Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Good news, Palmer clarified the story, saying that's about time Oculus VR has existed as a company, "Nate actually corrected me at the time, saying it's actually less, between 18-20 months."

Hopefully they announce the what they will aim for the DK2 at GDC considering they are wrapping it up, not necessarily a release date.
*edit* I'm an idiot, I completely misunderstood the pronoun matching. I see now Palmer was just saying that's the company in general, and is probably the number the reporter mentioned, but the number doesn't mean what the reporter thought, and no timeframe for DK2 or a consumer kit is currently announced/estimated.

Palmer did say this: "Right now, we're focused on wrapping up DK2 and getting that out to developers ASAP. Good news soon!"

I really hope this means that I can buy one and not just select developers get access. :P

I got an Oculus update email.

We’re thrilled to introduce Atman Binstock, Oculus’ new Chief Architect!

Atman was one of the lead engineers and driving forces behind Valve’s VR project, creating the ‘VR Room’ demo that garnered so much excitement at Steam Dev Days. Prior to Valve, Atman led several projects at top companies in the industry, including RAD, DICE, and Intel.

Atman and the Valve VR team helped prove simulator sickness could be overcome and a true sense of "presence" could be delivered. He helped set the bar for consumer virtual reality and is dedicated to making sure Oculus delivers the highest quality VR experience.

Atman will be spearheading the new Oculus R&D team based in the Seattle area.

Perhaps this is new-thread-worthy?

Also as mentioned before:
We never expected to sell so many Rift development kits and the fact that we’re close to being sold out after 60,000 kits is nothing short of incredible -- Thank you for your support!

We’ll have more news on this soon, so stay tuned!

Do they make money off the Dev kits? Or are they selling them at cost or at a loss?

I think they made a tiny bit of profit on them, but not much at all.

The (near) end of all DK1 sales this week and GDC being next week just fit together too perfectly for there not to be some kind of DK2 announcement made. Can't wait to see what they say.

I believe they've implied in the past that the dev kits were being sold for a profit but I can't find the source for that right now.

I think we can prepare ourself to wait till summer 2016 for a final consumer kit.

Palmer has said if they don't launch the consumer model by 2015 something has gone really wrong. It's highly unlikely we'll be waiting until 2016.

18 to 20 months and that's their "hope" date? Damn that's a disappointing wait... :/
This has been debunked.

Palmer Luckey said:
Don't know where this came from.

Our best guess: Nate and I were talking with Laura about how some people think that Oculus has been showing prototypes for years, when in reality, the company has only existed for about 2 years. Nate actually corrected me at the time, saying it's actually less, between 18-20 months. That would line up pretty well with Laura's piece.

Bottom line: 18-20 months from now would be Sept. to Nov. 2015. We don't have anything planned with hard dates that far in advance, especially not in such a tight window.

Right now, we're focused on wrapping up DK2 and getting that out to developers ASAP. Good news soon!

Edit: Duh. It was already posted.

Is this the right place to ask? Whatever.

So, living under a rock, I didn't realized they stopped selling Oculus Rifts (dev kits or otherwise). I was hoping to buy one in the summer. Am I boned?

Wait till tomorrow. Oculus might be announcing the DK2. I'm gonna jump in on that if it's announced.

there will still be plenty of them on ebay etc. but like someone else said, they're quite likely to announce a new dev kit soon, possibly tomorrow.

Probably best to wait for their consumer version at this point, since the dev kits are pretty obsolete and if they do release a DK2 it's going to be pretty close to the consumer release date afaik.

Not that we didn't see it coming with Crystal Cove but seems like DK2 needs external camera as well:

Calibrate PS4 VR expectations: a game that ran 60 fps on PS3 could be done in VR (stereo 1080 MSAA low latency 60 fps) on PS4.

@ID_AA_Carmack won't you also need the PS4 Eye accessory in addition to the PS4 VR headset? That's a lot of.. stuff.

@codinghorror oculus' Crystal Cove / DK2 also needs an external camera for position tracking (vs just attitude tracking). Not ideal...

http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/19/5524972/oculus-reveals-virtual-reality-development-kit-2-announced

One year ago today, Oculus introduced the first version of its prototype virtual reality headset that wasn't literally held together with duct tape and glue. The $300 Oculus Rift Development Kit showed the world that inexpensive VR headgear was capable of being mass produced. Now, at the 2014 Game Developers Conference, the company is introducing development kit number two.

Key facts:

1080p screen, low persistence
440g (lighter than DK1)
comes with camera for positional tracking

It's Crystal Cove, basically.

$350 - Ships in July.

The 1080p OLED panel still isn't high enough a resolution to avoid jagged edges — Oculus says the consumer version will have even higher resolution ...

Nice!

It sure will be 1440p so I will wait for that.

Asking here again. Want to preorder DK2. Do they take the money now or when it's shipped?

Now.

Edit. Well, maybe not ...

Tried to preorder with PayPay and kept getting a timed-out error when initializing paypal payment screen. After 3 tries I used my credit card instead and it kept giving me an error saying missing information but I put everything in correctly.

Now patiently waiting for them to fix the site.

Success! Used credit card as payment.

Bit of a hairy moment as I tried my luck one more time with the broken 'verify order' button (or line, in my case) - a short pause, then a blank page with 'thankyou' in the page link. Thankfully I got my email notification a minute or so after. Roll on, July!

So I can put down 50 bucks and pay the rest when it ships?
Looks that way. I had to pay $22 shipping to the east coast, so it's like $50 down and $322 later. *edit* WARNING: Looks like it may place a hold for the full price, so don't try unless you can afford the whole thing, just in case.

Has anyone confirmed the FOV (field of view)? I saw someone mention 100 degrees, lower than devkit 1, but I haven't found confirmation yet.
