Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

I'm surprised how upset people are about this :o

Yes it is a downgrade but it isn't that much of a downgrade to be honest, only in a bit of the lighting, effects and probably resolution. Yes the demos from years back would of looked better because Ubisoft wouldn't of known the final hardware for the consoles nor the technical hurdles that both would produce. They should of maybe focused on just developing the PC version to the highest level and porting it down but that is probably farrrr too much work when you consider the amount of platforms they are aiming for.

All the demos from E3 were running on PCs that were trying to match that of what the consoles had to offer, obviously that would have slightly more power to show the game off in the best light (framerate + resolution). Hopefully the PC version does look mighty fine with some added IQ and maybe some higher performing effects such as DOF.

Saying all of the above the recent gifs from the updated gameplay looks fantastic, not as good as Infamous but still mighty fine! The crazy standards in which people get upset about stuff like this is getting beyond my comprehension xD

After seeing infamous this game really looks jarring and then to think they announced it with these beautiful graphics.

Better next time stop lying. I won't buy it anymore for sure.

What? I have a thing for pastels? Good thing Easter is coming.

But seriously, that gif looks way better than the car one. I don't know what to think. The lighting in that gif could use work, yeah, but nothing there looks absolutely horrifying like this thread seems to indicate.

There are some overreactions to be sure, but people are right to be disappointed with an obvious downgrade.

Must admit I would have been satisfied with the earlier build, but expected the PS4 to improve upon those visuals by the time it got released.

It is a shock that the game looks much worse.

That PS3 footage shown earlier on should have aroused our suspicions, but we kept on believing!

At least GAF is still interested in the game. Can't say that about other gaming communities. There is little hype for the game.

The initial reveal of the game had me quite intrigued, but since then my interest has plummeted. At this point I'd be shocked if I end up buying the game.

Yeah, that was never my issue. I agree that debut trailer was way better than what we're getting, and I assume that was what their target was back then. My thing is just people saying how bad the game looks, when it really doesn't look all that awful, especially for cross gen (and a non-Kojima cross gen) game.

"It's a GAF conspiracy to hate [insert game here]". Puh-lease.

Fact is Ubisoft should now be more aware by how closely scrutinised these games are! There's no way Ubisoft would have shown us 'dodgy videos' in their official trailer - if anything the main game will look worse! Incredible.

I applaud GAF for calling them out on this so that it does not happen in the future. Companies have already been warned about false advertising on TV, legislation for early builds or 'preview footage' will come into play very soon in my opinion.

What are you, 12? they're getting a lot of hate here, I can understand why, but shitting on the good looking parts of the game as much as the bad looking, saying the game has no redeeming qualities whatsoever is hyperbole at it's finest.

People saying that the reaction to the downgrade is a little much... This isn't some game that was shown once and has now resurfaced. We've seen it be the highlight of multiple trade shows for multiple years. For a game being hyped up and shown off so much it's only natural to be dissapointed when the graphics take a steep decline in quality as the game is nearing it's release.

But you are right, it's misleading to use a gamepad on tech demo.

It is misleading, but using a gamepad is also practical for demos even if you are playing a PC. So they should explain that it is running on a PC indeed but mouse/keyboard setup may not always cater to such presentations.

Nothing, WD just became the "cool to hate game" here, but that is completely Ubi's fault for showing that bullshit presentation in 2012.

Cool to hate? This didn't even start until the footage reveal from yesterday. Everyone's been pretty excited about this game, delay or no. Not the fault of fans that developers didn't deliver on their original vision.

Is this a newer gif? It looks great.

Can someone post where this image is from?

You and all the people that say that the game looks and is gonna be fine are not getting the complaint. It's all about what they showed and promised. They shouldn't create expectations like that. Even if they were not It really looks like they were fishing for preorders!!!!

This industry needs to understand that showing a game more than a year before release is a mistake

I was ready to blind buy this game when it was released last year.

I'm now rethinking that.

And it's not just the downgrade in graphics. They said that the game wasn't fun. Can a game be made fun in six months? If the game wasn't fun, isn't that a problem at the design level? I have my doubts about being able to fix something like that in just six months.

Doubt it. There's not enough inventive nor is it that big of a deal in the scheme of things to warrant legislation. A lot of the false advertisement legislation is aimed at extenuating factors surrounding the product advertisement. Namely the well being of consumers being affected.

This is strictly, for them, a PR issue. We eventually can get the impressions through a variety of sources or new media releases that lift the veils, so these things sort themselves out on our, the consumers, end. They are the ones that have to deal with the effect of that resolution to their marketing practices, good and bad. It's on them to sort out what does and doesn't work regarding their image and the net outcome of said practices.

