Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

On the topic of Lumiose City, I should finally start playing Y or X.

Have all of the Lumiose City problems been patched by now? Do I need to do anything special to download the patch, and/or is there anything I should still be especialy careful to avoid (like avoiding saving outside a building in Lumiose City)?

A patch came out ages ago and everything is fine now. Just download the patch from the eShop.

My thoughts are little broader, 40-50. The higher end of that range is a sweet spot for me, but I'm worried that it's too optimistic.

I dunno man, only 5 more than Brawl would be mildly disappointing and we already have the Salromano leak that could at least give us 6 definites on top of Brawl's returning cast for 41.

I should say my numbers are excluding alternate forms like Sheik, Zero Suit Samus, and Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon. I'm also sure that there will be a cut or two.

I'm just not expecting that many more newcomers besides Mii, Pac-Man, and Palutena.

19, 65, 9, 17

1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 2, 4, 0, 2, 6

Lets see who gets this...

Oh wow. I haven't clicked that combo in years.

As far as roster count goes, I created a parabola of best fit, considering the character counts of previous games:

It clearly shows we will have 42 characters in Smash 4.

He never mentioned Rosalina, which is pretty weird, but I doubt we'll get much more than that.

There will be 49 characters and everyone will swear there is a secret 50th character. But there isn't.
There isn't because Sakurai.

I'll go with 49. Plus, with the 3DS's super huge top screen, and a bottom screen for the "selected character" interface to go, there's PLENTY of room for 50 characters. Someone make a mockup.

If anyone here expects 10+ newcomers then they're setting themselves up for disappointment. I have nothing to backup my claim; it's merely a feeling.

Yeah I don't think anybody realistically can. We've had some really crazy additions (Villager, WFT, Megaman), so I think really now we'll get a few "new series character" standard additions and that'll be it.

"Aim low. Aim so low, nobody will know you even tried"

We already know about five newcomers, and Pac-Man, Mii, and Palutena make eight (assuming they're all in). There's got to be at least two more after those. The first SSB had 12 characters, Melee added 14, and Brawl had 16 (technically 18) newcomers -- considering the roster is the most important aspect of a fighting game, fewer than 10 new characters would be pretty disappointing.

Brawl had 16 newcomers? Uh... of this I was not aware.

To revise my previous claim. If anyone expects more than 15 newcomers, they'll be setting themselves up for disappointment. Again, just a feeling.

A lot of people think of Samus, Zero Suit Samus, Squirtle, Charizard, Ivysaur, Zelda and Sheik count as 7 characters. I personally count the squares on the character select screen.

If every Brawl character returns we'd currently have 42 characters. It's silly to think every newcomer is revealed and/or we'll have a ton of cuts, so I think anything less than ~45 characters is exceptionally skeptical.

I'm expecting about ~5 more newcomers; anything beyond that would probably be paired with a cut, just thinking about devtime and so forth. Final roster would probably be in the 46-48 range. But since they're cutting SSE and have the whole Namco backup going on a part of me is hoping it'll be beyond our wildest dreams and we'll have 50+ characters and they'll all be super cool and fulfill my wildest dreams and it'll be the best game ever.

But I'm expecting about ~5 more newcomers.

If you count the squares, it's 15. If there are no cuts between Brawl and 4 and 4 has at least 45 characters, at least least 9 of them will be newcomers.
I'd say 10, but Mewtwo may very well be playable again.

...who are you and what have you done with Heath?

What's got you so confident?

*Beep* I'm programmed to spread the false hopes *Beep*

I had a dream that we got 49 characters slots and 1 random slot. Also I counted transformation and pokemon characters as well. I'm not 100% confident enough but I would love to have that. 45-48 is more safe and less heart wrenching for me.

In addition to the 35 squares on the board, we've got Sheik, ZSS, PT's other two Pokemon, and... ? Counting Ice Climbers as one, and Olimar+pkmn as one. Who are 40, 41 and 42?

I didn't count the Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon (since he's usually treated as a "lump sum" - on the Dojo he was one page while Sheik and ZSS got their own), but I did count the five newcomers.

Ah. Yeah I'm confident there are still unrevealed characters, but I also think it would be premature to assume there will be no cuts. We had a handful of them in Brawl.

Still, though, considering only five newcomers have been revealed, imagining 10 more—double what we've learned—gets me excited.

We need to hijack the Banderas gif and make a Nintendo version for thoughts such as these. TEN MORE. Imagine who they could be. What dormant series. What familiar faces. What reasoning behind the choices? In ways I hope SSB4 never comes out, because the lead-up is inevitably more exciting than actually playing it regularly!

That said... my first time playing Brawl, my Wii had trouble reading the double-layer disc and I had huge trouble getting it to work. After two years of waiting, was quite irritating :)

let's not

So here's what the 3DS screen wouldd look like with 50 characters. A little crowded, but definitely navigable. More would be pushing it.

No offence but I don't know why you think this'd be a factor, at all. I mean they can always take the text off the character faces should they add more than 50.

You mean like the cranky one.

I don't know. It's reasonable to think that no matter what they remove from the design, the boxes would eventually get too small for a portable screen

Yes, that will do nicely. I will save that for Hades' announcement.

Ah there'd be ways round it :P Sakurai chooses some things for ridiculous reasons (See removing cutscenes since they'd leak onto the internet), but that's pushing it a little.

There's nothing that mandates they use a grid-based character select screen on a system where everyone can navigate menus independent of one another.

edit: so beat

I'd say the character grid is on the top screen and the touch screen is used for everything else. Rules, alt colors, CPU players, teams, nicknames, handicaps, etc.
