Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

Worse graphical effects does not mean it's a different game. I'd say the logical presumption would be that they simply toned down the graphics to improve performance. Saying it's a different game is not what I'd say is the logical presumption.

'it's a different game' can mean a lot of things. ask Reggie.

The only hope that remains for the e3 2012 looks is nvidia, since tuey are still partnered for the PC version. Typically that usually means it will be a graphical showcase and highlight a number of nvidia only features along the way.

We'll still have to wait and see though. I don't have any faith in ubisoft and its all but certain the the division is fluff as well

It's quite sad really. Watch Dogs has hyped up so well that it was literally why people were waiting to get an Xbone or PS4.

But now, from the look of it. Your average gamers might still buy it. But those of us who know better most likely won't.

I know I can't support Ubisoft for thinking doing stuff like this is right. Look like AC4 is going to be my last Ubisoft game for a while until shit get better.

I rather give my money to Bungie and Sucker Punch.

Yeah I have no hope for The Division looking that good anymore. not after this fiasco.

Also that door gif is one of the few things people will instantly look for in newer footage and if it's not there they will go mad lol

2012 Watch_Dogs and 2013 The Division will in no way represent the final versions of what those games it looks like
on consoles
. I'm still excited for both. Not super excited, but more like" hmmm interesting, remind me when these are closer to release" excited.

I wonder when or if they feel the need to address the downgrade reasonably.

Only 4 hotspot out of 5 ? that's clearly not enough.

OR... you're looking at a different weather condition, where there wasn't enough wind to blow things around. 'It no longer exists'... did you just make that up?

Okay guy. I'm making a reasonable assumption that the games technical prowess has been reduced. How did I come to this you ask? By using the material provided to me, the consumer, by Ubisoft. The launch trailer to drum up hype for the release, the footage from the most recent previews, and the initial reveal from E3.

My consumer eyes tell me there's a drop off from the reveal to what we see today. The trailer and preview footage both show quite a gap in visual fidelity. Therefore, my reasonable assumption is that were the graphics the EXACT same as that reveal, somewhere in the trailer or preview footage we would most likely catch a glimpse. But no, everyone's been taken aback by the results we've been shown.

Prove me wrong. Better yet, Ubi prove me wrong. They've certainly got the game to show it off. All it takes is a video, right?

I don't know what that means, but some people seem to be under the impression that Ubisoft built that entire gameplay segment for the 2012 showing when what was shown is clearly Watch Dogs. It's also possible that what was shown in 2012 was just running on a PC on the highest settings and everything since has been of the console versions.

Was looking forward to a weekend off. Now I need to edit a last minute Jimquisition to replace Monday's planned one.

Fuckin' Ubisoft.

Man, I really need to set a day aside to start watching your videos.

EDIT: That Torro's GIF. Bravo, man. Reminds me of Sunhi.

  • the b-roll footage is not confirmed to be from the PS4 version.
Um... yes it is:

Those are DS4 icons. Since they look identical in every game I've seen them in, it seems Sony mandates that the icons look a certain way. And anyone with a PS4 knows the L1/R1 buttons are shaped quite differently than they were on PS3.

even if the final take away from this thread is that Watch_dogs looks like shit when the sun is shining compared to when it doesn't...

well. it's still going to look like shit when the sun is shining.

So disappointed in Ubi right now. Black Flag looks better than this. Such a massive massive downgrade. It's fucked up
I don't think so. But Black Flags had this amazing lush environment and ocean.

I agree with you.

Yet, I do have a problem. This problem stems from the fact that this game is not the same game that was shown and promised to the world during E3 2012 (the show where many journalists gave the game the "game of the show" award to).

I think this is the main problem for many in this thread.

And what follows that GIF is even better. A bit of wind making the character's jacket move. The sewers emitting water vapor. It feels alive and so next-gen. But we got this instead.

That's an educated guess but I'm not IGN, it still isn't officially confirmed by either Sony or Ubisoft.

Oddly enough, there's no Kotaku preview on the game either.
And the sites that have previews (GS, GI, IGN, Joystiq, T3) don't mention the graphics at all. Something's up, folks.

We don't have a preview because we didn't go to Montreal. (Kotaku doesn't take press junkets.)

I'm just seeing this for the first time now, but do you guys really think "game doesn't look like it did at E3" is unusual?

I can't believe ubisoft tried to sell us on an open world game with that much fucking detail with that level of graphics.

It's not just the graphics themselves. I can't believe that they could put that much artist work time into such a detailed design of just a single street of an open world game.

Ubisoft has ruined my ability to trust. Years from now when I'm dating a woman with hopes of marriage, I won't be able to pop the question. Because of Ubisoft.

Certainly. They need to show a video that demonstrates that all the good stuff - bokeh, rain, things reacting to wind, and lots of reflections when wet are all still in the game. Unlike apparently most people in this thread, I am giving them the benefit of the doubt - I have no reason to believe they have been removed - indeed the story trailer shows lots of bokeh, albeit in cutscenes, and they have chosen for some reason to show no rain in the trailer, and some B-roll where the sun is high in the sky and there is barely any wind and no rain.

I have to say I don't see where this new story trailer looks particularly worse - everything looks on par or better than the cutscenes from the original trailer, and I think the characters have improved. But I can understand why people are being thrown off by the B-roll. It does look bland, but that's what can happen when the sun is high in the sky. And again, they chose to have it not raining in the night scenes, which should have shown a load more reflections as we've seen the past. A lower sun, like in the initial reveal, gives you:

- more obvious shadows
- more obvious normal maps
- a nicer colour to the lighting in general
- god rays peek into view
- pavement reflection

All those things have been shown in footage since the initial reveal trailer.

I have no desire to make excuses for Ubisoft, I'm just offering a possible alternative explanation as to why stuff looks different. Was there any broad-daylight footage in the initial trailer? No. Was there any night time footage in dry conditions? No.

What's unusual is the stark difference between what was shown at E3 2012 and the new March 2014 trailer.

That easily reaches an Aliens Colonial Marines level, in terms of misleading and deceiving.

I guess it's the degree

That new bridge footage looks more like a Cruis'n game then Watch_Dogs as we knew it

watch_dogs_e3_2012_vs_march_2014_by_endless_1-d795oxr.gif

It's because of the lighting engine. It received a pretty big hit over the delay months and I'm still wondering why.

Edit: Just look at the difference in that search light. The 2013 version has that great beam through atmospheric fog with the focus of the beam around the radius. The trailer we got has that crap flat light that looks like it's just being painted on the ground rather than cast.

Further edit: Look at the structures bookending the bridge. The 2013 version lights on the center of each structure casts across the surface with the brightest section being towards the base (light source) and it nicely falls off along the length of it. The 2014 version is just a small light with no cast effect whatsoever. It doesn't even load in until much closer.

I do think the PS4 is probably capable of these graphics.

In a really linear game.

Near the end of the gen.

By Naughty Dog.

All of our outrage is based on this one gif. We need more evidence. But frankly, GTA V looks better than this at this point and Infamous has blown Watch Dogs away.

Freaking out about a game's graphics two months before it comes out doesn't strike me as a productive use of time.

Well, I do have to study for some exams. But I guess it's good that people are complaining in the first place. Publishers shouldn't do that kind of thing. People love little details, that now seem to be lacking in the current build.

Even if it happens usually, we should complain. After all we're giving them our money basing on the "promise" shown to us at the reveal. They pretty much had it coming.
