also the game is somehow easier and the initial novelty has wore off.

It seems easy becus lazorgator has been killing everything in its path. It would have been the case for red too if it wasn't for THE EVENT. That was why bird jesus became bird jesus, not only is he overpowered, but he saved us in our time of need.

A lot of the appeal of the first stream was the idea of whether or not it could actually be beaten. I'm sure many of us expected some sort of road block, especially the E4. I think many people expected it's popularity to trail off, but it just became more and more massive as time went on. Even when Crystal launched, there were 80,000 people watching.

The memes also came naturally and the pictures that stemmed from it were amazing. Not to mention there were classic moments like the Giovanni battle, ATV the Dragon Slayer, the PC massacre etc. It was just one thing after another. The Crystal run has been a bit more relaxed in terms of events. Also it's true that many people are trying to force memes (myself included). Also I think while Crystal is a better games in terms of campaign and content, it is not as iconic as the original game. That stuff just sticks in people's memories for some reason.

I think after Crystal it should be retired. It had an amazing run and the original TPP will remain a nostalgic "I was there" moment for internet nerds everywhere.

Aww man... I don't believe Koffing got boxed! I wish we could have found a way to get him to level up instead of dying and having all that xp go to Gator.

Should focus on the left boulder first.

And we may as well battle that trainer there so we can deal with the gym leader with our Pokemon at better health when we eventually get to face the gym leader.

This gym leader shouldn't be too difficult, Primeape will probably go down from a single Surf and Poliwrath loves to combine Mind Reader with Hypnosis instead of Dynamicpunch for some reason.

I never understood how enemy trainers were put together in Pokemon games. Why only have a small number of Pokemon? Also, why do so many trainers have multiples of Gen I Pokemon in Gen II? It's weird.

So Crystal is basically the season 9 of Scrubs? :P

Everytime I try to watch this (even the original game) I just can't do it. Its so boring. In my opinion its not fun or exciting...it's just like watching a really bad simpsons episode. You wonder why you're watching it, and then you realize its dumb/boring etc; and you turn it off.

You usually have to watch a long time to see the exciting moments happen. I keep it on on my second monitor so I can glance at it and see what's going on. Although Crystal has had a lot less interesting things happen so far. Some have been good, like getting the radio card in anarchy. Or finally evolving Totodile/Croconaw.
