Waiting for that one Sakurai pic depicting Bowser using his downgrab on a lady.
I can practically guarantee that Tom Nook won't be playable. There's just no reason for him to be included. The fact that a lot of people once thought Nook was the most likely Animal Crossing representative has always struck me as absurd. In Smash Bros., the first character to represent any given franchise is always the playable protagonist (if it has one) -- Animal Crossing's equivalent of Mario, Link, Samus, and Olimar is the avatar Villager. On the other hand, Tom Nook is a shopkeeper NPC. I suspect a big reason that people want/expect Nook is because he's a "real" character with an actual name.
I guess if you consider Pikachu and Jigglypuff the protagonists of Pokemon...
Obviously the Pokémon Trainer wasn't possible on the N64. There are no technical limitations preventing the Villager from being the Animal Crossing rep.I guess if you consider Pikachu and Jigglypuff the protagonists of Pokemon...
That would be interesting, it could be like Frank West in UMvC3, where he levels up and gets stronger/different attacks. And if he uses furniture in his moveset they could gradually make it more expensive looking as he gets more bells.
Regarding the stage differences between the 3DS and Wii U versions...
Why is everyone so sure that we're going to be getting all different stages between both versions? Sakurai never said that all stages will be unique between the two versions, and clearly the boxing ring stage confirms this. Similarly, Sakurai never said that the Wii U version would only have stages from console games, while the 3DS version would only have stages from handheld games. He only said that there would be more stages based on console games on Wii U, and more stages based on handheld games on 3DS. The Palutena's Temple stage and boxing ring stage confirm this.
I imagine quite a few franchises with more limited locations for stages or less games to pull stages from will end up sharing the same stage on both versions. I could easily see franchises like Wii Fit, Ice Climber, Game & Watch, etc. only having a single stage. Maybe even franchises like Mega Man, Star Fox, F-Zero, and WarioWare, too. I could even see the Pyrosphere stage being shared across both versions, since it's appeared on 3DS in Dead or Alive Dimensions, lol.
Well, in a way, they kind of are. Sure, you, the player, take the role of the Trainer, but you also command your Pokémon; they do the fighting for you, and you directly control them. It's the Pokémon that are the real stars of the game. Of course, the Pokémon/Trainer relationship is very important, and it has been represented now in Smash Bros. with Pokémon Trainer. But still, it's not quite the same situation as Animal Crossing. Pikachu has at least been a playable protagonist in Pokémon games since before Smash Bros. was existed (Hey You, Pikachu!). Tom Nook has never been playable, and likely never will be. It's the human Villager who has always been the protagonist.I guess if you consider Pikachu and Jigglypuff the protagonists of Pokemon...
I didn't mention Pikmin, and I do think we'll probably get some kind of different Pikmin stage on the 3DS, but you never know.Your comment is pretty much right on Sakurai's comments on stages however I can't really see Pikmin's Garden of Hope in 3DS version. I'm pretty sure that they are going to pick other Pikmin location for 3DS version.
I bolded specific statement. I don't see why you would use Palutena's Temple as your example since it already exists in Kid Icarus (NES). Yeah, I know your excuse is more likely to due with Palutena's Temple's visual and map are coming straight from Uprising but still. The Kid Icarus universe's visuals and worlds evolved over the generations. Of course, Sakurai would go with the latest version in the series for visual aspects.
I have a feeling that Sakurai picked Palutena's Temple because it existed in Kid Icarus, but followed Uprising's upgraded visuals.
He's certainly one of the most prominent. So Tom Nook is now the face of Animal Crossing?
He's one of the few characters you're guaranteed to meet the same way in every play through, unlike KK, who's admitedly a possibility as well.So Tom Nook is now the face of Animal Crossing?
What do they have to do with Tom Nook? Lucas and Roy are the main characters from their respective games, and Wolf is Fox's recurring rival (who's also playable in multiplayer mode). Tom Nook is just a townsperson NPC. The genre/structure of Animal Crossing just doesn't lend itself to a playable Smash Bros. character outside of the Villager. The games don't have a "plot," and none of the other characters matter much.He was definitely hinted at, it's a popular series, we haven't seen him yet otherwise, and we've gotten characters like Lucas, Roy, and Wolf in the past.

