Is it just me or does there seem to be very little hype for Smash Bros. 4?

Guys, 3DS handles pretty big rosters in SSFIV3D (launch game) and Tekken 3D Prime Edition (game botched by the included film that takes most of the space). It's -not- holding the WiiU version down by any means.

Plus, you have to come to terms that 3DS is Nintendo's main platform, so I'd say the 3DS version is their priority.

Brawl online sucked.

But I don't remember a fighting game that ran well on Wii's online. Plus I don't see how that's a complaint for this game seeing how the Wii U runs online games well.

I also had matches that ran smooth at times, guess those were lucky ones.

Don't be daft, it's obvious that people are skeptical of how well SSB4's online will work.

I have slightly higher hopes for 4's online, especially since they're working with Namco, but when Brawl came out in Japan, I had lag with my friends

In the neighboring prefecture

With Wii and Wii U Nintendo damaged their relation with hardcore Nintendo fans. Smash is a hardcore Nintendo game. Might be why.

It's not just you. I'm not even feeling it, despite absolutely loving the previous three games.

Dare I say, it seems to be more of the same, and that's not enough for me.

I don't own a Wii U and don't want one.

I also don't want to play a Smash game on a handheld. Analog sticks get abused in Smash, and that's fine if I'm using a replaceable controller, but I'm not going to tear a system up.

One other thing: it just upsets me to see all the fan service for these classic abandoned franchises. I see Fox and Captain Falcon and it makes me sad that Nintendo doesn't make Star Fox or F-Zero anymore.

Look what they did for the Smash Dojo for Brawl.

Look what they're doing for the Smash 4 Dojo

They reason things aren't crazy as their were with Brawl is simply because Brawl was hyped like nothing else ever has been. Brawl's dojo was absolute madness every midnight because we'd get various different in-depth explanations on anything. Smash 4 just gives us a daily screenshot and that's it.

All things considered, Smash 4 hype is still incredibly high for what little we actually get about it. And we hardly even know when it's really coming.

Right but given the improvements Nintendo have made since Brawl in terms of online play, the online functionality of the last game Sakurai has produced (KI:U), who Sakurai is working with now (Namco-Bandai who have a reputation of quality netcode for fighting games), etc. there are more reasons to be optimistic about SSB4's online capabilities than to be pessimistic. Sure they could botch it but "Remember what happened 6-7 years ago on a different platform with a different team?! It's CLEARLY going to be the EXACT same now!" comes off a bit of a "Really?"-type of argument.

I still don't trust Nintendo as far as I can throw a Wii U. If the netplay is good - and that's a big IF - then I'll happily admit I'm wrong.

Blame Brawl.

This plus the "definitive version" being on a console few people want/ own means there's a lot of meeh to go around.

After Brawl it's become clear that Sakurai doesn't have this magical golden touch ... so until I play the game myself I will think that the future "Project M" version will be the thing to wait for.

It's a huge concern. Not only does it have to run well, a problem other fighting game developers have, it has to run well with four onscreen characters (all four of whom could be transforming characters like Pokemon Trainer) and God knows how many Pokemon and Assist Trophies while keeping the customizability of a normal game of Smash.

Do explain how the Wii U hasn't damaged anything....

People were already on this "waaah Nintendo doesn't care about us hardcores anymore" bandwagon long before the Wii u dropped.

I didn't like Brawl as much as Melee, but I'm not going to sit here and spew hyperbolic statements suggesting that my interest in a series is damaged because of less than stellar sequel. Melee for a lot of people is an all-timer, myself included. Successors failing to match predecessors shouldn't be met with this much disdain.

The heck? Is this the same as Nintendo magic? Next thing I'm going to hear is Smash 4 doesn't feel lived in or something kooky like that.

Not a lot of people have a Wii-U, so there's going to be less buzz and excitement around the new Smash than there was for Brawl.

And honestly, coming off of melee, which some people played consistently for years might have had something to do with it.

The original statement by Coolwhip reads as:
With Wii and Wii U Nintendo damaged their relation with hardcore Nintendo fans. Smash is a hardcore Nintendo game. Might be why.

There was nothing specifically about Brawl being a disappointment, so I dunno why you mentioned it.
Not to mention, the statement "Wii U has not damaged anything" is such a farce that it doesn't need a response.

Personally?

It sounds weird, but I was crushed when Brawl was released and they didn't include any new female characters at all (only a variant of Samus). Melee had Peach and Zelda...but Brawl? Nothing.

I know that Smash Bros. 4 has Rosalina and Wii Fit Trainer so far...but that moment of realization was just...deflating. I think I remember the particular moment...when the last Star Fox character was announced to be Wolf, not Krystal. That just took all of the wind out of my sails.

I guess it's part of a larger criticism over the sheer lack of characters that Brawl added. Throughout its development I really was expecting a massive expansion of the roster, but we only got a 13 character net increase. I really wanted a whole bunch of new character experiences, but I left feeling underwhelmed, especially since the Dojo essentially revealed all of the character surprises beforehand.

Actually it does, considering I took the time to give you a response. My point about the Wii u was in the first part of the reply, actually. Coolwhip went into aspects of how both systems damaged the hardcore.

Also, his original statement somewhat lacks relevance anyways, as I fail to see why a myriad of hardware and software misfires dictates the enthusiasm about a sequel to a much beloved series.

