Games you remember, names you don't

Really old 2D sidescroller, you're like a dude...in a jungle...looking for a girl. there's a witch doctor or some shit...and a little village....I think there was a plane or something.

"Fantasy Zone? Definitely not a bad game though"

No, it definitely wasn't Fantasy Zone. I think the shops were set up similarly where it was a door floating in the sky and you flew into it to buy stuff. The planes were cartoony normal planes, not awesome winged UFO people like Opa Opa.

Available on the Wii VC, if you want to play/buy it again.

FYI - Cybernator was a sequel to a Mega Drive game (Assault Suit Leynos). This is being remade for the PS4.

I honestly didn't know this about the Wii. Is this VC on Wii or Wii U?

Gadget Twins.

Bermuda Syndrome, I suspect.

Really ? That's awesome news, need to go look for more info.

Also, wasn't there another SNES Mech game that shared a lot of things with Cybernator, but with a slightly more arpg structure ? By square soft maybe, not sure, but it really looked like a sequel.

Edit: duh, its metal warriors. it was indeed an unofficial, US developed sequel, by Lucasfilm/arts.

Had this game on the PSX, basically a Resident Evil clone for the gameplay with added punching and kicking mechanics. Was a fuuturistic game set in a skyscraper, i found out what it was a while back and managed to get a copy to run on my PSP, forget the name now thouhg.

OverBlood?

Okay here's another terribly described game. It was an old black and white Apple/Macintosh education game. Not sure if it was a math or word game. Basically it had robot looking stick figures that went up and down elevators or lifts. In fact I'm not even sure if it was an educational game but being in kindergarten I'm sure it was.

I remember playing a Gladiator type game in the Arcades back in the day. You were just a Gladiator dude going 1 on 1 with tougher and tougher opponents. It wasn't as deep as a fighting game as I believe it was before SF2 but I can't remember the name of it.

I was thinking about a series of games (unrelated in any way, I just seemed to buy a bunch for PS2 at the same time all with similar mechanics) that had a third person view and a combat system that was very fluid, based on having both a sword and a gun. As far as I recall the camera wasn't fixed (ala Devil May Cry) but mapped to the right stick.

The standout title of this ilk I managed to track down myself with a heavy Google session, it turned out to be Crimson Sea 2.

What has been eluding me though is a game I picked up soon after, with very kindred mechanics (combat wise). I remember that the game opened in a ruined city and the environments were very bleak and dystopian, the city had very bland textures all in beige or light grey. You were almost immediately thrown into battle with enemies (I can't seem to remember if they were monsters/demons or mechs? I think possibly the former) and if I recall correctly the combat was rather brutal and I died on numerous occasions during the opening level. It's been haunting me for a while now and I thought I'd throw it to the floor...

I also have the feeling that there were a few more games of this type, but I may be mistaken (I just seem to remember thinking "Oh, this is another clone of that one I picked up a few weeks ago), so if anyone can think of any other PS2 titles that have similar mechanics I could look those up too. I was also living in Thailand, so games would sometimes appear at random times, and not necessarily the same point in time as an official release...

EDIT: Oh, the game had a very "Japanese Dev" aesthetic to it, although I assume it must have had english menus and such..

Here's one that's been driving me nuts for years:

  • Ps1 game.
  • First person puzzle game.
  • you play an engineer in a space-ship that is falling towards the Sun/a star.
  • There is a LOT of dialogue.
  • If you didn't complete it in time, the ship burnt up in the sun.
  • You could change the look on your face when delivering dialogue to show if you were being friendly/aggressive.
  • I think the box-art was a blue puddle or something?

I think the name began with P in the UK but I'm not sure.

Any ideas?

Hippodrome (US) aka Fighting Fantasy (JP).

Sounds like Sentient.

There was a PC 2d side scroller I used to play as a child, where your character had a boomerang (I think), and could shoot lightning and "plasma". You had to collect beating hearts for health or something, keys to unlock doors, and it was sort of like a very haggard Castlevania. You could also talk to wizards, and the main character had blond hair.

I think it came bundled with Commander Keen.

Some aspects of that fit Monster Bash.

Edit: Ah, it's an even better fit for Dark Ages

I played it when I was like 5, all the time, it was a pc windows 95? jurassic park game where you had top down controls and you needed to find eggs, incubate them and raise them and build a camp. Fight mercenaries and recover dinosaurs and sometimes fight dinosaurs.

I suppose it's a sixth gen game, some kind of 3D platfomer maybe? The piggyback mechanic kinda sounds familiar but I don't specifically remember something like the described game. I'm wondering if it isn't Maximo or its sequel, although I don't remember if it had two player support.

Yeah, I thought that mechanic was familiar as well, but just couldn't think of anything specific. Never played Maximo, so I'm not sure. Did it have the piggyback mechanic?

Well that was fast.

Now all I need to do is remember or figure out what that arcade game is that I mentioned a few post back and my gaming memory will be cured.

Did you check out Star Soldier and Ray Crisis?

