[*]the b-roll footage is not confirmed to be from the PS4 version but Ubisoft could've shot down any speculations about it a long time ago (it's also highly unlikely they'd send PS3/360 b-roll footage of the game to gaming magazines)

Feel free to add stuff if I missed anything important.

Nirolak is a rich money whore, Cyan sold his body for meth, bish pimps the mods out to video game publishers.

I've already openly admitted that I'm getting it on day 1. I still think it'll be a very fun game. But I like my eye candy, developers showing their shit off way too early is a major pet peeve of mine, and I'm also starting to have a real problem with cross gen bullshit. So I'ma bitch to my heart's content.
Well, i think the game will still be pretty goodlooking for a first year crossgen open world game. But ofcourse it will be completely blown away by other titles. Apparently now it has slipped down to Vice City level graphics to some. But that's the result of shit avalanche.

I hope Ubi learns from this. I don't mind they get shit for their bullshots and bullshit reveals. But i might still be able to enjoy the game. Visually too.

I agree with you.

Yet, I do have a problem. This problem stems from the fact that this game is not the same game that was shown and promised to the world during E3 2012 (the show where many journalists gave the game the "game of the show" award to).

I think this is the main problem for many in this thread.

If a PC is able to get the game to look like this on ultra high I will consider building my own gaming PC. I swear.

A (really) short rundown of what happened so far:

  • Ubisoft released a story trailer of Watch_Dogs, confirmed by PlayStation Denmarks Twitter to be from the PS4 version (-> 1080p, 250MB download here)
  • Ubisoft gave gaming magazines additional b-roll footage (as in video with straight gameplay, not meant for the public) that they can use in their video previews (like Italian site Every Eye did)
  • people immediately notice the downgrade from presentations at E3 2012 or Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
  • the damning GIF in the OP and this picture, among others, are taken from the b-roll
  • the b-roll footage is not confirmed to be from the PS4 version but Ubisoft could've shot down any speculations about it a long time ago (it's also highly unlikely they'd send PS3/360 b-roll footage of the game to gaming magazines)
  • instead, that's how they adressed the downgrade in a Twitch Q&A livestream:

Ah, crap. This game went from "Day 1" to "wait and see" after the 2013 demos, now it's "never".

I am really disappointed that the actual game looks so lifeless. The trees aren't moving, no objects are being carried by wind, the lighting is stale, etc. The game doesn't look bad, but this dynamic environment that is now missing impressed me the most back then.

I do agree that's a problem, and it'll certainly be quite a shame if the end result doesn't at least come close to living up to the promise of the initial reveal.

It's sad to see Watch Dogs went from being Captain America to Fantastic 4 for me.

And by that I meant. From most anticipated to a stinky pile of waste with questionable decisions that I no longer want anything to do with.

Seriously, I was looking forward to the Fantastic 4 reboot and this game so much. Now it's on the bottom of my most anticipated list.

Even the 2013 demos look better than the new footage, if I'm honest.

I would be happy if the game still looked like this, but the new trailer and GameSpot/Everyeye videos don't seem to hold the same fidelity.
Shadows looked pretty terrible at E3 2013, if I remember correctly. I think the game looks better now if that trailer is anything to go by.

hopefully developers fucking learn from this.

Don´t reveal a game until you actually have something that is playable and shows the graphics that we will find in the final product.
The E3 2012 fake trailer for the game, were did that game go? and to see magazines gave it "game of the show" praise, is also really sad. It´s no where near the same quality as we saw in the reveal.

Apparently the game does have Wind simulation as confirmed on that craptastic Twitch interview today.

Yep. That's me too. I'd love to be with the optimists who are still hoping that they just accidentally cut all around that stuff, and that it's all still in there, and that this new footage all just happens to be on a sunny day with still wind... but it's not a logical presumption.

It's plausible sure, but it's not the most logical reaction to what we've been shown in the trailer and the b-roll. Ubisoft not responding to the criticism makes it even less of a logical stance to take. If they'd just accidentally made the game look worse than it really is, it'd take literally seconds of footage to show it, or addressing the concerns with 'oh that's stuff is still in there. we didn't think to make sure we included such scenes in the trailer when we've already shown that stuff'. Either of those things and we'd not still be here.

But we are. Because downgrade.

Apparently the game does have Wind simulation as confirmed on that craptastic Twitch interview today.
But that doesn't confirm anything. I've seen the occasional can rolling across the floor in the b-roll and trailer. Are they talking about that? Are they talking about it effecting the main characters coat or particle effects from squeeling tires and car crashes? Or are they talking about the same kind of effects we saw in 2012?

What does the wind actually effect? This footage has, like I said, the occasional can rolling down the street, but the amount of atmospheric effects are greatly reduced in this footage compared to that footage. Again, in the 2012 footage, there were more atmospheric effects going on in a shot of one person walking down a back alley than in any shots in this one.

I guess all we have now is old 2012 footage of Watch Dogs to look at.

R.I.P 2012 Watch Dogs.

What an amazing game you could have been.

Why are you guys talking about Watch_Dogs as if it were a game?

Watch_Dogs was a great short film by Ubisoft released in 2012. The game coming out is based off that film*

I think this is the main problem for many in this thread.

It could also be because they might have mis-judged the specs of next-gen consoles and had to scale back on a few things.

If the downgrade from E3 is actual then it's a good thing that it didn't launch with the new consoles. It would be a dreadful intro to this gen.

So what evidence are people going on that the 2012 reveal was not Watch Dogs?

that many effects that were in nearly every shot of the 2012 footage aren't in any shots of the 2014 footage. It's a logical presumption. when confronted with questions about the downgrade, Ubisoft deflected, which only adds more credibility to the claims.

Was looking forward to a weekend off. Now I need to edit a last minute Jimquisition to replace Monday's planned one.

Fuckin' Ubisoft.

Damn this thread is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

Has literally entertained me all day long.

Pre-order canceled. Wait and see mode engaged.

:(

If they announced that the PC version will look like 2012. Then some hope will be restored.

The only hope that remains for the e3 2012 looks is nvidia, since tuey are still partnered for the PC version. Typically that usually means it will be a graphical showcase and highlight a number of nvidia only features along the way.

We'll still have to wait and see though. I don't have any faith in ubisoft and its all but certain the the division is fluff as well

Worse graphical effects does not mean it's a different game. I'd say the logical presumption would be that they simply toned down the graphics to improve performance. Saying it's a different game is not what I'd say is the logical presumption.

I wanted to do what that main character is doing, just walk around in gorgeously rendered windy city. Soak in the atmosphere before shit hit the fans. Now I will probably not have as much fun doing it. Weird how graphics matters (for me, anyway) when it comes to building an atmosphere in a video game.

Yet sucker punch with their team a 1/4 of the size of the team Ubi usually throw at a title managed to make SS look spectacular ?

working on multiple consoles, different design philosophies, different details on objects due to what the player sees - camera is much closer in Watch_Dogs so they might have used higher res textures as opposed in Infamous where the camera is further back (I'm guessing on this part)