Noooo, I'm saying that tons of Smash fans seem to think Sakurai can do no wrong. Many people felt this way ... until brawl shown us that he can take gold and shit all over it.

But hey, that may be because of Nintendo pushing many "core" titles to be accessible to the "casual" players which made them watered down in the Wii years. Either way, Brawl was by far enough to show that Sakurai can pop out a hyped up lil shit.

There just aren't many WiiU owners and its not exactly near release.
I wouldn't expect to see much internet hype over a game thats over 6 months away and on a plattform with an install base of less than 6 mil.
Since Smash is best played locally against friends I'm not surprised by the lack of hype among the 3DS crowd. That said, I wouldn't say that it won't be equally amazing on the 3DS, Smash just never was on a handheld before so we don't really know.

every female character except ZSS was better in Melee than in Brawl, Aquamarine prefers Melee confirmed /s

So this is where the cool guys gather to casually shit on Nintendo now? Awesome

The fact some of you don't feel hyped for whatever, but very respectable, reason, doesn't mean there are tons of people anticipating it. GAF is not the one and only indicator of hype, after all.

it is precisely the opposite, there is much more hype on GAF than there is elsewhere
also nice job pretending that there's a cabal out to get Nintendo

The Wii-U is in a position where the hardware and Nintendo's current attitude are repulsing people from buying the console to get to the game they'd otherwise love to buy. I imagine Mario Kart and Smash Bros will both underperform, just like NSMB U and Mario Meow and Donkey Kong.

Dead on. System sellers don't really exist in the same form anymore, but people are really forgetting SM3DW was a bust. If their flagship can't draw up interest (or anything else, really), twice, it's pretty easy to localize issues to the platform itself.

The gaming market has changed as a whole, not just the console space. MS gets it. Sony gets it. Nintendo is vying for service parity with their last efforts. It's too little too late at this point.

Personally, Brawl was my most hyped game last gen and I left feeling disappointed. How well the online works and if the game plays more like Melee will determine a lot of my enjoyment of the title. Since I haven't seen anything to instill confidence in either yet I just kinda feel like it will get here when it gets here.

A lot of other people on the internet seem pretty hyped about it though, just depends where you look.

I'm not a fan of Smash, and I'm annoyed that Sakurai has been suckered into making it again. To think he could be developing something new for the Wii U right now!

I'm pretty much certain it won't be the game I want it to be. Shit, until Captain Falcon is confirmed I'm not really even paying much attention/considering buying it.

Last time we got everything revealed to us in the Dojo, so as an avid follower of the Dojo, when I played Brawl, I was extremely underwhelmed by the lack of surprises...in retrospect, it did more harm than good.

So when Sakurai reveals things now...I don't know. I can't trust that there is going to be a ton of wonderful, unrevealed surprises once the game releases. I have this nagging feeling that Smash Bros. 4 will be relatively barebones, and that stops me from getting hyped about it.

Hype is short lived in today's era, there's just too many other games especially if you own a PC that can make you quickly forget about the Wii U.
Today I couldn't even recall when the last time was when I bothered hooking up my Wii U.
I have just too much of a backlog on my PC,

Cash is also a problem (for me at least) and I know Nintendo like to keep their games at a premium price for as long as possible.

Would be nice to own these new games, but in all honestly I wouldn't really bother rushing out to get them at release date.

My hype is at point where it is just natural. Like Goku and Gohan chillin while they are in there SSJ forms before the Cell Tournament. The anticipation will always remain just like it has for FFXV and KHIII and every new trailer will make me Oprah.gif but I'm not hype everyday like I was in high school checkin smash dojo on the daily. I don't check my 3DS for updates on MiiVerse daily.
Buying a WiiU for this game!!!

That's why I didn't even bother. It's been 6 years since Brawl.

Even back in 2008 Nintendo didn't really acknowledge the importance of online (at times they still seem like they don't lol).

Sakurai acknowledged the complaints for Brawl online, and basically said it wasn't that good. Kid Icarus: U got a positive reception for its online.

Wii U is better equipped for online games, and Namco is also part of the development team. That's all the evidence I need to assure that we will see a pretty good improvement this time around.

Yet, I'm the daft one. Lol.

That's slightly hyperbolic lol

Brawl was like a 9/10 game next to Melee's 10/10

That's the thing though. LOTS of fighting games have this issue. Brawl was just one of the worst. I don't expect it to run as smooth a shooting or racing game, but for it to at least be playable.

There's only a handful of fighters that are really smooth online. PlayStation All-Stars and Persona 4 Arena are probably the only fighters I remember playing recently that were great online. I might be missing others.

Not saying the experience will be flawless, but i think itll definitely a step up from Brawl.

Barebone? After I saw what Sakurai did with Super Smash Bros Brawl and Kid Icarus Uprising contents, so I'm pretty sure that your feeling could be wrong.

Edited: I might misunderstood your comment; can you elaborate more on your opinion on barebones such as what?

This is pretty much where I stand. I loved the Dojo, but I also don't mind surprises being held back this time around. The problem is that I'm not entirely convinced that there's going to be be many surprises this time, and I can't help but feel like I'd be setting myself up for disappointment.

just put Xfactor in the game. The higher % you have the faster you move, and with like 200% you basically auto-wavedash and also the stronger your hits become.

That'll add hype. Comebacks are always hyped. It will also help the gap between casuals and "competitive" platformer players.

I don't think it's physically possible for SSB4 to have worse online than Brawl
that would be fail of the generation material right there