Tom Nook is definitely the most recognizable non-human character of AC. And half the game is about the animals of course. To say he's not as respectively important as Wolf is sorta laughable to be honest. I'm not saying he'll be in, but c'mon. When I think Animal Crossing, I think the greedy bastard raccoon.
If they made it so that the gamepad touch screen could control/fling the birds, then I'd probably main himAngry Bird probably has a pretty good chance of being playable. It is the best-selling third party game on 3DS (in the west), after all.
Yeah, that and we haven't seen him yet otherwise.I think this is probably the best evidence in favor of Tom Nook, from the very first trailer:

Could also just be hinting toward him being an assist trophy.
Or to hint at Tom Nook being a playable character. You guys realize that Tom Nook is staring at an empty envelope and not the actual invitation, right? The only reason that scene exists is so the camera can close in on the Smash Bros. logo seal.
I personally think Tom Nook won't happen. Would've been funny before Villager's reveal, but now that he's in, I think a playable Tom Nook would be weird/redundant.
Would love a new trailer about now.
The 3DS stages seem so intriguing. I need to see some more in action.
I'm half-expecting a vet. tomorrow.
I would just love some more 3DS footage to be honest. How amazing it looks has led cynical ol' me to be a little skeptical of how well it'll run.
Yeah, it looks really good graphically.
Such as the SM3DL stage, the full moving stage, animated background, four players, it all makes me wonder how it'll actually run.
I'm really intrigued..

Stuff like this looks SO good, I just wonder how it'll actually perform.
Bowser pls, why are you falling so slowly
Bowser pls, why are you falling so slowly
Because he's not fast-falling? Bowser has always been relatively floaty, otherwise his recovery would be even worse than it already is.
Nah, it's not quite that high. I think Mario, Pokémon, Wii Sports, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Wii Fit, Brain Age, Kirby, and Nintendogs have all sold more than Animal Crossing.Animal Crossing is what, Nintendo's third best selling franchise behind Mario and Pokemon? Definitely deserves three characters.

Here. A lot of them are sourced at the bottom. Animal Crossing's sales figures are out of date, but even after adding City Folk and New Leaf, the series is still way below the others.Where are we getting this info

The figures aren't perfectly accurate, but that's really all we have to go by.

Momentum doesn't cancel out when air-dodging? game is crap confirmed, hitstun was removed, nothing but ganondorf starts, all characters awful, all six preorders canceled
That doesn't mean it's "Nintendo's third best selling franchise behind Mario and Pokémon," though. That kind of language implies lifetime sales. New Leaf sold/is selling well, but that doesn't automatically bump the series to third place. Even on an arbitrary per-game basis, Animal Crossing is still behind series like Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Brain Age, and Nintendogs. Those series have each sold more than Animal Crossing between even fewer entries.I'm talking about a per game basis, New Leaf released in Japan and decimated the sales of everything that came before it. I remember the 'race to 2m' graphs from the sales threads, everything was slowly going up then New Leaf was basically a straight line up from 0 to 2 million.
Wait, how on Earth has Metroid sold 17 million copies by 2008?Here. A lot of them are sourced at the bottom. Animal Crossing's sales figures are out of date, but even after adding City Folk and New Leaf, the series is still way below the others.

3DS = Brawl
Wii U = New
Seems like it might end up like that.
Maybe every time Nook lands a hit, he collects money, making him stronger, but when he gets hit, he loses them and gets weaker.
I would say that would be his grab move, but damn does that sound painful. Even Links hookshot would seem tame compared to it.
Exaggerating of course, but as someone who fishes a lot... having that happen to me would be my nightmare.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen NOA do an open response.
It is. I think the only Villager moves we don't know about yet are his neutral air, forward air (likely just a forward slingshot), and Final Smash.I thought his grab move was the net?
