Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

Gonna be weird playing this after the gorgeous Second Son visuals. Hopefully this is the last cross-gen game from Ubi.

Still hyped to play this, though.

From the (shitty quality) video:

Seriously getting an N64 game vibe.

That...is uh...bad compression, right?

Right?

Assuming the game is successful the bound to happen sequel will likely be next-gen only. Maybe in Watch Dogs 2 we will get something closer to the reveal.

Called this bullshit.

Let me spell it out to those still in doubt: that 2012 E3 reveal was 100% bull. shit. Forget the graphics, look at the animations, effects and overall sequence.

That was faked, and you won't be able to recreate that. This has nothing to do with how powerful your PC is, but with how misleading Ubisoft was from the reveal.

The Division's reveal was even more pathetic, cause of the "natural" sounding dialog and super smooth online gameplay.

You know just one generation ago games with a car might have looked something like this.

I say we've come a long way since those days.

what a horrible comparison. a screenshot from a budget Wii game to show how far graphics have progressed? Hell, the Wii itself is tech from the generation BEFORE last gen.

Taken from Italian preview trailer.

That surely can't be PS4, GTA5 looks better than that on last gen.

I don't know, that one looks decent. From the shitty quality of the video, the texture and hair seems detailed, the trees have detailed leaves, ground looks nice.

Not E3 2012 reveal, but not nearly as bad as the OP's gif.

The reason character models are not downgraded is simple: It is not so easy to redo them in a lower poly tier once they are done and it is not a low hanging fruit that will up your framerate a lot.
The character artists get limits to work with and that's it. Those character models you see in cinematics are probably like a level 1 LOD, then when you are in game you are level 2 and when they are far away level 3 LOD.
Cutting the poly count in half is not doing the same wonders as doing global tweaks/downgrades to view distance for dynamic shadows, lighting and pfx and most of the time performance in talking-head cinematics is fine cause it is a controlled environment so the models can be at full LOD.

The reason a lot of these reveals look the way they do is that the first thing of a game that is "showtime" ready is a visual art milestone. Basically a "wouldn't it be nice if it would look like that and play with those features put in?" target render level. The publisher wants something awesome, the art benchmark LOOKS awesome, so this is what is shown first.
But then the harsh reality of making and optimising your first next-gen open world game with 1.5TF GPUs sets in.

Lets hope the new engine they have for The Division does magical things with LOD. It could very well be that that superbusy street section was the art milestone and the breakable cars everywhere was basically a wishlist game mechanic. Fingers crossed it is the real deal!

I do see your point. I won't speak for everyone else since I do not know what everyone else is thinking. But for me, seeing what was promised in 2012 to what is finally coming in May is a huge disappointment to me. There is another thread that mentioned that there are problems with the AI. AI affects gameplay. So, the graphics have been downgraded and the gameplay might not be as interesting as promised in 2012. Not to mention that the game might have been delayed because GTA 5 being so well received. Ubisoft should have at least outputted the games resolution to 720p to retain the graphical effects shown in 2012. But even then that might not help if the gameplay is not as interesting as promised.

I understand the sentiment. I'm practically the king of hyperbole, which is why it surprises me so much of GAF seems to be on that train right now. And I totally understand the disappointment, I sourced on Watch Dogs pretty quickly when I saw the gameplay videos of what it seemed lots of it actually entailed (with seemingly incredibly boring side missions that were supremely poorly designed, as least from watching them), and I noticed the downgrade in past gameplay videos. It's clear cross gen development has held back what they could have done.

As long as it's cross gen, it was never going to be able to reach the heights of the reveal trailer. By the end of this gen, we will have open world games that look like that. But it won't be Watch Dogs 1. Maybe when we finally get a Watch Dogs game this gen which isn't still tethered to Wii U, PS3 and 360. :(

We will have to wait and see if Ubisoft ends up fulfilling their 2012 promise, or if we are going to have to wait for Watch Dogs 2 to get the 2012 game originally promised.

They never will hit their promise for this game. Even prior to this video, the game was downgraded from the initial reveal. It still looked decent, but not WOW. I think people wanted a wow. But it seems clear now inFamous: Second Son is the open world PS4 game to beat visually, no other comers on consoles have come close yet. Now to see if I can finally love the gameplay of an inFamous game with the third title :P

These are just the impressions that have been given based off what Ubisoft has revealed today. It is their fault for the reactions in this thread, and what is probably going to come when reviews hit.

Of course it is. I actually don't disagree they should take some shit. I just don't think the level of shit makes sense given the gif in the OP is not actually what it looks like on average.

I guess WD2 might see a similar jump as AC > AC2 did, but after seeing I:SS today on IGN , WD really suffers in comparison from a technical view point.

Ubi best hope their mock reviews come back more positive this time.

I am tempted to post numbers why this doesn't look anything like an N64 game, but logic has no place here.

Pretty fascinating situation brewing in here, though.

The environments look so lifeless in this game compared to what we thought it would be like. It is a multi-gen title so it shouldn't be that much of a surprise. I seriously dislike CGI trailers that get passed off as gameplay.

I hope The Division does not get downgraded this much as well.

Apparent downgrade is disappointing. But just watched the new trailer and it still looks decent for an early gen open world game.

Game itself still looks like it has plenty of potential as well so I'm looking forward to May.

I don't know if I would even say it looks decent. AC4 blows it out of the water (no pun intended) on PS4.

At least with Watch Dogs we know ahead of time that its not going to look like its reveal. With Aliens: CM we were left completely in the dark until Steam unlocked the game, followed immediately by shock and extreme disappointment.

Still, it was shady of Ubisoft to show us a version of Watch Dogs that we would never get. It would almost be bait and switch if we didn't have a chance to decide to not pay for it in its current form.

That can't be PS4, holy shit. Not just the car model and lighting (which is literally PS2 level) but look at the flat square buildings with the blurry textures. Wow.

If this is how the game ships I will not be buying it until it's in the bargain bin for under $10.

Ubisoft's deceitful "marketing" is disgusting. They know full well that the initial-reveal footage of their high-profile games is only a very vague target render that more or anything is a pipedream, and by know they already know the actual released game won't look like that. Except they keep doing it because it gets them attention.

The fact that not even the PC versions of games end up looking like the reveal footage (as evidenced by FC3) is even worse. When are they going to get called out on this?

haha the aisha taylor (spelling?) trailer, I almost forgot about that

at this rate it'll look like driver on the psx by the time they're done downgrading

that unlit warehouse or w/e picture looks genuinly much worse than wallguy

I've gotten every single game console at launch and was always about console launches but man I still haven't bought a next gen system and quite frankly don't even care to as of right now. Been completely underwhelmed with next gen offerings so far. First time ever!

Okay, I'll be fair to the game. I feel kinda responsible for starting this as I was the first to post a screenshot of the car. This is how the footage looks a few seconds earlier.

This section is pretty much on par with what they showed off last year (the car section). Just when they reach that bridge section and the spotlight where things take a turn for the worst.

Note: btw, this doesn't mean that I'm saying the game looks on par with the reveal.

It looks like PS2 level of car-graphics lol.

It isn't just the looks of GTA V ( which I liked a lot personally, especially the lighting/ day-night cycle was spectacular and I think it's amazing what R* achieved on current gen machines ), but the gameplay itself, made Watch_Dogs look dull. But...then again, that's my opinion.
The lighting was very impressive, especially on the systems that it is on.
Don't you think that you should give it a chance before saying that though? Videos can be misleading, I've hated games that I thought looked good and love those that looked bad to me.
