Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Honestly, a lot of the Brawl cast got changed enough that they feel more "complete" now. This isn't some thinly veiled "lolSakurai" kind of observation either. A lot of changes seem to take the original ideas in really awesome new directions. Project M Pit is very easily my second favorite character in the context of platform fighters and could almost give based Marth a run for his money.

With that said, while I can understand the hang ups you might have, I'd really like to know what you mean by "playing another series" when playing the modified Brawl members in P:M. The casts' changes all look and feel like things the series could have either introduced themselves over time or things that were natural extensions of what they could do in vBrawl.

some people are complaining about Lucas' charge or Zelda's buffs of all things, I'm pretty sure it's not about what has changed so much as it is that they were changed at all

My question is whether any game after melee can attract a majority of the competitive playerbase. Sure, there's Project M, but that just takes brawl and pushes it in more of a Melee-speed focused direction. While Sakurai has mentioned he wanted to speed up this new smash as compared to brawl, it's clear he doesn't want to go back to the style of gameplay found in Melee. Taking out tripping and changing up the mechanics have all been positive signs, but does the greater community want anything that's not melee?

We won't know until the game comes out, but I'm hoping this game has a better chance due to some of the changes that have been implemented. I think Melee will always be played, but it's my hope that we can get a more unified base around the next game.
I don't think there's any chance this game will replace Melee, but I believe both can exist as viable games in the competitive community.

Truthfully all smash 4 needs to do to win the hearts of many is to take the good from both melee and brawl. Faster than brawl but not as fast as melee(fine with wither), as balanced as humanly possible, Less floaty, and overall good mechanics.

Honestly, Lunar, that's been one of the more interesting questions I've wanted to see answered since the Melee/Brawl schism happened. I want to see how much of Melee has to be retained in a newer game for Melee players to embrace it (and maybe even prefer it) over Melee.

Interestingly enough, I personally don't think it's possible for something like this to happen even if a future Smash was Melee 4K edition starring everyone Nintendo ever. It's like how Super Turbo is still a game people will jump up and play/revere even with different fighters out in the same Street Fighter franchise. Sometimes, a game just gets that entrenched within a community.

Lucario feels like he's straight out of Street Fighter. Snake without Nikita feels awful. Just two examples. Other characters also play NOTHING like their SSBB counterparts. Pretty far off from their original goal to make Brawl more like Melee while retaining the geberal feel of the characters. Now they may even add in completely new characters. The changes are too drastic.

Yeah, I'm not looking to get a replacement, just to get a new game in the series that doesn't cause such a drastic schism. It's hard to tell whether the schism was caused due to Brawl objectively being a worse game or the fans just being so used to melee that they didn't want a new game unless it was significantly close Melee in design. This is because brawl does have some semi-serious issues that are pretty anti-competitive, so it's not hard to sympathize with the competitive community's distaste for it.

Fighting games are a genre where you can't change too much or the community will just stick with what they know. Sakurai has constantly expressed that he very vocally detests doing the same thing over and over again just because you have to. Brawl was those two opposites butting heads.

I don't think legacy games count, because SF4 has definitely taken over as the main game

I actually psuedo-dropped Lucas to pick up Fox because I was slightly mind fucked by his new stuff even though it isn't radically different from before. Literally the only things the P:M team did outside of the new charge move was make him heavier and change his up tilt. If he was in Melee he'd probably be a god.

I'm probably going to put more time into him soon though. I'm the worst kind of character loyalist. :P

The Zelda bitching is hilarious though. Kinda reminds me of how people react to MorriDoom in Marvel. I like it though because it's emphasizing a style of play (trap zoning) that never really got explored enough in the series.

Has anyone ever noticed that the stupid "Super Smash Bros for Wii U" and "Super Smash Bros for 3DS" titles are actually SECRET PUNS.

Super Smash Bros "for" = SSB4

I bet in Japan they think they're bein super clever there.

I can tell you about 99% of the Smash 64 community isn't looking forward to and/or has no hope for the next Smash. I'm sure the same can be said for the Melee community lol

Project M Zelda is a love hate thing for me. Love all her changes especially din fire trolling and playing with her. Loathe fighting her with peach.

Come on man, comparing Project M Zelda to MorriDoom?
That's weak, Zelda wishes she were that good

Nah, all SSB4 needs to win the hearts of many is to have playable Ridley.

*runs*

And that's fine, those communities can go on being those communities. I guess the true question is whether Smash 4 (god, I wish it had a subtitle, this is so fucking annoying) can break the brawl slump and form a decent competitive community. It's not so much whether those communities will migrate over, but more about whether it can cultivate a new competitive following based on its strengths alone.

I love Zelda in P:M. She's an amazing character with din fire tactics. Yeah, I ended up maining her in Project M because random kept giving me Zelda. NO REGRETS!

Yes. Make your own RSBE01.gct and only include the code to replace costumes. Load that via GeckOS. Just like in the old days before even Brawl+ and stuff. Based PhantomWings

I have no clue how to do this. I was hoping there was something I could just load to an SD card and load up.

