Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

The order confirmation for me says it will charge $50 then place a hold on your credit card the remaining $347

I would be careful if you don't actually have the money available.

I'm in! :D

When is the consumer version due? Will it be more expensive that dk2?

Based on what Nate was talking about in the Tested vid, DK2 is a major stride towards a CV1, and that they're working on refining things a whole lot rather than needing to continue to explore entirely new tech. I wouldn't be surprised if you could order CV1 by the end of the year

Assuming they have easy access to all the supplies they want and prepare for orders much more than the DKs, production/component costs will probably get it back down to $300 or less.

I keep getting a "contact customer service" error, but then re-entering I get a duplicate transaction error.

In the last hour ive either ordered 0 of these or 8 of them...

Pre-ordered without even looking into it. I know what's been coming, I'm happy to be a part of it.

Now, should I sell my DK1, or keep it for multiplayer Minecraft/TF2?

So tempted. Must resist.

Resistance is futile.

Seriously though, I say resist that temptation and wait for higher resolution, lighter headset and more content working out of the box.

Though I easily succumbed to temptation, but I fully plan on making something for it, I swear!

oculus blog page also says "We’re deep into development on the consumer Rift. We have a lot more planned, including improvements to comfort, resolution, tracking, software, ergonomics, optics, industrial design, and the overall experience."

so yeah seems like >1080p confirmed for consumer rift.

should've sold it a week ago :P you probably won't get much for it now that the dk2 has been announced, i'd hold on to it as a collector item at this point.

Well I got a call from my bank saying there were three different charges from Oculus on my card. Never got through the site without an error or any confirmation email. Ugh hopefully this is easy enough to clear up.

Even a non pentile display would be an improvement to the resolution. I mean they would both be 1080p but pentile has fewer subpixels.

I bet they announce the release date right after the orders ship DK2. That way people won't be able to cancel their DK2 orders. Yeah thats how much I think of business people.

Honestly, I don't think that will happen. The whole point of going the devkit route is for devs to get accustomed to the latest iteration of the Rift and make software that will be available around launch and support all features the Rift has to offer. If the release date is one year after the devkit2 has shipped, than yes, they might announce it right after. But in that scenario, you still get a year of great demos on your devkit2.

I'm really tempted to get one. Now that UE4 is out and I got shit to put together. I'll probably borrow the first edition kit from a few friends instead though. I really dont wanna throw my cash away until the consumer version is out.

It also shows how little you've paid attention to Oculus.

They cant set a release date because the parts they want to use aren't even available yet. They could probably give us a tentative target window, but that can often just lead to disappointment and whining if things don't go according to plan(which they often don't) so I don't blame them for just holding off til they can say something for certain.

Where does everyone keep getting that cv1 is now a long way out? Has anyone at oculus actually said that? I've seen the quotes about parts not available right now, from a few months ago (that was a few months ago, but I'm sure any part they've been eyeing was very close to production anyway) , but the only timeframe reference I've seen is not too long after DK2. Unless someone has official statements otherwise, I'm still guessing release this holiday or Q1 next year. I believe DK2 got pushed up a little bit because they were no longer able to support selling more DK1's because of the older parts shortage.

Tried to pre-ordered yesterday but got an error, tried again and it say that my order was duplicated, hours later I got this email:

Thanks for your pre-order!
This email confirms that we've received your Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 preorder. Rest assured that your place in line has been reserved despite any issues you might have experienced during the order process. We will send you another confirmation email shortly with additional information about your order.
We'll notify as you as soon as we have your item(s) in stock and your order is ready to be shipped. Please save this e-mail for reference. If there is a problem with your order, our support team will contact you.
We're thrilled at the response to our new development kit, and we thank you for being one of the first customers to order it.

Thanks again,

It's a bit different from the ones being posted here, I don't have evern a order number :(

They want 90hz and more than 1080p. Show me a 5" display with these specs, they don't exist right now.

You get the DK2 Sean?
Argh, no. Not yet at least.

I just splurged on getting myself a Logitech G27 recently, so its a bit hard to justify another £200+ toy, even though I really fucking want one. I was thinking maybe of seeing if there's any interest in doing a shared buy-in with somebody else in London, though....I'm not sure.

But they may be pipelined and available shortly, or like luckey has always stated, it's not always what they want but what is being mass produced to keep cost down.

I still would like to see a link to a quote from somebody actually with oculus stating "not 2014" or as some have stated here mid-late 2015...

Well, about the Hz, it's not like a 1080p low-persistence 75 Hz display "existed" before it was used in DK2. We don't really know what existing or upcoming displays are capable of beyond resolution.

I wish phone/tablet screens display would use high framerate / low persistence too ...

anyone know about the compatibility between dev kits?

When the DK2 comes out and all the software gets written for the new head tracking, will that make the DK1 useless for running newer demos and games?

The same again when the consumer version appears (assuming Oculus do some changes to the DK2) , will devs stop coding for the headtracking of the previous two units making them useless, or will there be some compatibility between all 3 versions?
