Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

I hope sorceries pick up, because I feel pretty underwhelmed compared to other characters I've co-oped with. I just helped a guy out with
Ruin Sentinels
and his lightning spear was doing triple the damage of my bolts (INT 25, base staff+4).

That might just be because
the Ruin Sentinels are weak to lightning
.

But the summoning is kind of a difference maker. You can go entire boss without the boss even swinging at you with summons. I avoided them entirely on my first play through.

I suppose. But the fact that I'm playin a dual wielding character means I'm usually right up in the thick of things against the bosses. It's one thing to be a sorcerer and summon meat shields while you hang back and spell them. It's another thing when you're the meat shield. And as somebody else said, if somebody you summon fucks up, you've got a harder boss to deal with.

Co-oping bosses is one of the highlights o the Souls games to me. I can see why some people would choose to solo the first time through but the Souls community is amazing and the camaraderie and fun of co-op is one of the best parts of the experience for me.

I decided to take a break from my main save and make a caster character.

Is the whole strong attack, light attack magic thing no longer in the game? I think it was in the network test?

Yeah,I've heard a lot of funny coop stories so I have no doubt it can be pretty awesome. But the boss AI is pretty terrible overall with multiple targets. The few times I've summoned NPCs with my second character out of curiosity its ruined fights altogether. I beat the no mans wharf boss without him ever even taking a swing at me. I just stood beside him mashing attack.

Using a percentage (Like, 35% more content, for example) how much more content is in DS2, than DS1? I'm hoping it's longer / has more areas than the last. Just because I love exploring. :D

Just got to the (mid/late game location?)
foggy forest with the invisible ghosts.
Ended up standing still at the start for a few minutes, and turned around with a "Nope!" shortly after, before steeling my nerve and heading in. Silent Hill and DaS' Tomb of Giants are the only other games that have elicited that reaction out of me. Such a well done little area, especially after the incredibly lame and linear rest of the
Shaded Woods
.

Been playing as a pure, shieldless mage, with only the unupgraded dagger I started with as a melee weapon aside from my staff. This area has been especially brutal, since the
lack of visibility and spell lock onto the ghosts
has completely neutered my character.

I decided to take a break from my main save and make a caster character.

It got taken out, along with the archery style first person aiming. From hasn't said why as far as I know. It's a shame, the magic system could really use some added complexity.

Man my guy must look like the goofiest soul to wander through Drangleic. Jester's cap and gloves, priest robes, and knight leggings. Obviously the hero of the realm here.

Ok good, I assumed as much, but wasn't sure. I'm trying to roll a strong sorcerer with the MLG (once I get it), but may change to a STR/FAI build (or just build a new character as I think I'll be playing this game for quite a while). Playing this game makes me happy I'm a teacher...I have a whole summer to sink my teeth into it.

So I've started using my ascetics on
Dragon Aerie
because it only has like 6 mobs in total, 3 of which don't respawn and the rest don't even do damage. And then I get aaaallll the crystal lizards.

Sure beats cranking up the difficulty of a certain horrible area which isn't even guaranteed to give me drops.

Question though - is there a limit to how 'intense' bonfires can get? Can I just drop like 30 ascetics on this place and never have to worry about farming crafting materials ever again?
I'm pretty good at fighting dragons.

Even if I accidentally used 4 seeds on the wrong glove because I'm a nonce?

Thanks, dude.

I just took a gander at my first character and I'm sitting on 4 seeds on top of having a maxed-out glove, so you should be fine. I'm sure I didn't find all of them, so you've probably got some wiggle room to boot.

Man I feel so stupid. I read the description for the
Giants Soul
and just popped it, only learning later that they
decrease Vendricks defense.

Now there's only 3 left that are easy. Is that viable?

He starts with a 32 times defensive buff, and lowers from 32x, to 16x, to 8x, 4x, 2x with each
Giants soul
to standard. It's doable but it's gonna be a rough fight.

Also I've spent three days trying and failing to get the last
Giants soul
from the
Ancient Dragon
and I cant...I cant...

Ancient Dragon
is total horseshit. Such a cool looking boss too. Too bad.

I don't understand this one. I was summoned as a phantom and when he went in, the thing attacked (and killed me in one hit when I entered), yet when I got there he was just chillin and chatted with me. Is it because the summoner went aggro on him? If so, what do you get for killing him? (optional?)

Feel like I just got to the hardest boss in the soul series. I feel like I won't be able to kill it at all without a summon (but I believe you can't summon anyone for it anyway).

It's one of the optional bosses (can't really preface it much other than that otherwise it would spoil how to get to it and such):

Darkruler, guuuuuh. Thought I had it in the bag and then it split in half and I said fuck this shit. I wouldn't mind so much but I have to burn an effigy every time and get through some tough as dark spirits to boot. Really wish I could summon for it.

You have to attack aggressively

I'm going to assume for now that the soft cap for pvp is 150. Its definitely higher then DS1 imo
They throw so many more souls at you in this game compared to DS1, I'm at like level 120 and I've barely noticed it, in DS1 120 was a good accomplishment.

(Iron Keep)
Dragon God II
was a j-oh-ke with my Faith build.

It's not that they throw more souls at you, it's just that leveling up costs a shitload less than in Dark Souls 1. At level 120 in DS you'd need more than 90k souls to level up whereas in DS2 you just need about 20k.

Drangleic Castle is pretty awesome, especially the approach. Finally found the first bonfire and am going to pick from there tomorrow. Good progress today.

Summoning on NG is pretty random in that there's a good chance your 'helper' dies in the first ten seconds and you're stuck with a meatier boss.

Summons in NG+ are all pro as fuck, though. For obvious reasons.

There were morons summoning me and dying before I actually went to their world.

Holy shit at K
ing
V
endrick
, that was legit very sad and disturbing.

I don't know if you can actually
kill him or not but I didn't even want to try, such a sad and weird scene.

I think it's more that leveling is much cheaper. I'm at level 118 and I think I only need like 20K or even less to level up again.

I usually assume when that happens that they were being invaded and were hitting every summon sign they saw in desperation, but ended up losing the fight before I loaded in. Same for when I get summoned and the host is already through the fog fighting the boss. I usually figure they were fleeing from the invader and nabbed a sign before going through the fog to send their uninvited guest home.

Maybe I'm being excessively charitable, though.

Random question, without spoiling anything, do you at some point fight the guys with the really cool masks from the original DS2 announcement trailer back in 2012? Because I really want that mask as my armor regardless of how shitty it may be.

I didn't even get attacked in the
forest of fog
and was confused as to what the point of it was. Then again I did just hug the left wall the entire time.
