Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

I wonder if open world games are having a hard time with next gen consoles. The bottlenecks of system can affect the pipeline of huge areas. And maybe this is why we dont see GTA5 for PS4/X1 yet.

And Infamous probably will rise all the standards.

Chill out guys...

I can't believe ubisoft tried to sell us on an open world game with that much fucking detail with that level of graphics.

look at that shit.

That's just one street.

Jesus Christ. This is so obviously the PC version it is not even funny. Look at that object density, image clarity, GI everything...

Freaking out about a game's graphics two months before it comes out doesn't strike me as a productive use of time.

Come on man. I know you as an individual don't do it as often as the other editors/contributors, but this should be at the very least mentioned to the masses. If you feel it's beneath you, give a tip to one of the other guys posting articles about Twitch Plays Pokemon image maymays or reddit links.

It's not that the press has to be negative, but a sizable amount of people read the site, and this is heavily related to games and a pretty big deal. As a reader I'd love for somebody with that power to write "Hey the game promised to us in 2012 looks nothing like what the trailer shows."

We don't have a preview because we didn't go to Montreal. (Kotaku doesn't take press junkets.)

I'm just seeing this for the first time now, but do you guys really think "game doesn't look like it did at E3" is unusual?

This kinda goes beyond not looking like a demo. I actually think the Far Cry 3 demo people keep bringing up is a silly comparison, because when that was first shown I doubt the open world was even close to being fully laid out. Having a vertical slice of gameplay look better because that's all there is at that point happens a lot of the time.

But this... this is bigger. The E3 2013 downgrade was totally reasonable since the initial 2012 video was running on entirely speculative hardware. It still looked great in the 2012 footage - now, it doesn't even look good. Generally, downgrades (other than the Colonial Marines crapfest) are in orders of degrees, like "oh, the demo obviously ran on PC hardware because this game is more aliased" or "oh, they toned down some showy lighting effects here and there." The latest Watch Dogs footage is missing nearly everything that made the reveals look good.

I'm pretty sure the demo was built on a high-end 2012 PC, so it's not impossible for that level of fidelity to be possible.

Have ubisoft made any statements regarding what platform the downgraded gameplay was on ?

Now that you mention it... so far all I've seen is a tweet from Sony Denmark and some Italian webposting, which I don't think had anything to do with Ubisoft. If there's been any official confirmation from Ubisoft, I missed it. I don't remember them saying anything about it during the stream today, but if the new footage was last gen rather than current gen you'd think they'd be quick to point that out, very loudly.

this... fuc....

Mr. Engineer: We're going to build a bridge that is going to be amazing!

*bridge breaks down*

Masses: Hey that was a pretty shitty bridge. I can't believe you thought that was a good idea.

Mr. Engineer: When you guys can build a bridge, then come talk to me!

This fucking argument pisses me off so much. We can't criticize because we can't do it? My ass.

Wake up people. There is no way in fucking hell you come back after months of delay with a release date and have the footage you showcase be on anything but your best version.

Well, one can only hope that the old e3 reveal was based on the PS4's power on paper. And that devs, middleware or otherwise, just don't have a handle on gpgpu offloading yet. Coupled with the fact that it must be a huge amount of asset creation for a game this size as well. I see no reason why the game can't look like the 2012 reveal to be honest, there are a lot of middle ware development software solutions available.

Nothing against ubisoft, but the current footage should have been expected. They have been doing stuff like this since PS2/Xbox days, imo.

You're right. Because Ubisoft and other publishers are constantly lying to the consumer, we should just ignore it. It's not an important gaming issue like somebody's hair or the best cult movies you've never seen.

edit: Oh, the hair thing is an advertisement masquerading as a normal post. Speaking of dishonesty to the consumer...

I'd agree if the launch was in twelve months. What's supposed to change in two months, though?

If the game looks like a stark, immediately noticeable downgrade from E3 2012 in the PR footage Ubisoft has released to the masses to paint the game in the best light possible, then that's an issue worth bringing up.

See:
A (really) short rundown of what happened so far:

 • Ubisoft released a story trailer of Watch_Dogs, confirmed by PlayStation Denmarks Twitter to be from the PS4 version (-> 1080p, 250MB download here)
 • Ubisoft gave gaming magazines additional b-roll footage (as in video with straight gameplay, not meant for the public) that they can use in their video previews (like Italian site Every Eye did)
 • people immediately notice the downgrade from presentations at E3 2012 or Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
 • the damning GIF in the OP and this picture, among others, are taken from the b-roll
 • the b-roll footage is not confirmed to be from the PS4 version but Ubisoft could've shot down any speculations about it a long time ago (it's also highly unlikely they'd send PS3/360 b-roll footage of the game to gaming magazines)
 • instead, that's how they adressed the downgrade in a Twitch Q&A livestream:
"This asset (the trailer) has been created to convey the context of the game. It's something the fans wanted. In terms of graphic quality, I invite anyone to read the impressions of the journalist and it's pretty positive. We're in debug mode and we're fixing little things, the graphics are at no risk at all. I don't know why anyone thinks this." - approximate quote from the interview just now.

Feel free to add stuff if I missed anything important.

Those are pretty shitty gaming topics. I'd rather know what silly thing the guys of Twitch Plays Pokemon did next!

For once Kotaku could not be Slowtaku.

Jesus dude, step the fuck off. Yesterday morning it was being called a "leak". It was within the realm of possibility that there were two new tailers coming, and one them was to show what the last gen version looked like.

Are you assuming I'm coming down on you because I used a curse word? I assure you I'm not, and it's not about calling you out specifically.

Damn it all to hell lying fucks .... this is alien colonial marines all over again ..........

Well, I do have to study for some exams. But I guess it's good that people are complaining in the first place. Publishers shouldn't do that kind of thing. People love little details, that now seem to be lacking in the current build.

Even if it happens usually, we should complain. After all we're giving them our money basing on the "promise" shown to us at the reveal. They pretty much had it coming.
Right. I mean, I think it's totally valid to say "hey, this game looks nothing like Ubisoft made it out to be" when it comes out. It's still in development. They've got 2+ months left with this thing. I don't really think it's a good trend to freak out over how video games look before they hit store shelves, because it just encourages publishers to hide things and keep game footage under lock and key to avoid complaints like this. Of course, you guys can do whatever you'd like - but if you're wondering why you haven't seen many game outlets talking about this, that's one possible reason.

(I do think it might be fun to do a feature comparing how games looked at E3 to how they looked when they came out, though.)

Well that, and the fact that your post was so condescending in general. And it was a direct reply to me, after all. Not sure what I was supposed to think. Anyway, no hard feelings.

Yea, didn't they say it was launching May? Shouldn't it already be in QA process right now? Unless they are delaying it again, I don't think they will change from what is being shown.,,