Unless I'm missing something crazy obvious, this is what they show at the end of the trailer:

There are no other console boxes at the end of the trailer. That would lead me to believe it's 360 footage.

uuumm, not true, it's been getting a lot of shitting on sice they first showed some footage that didn't match the 2012 presentation, and yeah I said this is Ubi's fault.

I wish game journalists would do this more often. Even the Last of us E3/Pax demo had some stuff that you wouldn't find in the game. So why not just ask? It doesn't even always have to be accusatory, just ask "hey how does it come that ... is different now?" and then the dev could give you some reasons.

It honestly doesn't even look that terrible, but if we're directly comparing it to footage we've initially seen then it's a huuuge step back. I expected this game to be the typical open world Ubisoft game with checkbox side-activities and a nonsensical story with its only saving grace being the stunning visuals they showed off, but with that gone I don't know if I can even force myself to be excited anymore.

And in typical Ubisoft tradition, I should probably wait for that $35 sale a month after it's out.

After looking at some of the newer footage I think the textures are nice but the lighting and shadows have nosedived off a cliff.

The lighting looks flat and many objects are missing shadows entirely. The shadows that are there look worse than GTA V's shadows.

they showed trailers with PS4 and PC package as well and the trailer was identical.

Wow, with the Wii U version also being delayed sadly this game seems to be following the exact same backlash path as Aliens: Colonial Marines - that's not good.

But honestly... though it might not be matching the original reveal footage exactly, the graphics seem to still look pretty decent to me.

What are you, saying a derivative insult that makes no sense in this context? Your inane statement aside, I don't think anyone reasonable is actually saying this game has absolutely no redeemable qualities.

Some people are disappointed that Watch_Dogs didn't reach its target vision. Unrealistic considering it's Ubisoft? Probably. But if the consumer is going to pay $59.99 for your title, you better damn well make them feel like you delivered on what they want.

Funny enough, I found a photo of the 2015 final version of the game:

OH shit is this syphon Filter!?!?!

LOL I loved those games so much. My friends and I use to always make fun of the shitty animation in that game....especially how it looked like he ran around with all the weapons up his ass.

I'd love a HD remake of those games....

This may sound slightly defensive. But do you think people are coming to dislike the actual disadvantages in next gen computing power?

I mean, yeah watch dogs looks worse (in fact... way worse). But given the open world nature of the game, is it that surprising considering what we know about next gen graphical potential?

Reaching 1080p 30 is still a problematic proposition as we have seen elsewhere.

Is watchdogs going to be the sacrificial lamb for next gen backlash? (game companies over hyping the machine's power is a more indirect way of causing this)

It has nothing to do with next gen hardware. We've seen Infamous running and it looks great. The problem is that the original reveal looked fantastic and now they're trying to pass a turd as similar quality. They deserve all the backlash they're getting.

With every subsequent reveal of the game it looked worse. But this looks terribly bland overal. Yeah, Ubi should be worried. It's gone from my must-buy list, that's for sure.

One could argue that the gameplay could still be its saving grace and that it doesn't look 'bad' per se, but that would be missing the point. WIP's should improve, not degrade over time. Fake footages and 'target renders' are an awful, bullshit practice which need to fucking stop.

Next time avoid the sarcasm if you want to be taken seriously, aside from that, I agree with your post.

Seems like people sre ignoring this over and over but I thought there was a confirmation of it coming from the PS4 build. Every time I watch it, it does look distinctly like a last gen game.

Something isnt right here.

So what happens if Take 2 and RockStar release a PS4/Xbox One GTAV HD release around the same time as this (a potential possibility).

I don't understand this reasoning.

"We showed off trailers of what the game looks like, but wait, the game actually looks different."

It's like they're trying to persuade us tooth and nail to buy their game, because after we shell out $60 then who gives a fuck.

After looking at some of the newer footage I think the textures are nice but the lighting and shadows have nosedived off a cliff.

The lighting looks flat and many objects are missing shadows entirely. The shadows that are there look worse than GTA V's shadows.

It's just inconsistent. Some areas and effects look good (smoke grenades, recent got making the rounds) while others are terrible (glass, the shootout footage, fire, the car/bridge scene).

And while that's somewhat par for the course with open world games, it shouldn't be to this degree when a number of these things have either been done or done better on last gen titles, both by Ubisoft and other third party studios.

But yeah it doesn't look that bad at its best in comparison to last year. Some things worse, some improved. It just looks really bad at its worst. I'm hoping that they truly have a locked frame rate and it was worth it gameplay wise.