Only played it once but P:M's new movesets were too weird for me since I'm too used to Brawl. In particular I didn't care for Wario and Lucas just weirded me out (the only thing I flat-out disliked was the dinky new PK Freeze).

Oh, I'm only comparing reactions, not general strengths.

The only reason I can't play Zelda is because I love mobility far too much and Zelda moves like someone forgot to switch her from "damsel in distress" to "please go faster" mode.

And nobody really cares. The game will still move plenty units.

EDIT: I get you weren't trying to say anything substantial, but you can't really speak for that many people lol

Yes because:
the 64 community is far more isolated
^

The next Smash being released probably won't have much impact on the 64 community's userbase, but it might for Melee. Personally, as long as I have a great Smash game to play online (64) I'll be fine.
And nobody really cares. The game will still move plenty units.
lol People sure get touchy. Wasn't commenting for those purposes, but rather just to throw a perspective out there.

Hm. Alternatively you could just download Brawl+. That at least would spare you from having to search for codes. Then all you'd still have to do would be to drag and drop the costumes to the right place.

But why don't you just look for a youtube or any other tutorial. It's not that hard.

I've been thinking: We've been getting 2-minute-long reveal trailers for all newcomers, and sakurai has done a fantastic job of giving them worth reveal trailers that build upon their history and character, or provide great fakeouts/humor (rosalina/wii-fit trainer).

This begs to question.... a lot of characters that people want in the roster, are they WORTHY of a reveal trailer? Is someone like, say, impa, worthy of a reveal trailer? If not, do you think that means that character won't be included simply because a reveal trailer would be nothing special, or maybe they'll be relegated to 'secret' character, like wolf, toon link, or jigglypuff (which had the worst 'intro' trailers in subspace)?

Should we be making assumptions about newcomers based on how well they could be represented in a 'reveal trailer'? Should we start thinking about what kind of reveal trailer would be best for each newcomer we want?

How do you reveal palutena? Kid icarus uprising fakeout? Kid icarus uprising Nintendo-Video-Style anime trailer?

How do you reveal chrom? Serious fire-emblem-awakening-esque cutscene? Fire emblem history style trailer? Army led by marth faces off against army led by chrom?

Do characters like mewtwo get reveal trailers, or are they relegated to veteran update style?

... this is a pretty weird reason for them to pick characters upon. You can spin an interesting character out of most trailers. Mewtwo awakening at the bottom of Unknown Cave, Paleutena seeing Pit getting his ass handed to him by Mario and deciding enough is enough etc.

No. That would be a shallow reason.

Definitely, if people want to. Let people's imagination run wild.

I'm not savvy with this stuff lol. Maybe there are YouTube vids to help?
This page should hopefully cover the Gecko method. (Gecko is basically like action replay codes for Wii homebrew)

Riivolution is a pretty easy to use, also has advantages like no size limits and being able to replace more complex files. You'll need to find an XML file for it since this is basically the file that tells Riivolution where the files are on your SD code and which files on the game to replcae. Googling should provide one. THen it is a case of putting files with the right name on your SD card.

If you are an NTSC user this should be pretty straight forward. PAL users unfortunately have it a bit harder. If you are a PAL user I can help with the other difficulties. It's been a while since I've fiddled with this stuff but I can't see it having changed much.

I actually like how they present the reveals so far.

With Rosalina we all got trolled

and with Mac it was hyped from the beginning

Thanks I"ll take a look at it.

I'm just making this stuff for random characters.

Ridley - Samus is out doing her thing. Battling various enemies, destroying them left and right. When it seems to be almost over, Ridley comes out of no where and attempts to attack her, and then cue "Ridley Joins the Battle" thing.

Palutena - Something along the lines of Pit needing back up and Palutena herself joins the battle.

Pac-Man - Someone posted about a Luigi's Mansion like thing before which was clever. Luigi is out hunting ghosts and finds some weird yellow pellets around the mansion. He continues on with the ghost busting and then out of no where Pac-Man appears and is chasing the ghosts to eat them.

Anyways, instead of making this post useless, could this be Little Mac's Side-Smash?

ibbZj6jf5rJ79M.gif

I'm guessing no because the leg stance is different and the colored streak seems to fade earlier in the POTD, while the GIF has it fade later. When I say fade, I mean end.

"meh" is the new "It's nothing!!111"

Up smash, son

Your "community" doesn't even exist. Only Isai does. Can't be competitive if none of you guys are any competition to him :P
wat. Just because he wins the few major tourneys doesn't mean no one else is competitive to him. He hosts streams every Tuesday and loses to "above average" players.

Tournaments are completely different settings (tons of Pika/Kirby players, using what works best just to win, etc.). The gap between Isai and all players isn't as drastic as you may think these days. Not to mention, I guess many communities don't exist for other franchises where the same select few people place in the top spots lol..