Only played the first Maximo and it didn't have any piggyback as far as I know. I mentioned it because of the "horror" theme which kind of sounded like the description. Hope someone with more knowledge of GC/XBOXPS2 gen will figure it out.

I think it's more likely to be a PC game from the same gen. I suggested Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi to the person who asked me about this, but they said it was something different.

Ok this has been haunting me for years now (not really). It was I think a SNES game that you controlled what I think was female transforming robots, it was a top down shooter that i think sometimes went to sidescroller. I really want to play it again but I search for shooters i can't find it. I remember you could play cooperatively.

Hold on a second, just realized it might be Disgaea. Haven't really played the series but I think you can stack party members on top of each other while combining attacks and such and the whole story revolves around demons and vampires.

Did it have to have a sword and a gun? I thought of some games that partially match your description. Nanobreaker, Chaos Legion, Bujingai, maybe Gungrave Overdose. I know Crimson Sea 2 but not much else specifically like it.

Not likely it but any chance you're thinking of The Guardian Legend on NES or Sigma Star Saga on GBA?

A brawler on the NES. Actually there were 2 in the series, and they were side-scrolling like Ninja Turtles. I think the protagonist looked like David Bradley from American Ninja III, at least on the box or something.

If we're discarding some classic stuff like the Double Dragon series and River City Ransom, check out Bad Dudes or maybe Target: Renegade.

Thanks for the reply. I am fairly sure (with the emphasis on fairly) that it had gun/sword combo. The closest you supplied was Nanobreaker (it had the same feel to it) but the environments were a lot more open and less claustrophobic, they were mainly open streets. It did have that post-apocalyptic feel to it though and the colour palette is similar.

These appear close, but I don't think any are an absolute hit.

I've got two - back when I was playing my Sega Megadrive (
superior UK name FTW
) I seemed to remember a Fire Emblem-esque strategy RPG game fighting monsters like gargoyles and birdmen, and an anime-style game where the story was about your girlfriend being kidnapped and you had to rescue her by racing/chasing the kidnappers(?) - the gameplay consisted of QTEs with directions and buttons to press and if you failed you'd get a short cutscene of you crashing your red sports car.

Shining Force?
Edit: Also maybe Warsong/Langrisser.

Road Avenger?

Shining Force?

Road Avenger?

That's both of them! Man, Shining Force was a good game. Has there ever been a sequel released?

I don't remember having the MegaCD add-on for the Megadrive but I definitely remember Road Avenger/Road Blaster - Sega really messed up having all of the different types of consoles in such a short space of time.

Edit: Actually, looking at Warsong, maybe I played that too - the layout and the battle screen seem familiar, but I recognise the foreground/background battle screen of Shining Force better.

YES, there is a game that has been hunting my dreams fro years.

It was a NES game borrowed from a friend, side scroller, fantasy setting, ridiculously glitchy. I remember playing it as a kid and being amazed by some magical feats of the game that I later understood as being glitches.

It was "greeny", with plenty of outdoor environments.

A year or so ago I checked the game "Trojan", I don't know why, probably because the name was similar, but having watched a longplay on youtube I can confirm it wasn't Trojan.

Battle of Olympus?

That's both of them! Man, Shining Force was a good game. Has there ever been a sequel released?

There was a Shining Force II, also on the Mega Drive, and two Gaiden titles on the Game Gear. Those titles were rereleased on the Mega CD as Shining Force CD with a further two storylines. There was also Shining Force 3 on the Saturn, split into three distinct releases; Scenario 1-3.

In English we got Shining Force I and II, Gaiden II (with the subtitle "The Sword of Hajya"), and the first scenario only of Shining Force III. Wikipedia claims we saw Shining Force CD, too, but I don't recall ever noticing it.

The first game's been rereleased a few times, too. It and the sequel are two of the Genesis titles on Steam, for one thing.

The series is pretty dead after that, though. The Shining name has lived on in some other non-tactical RPGs (Shining in the Darkness, first-person dungeon crawl - also on Steam - Shining Wisdom, ARPG are the two I've played) but it's mostly memories these days.

So a green, fantasy, sidescroller? That's not a great deal of info to go on. As a wild'n'crazy guess, given the first level is greenish, it has good gameplay, and the title's a bit unconventional: Little Nemo: The Dream Master?

It appears I may have done you an injustice sir!

Upon further investigation I believe it was in fact Bujingai: The Forsaken City!

I reckon I missed that title amongst the others in my first search, but upon closer inspection I think that's it. I also think I was mis-recalling the gun for the character's magic attack (thus making the gameplay feel similar to Crimson Sea 2 when you swap out gun attack for fireball etc).

Thank You! Gold stars all round.

This was an arcade game, that i feel like had TIME in the name of it

it was like a vertical scroller

ikari warriors
style
but you would start in a random point in history
and go up

you could either continue up and eventually face the boss of that point in history
or take a portal to another random point
you could fight dinosaurs
roman gladiators

Sounds similar to Time Soldiers on the Master System. No idea if it had an arcade version though.
