This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Glad I could find this thread.

Back on the Xbox 360, when you bought a game/video/dlc/etc., the license was tied to your specific console. If you got a new Xbox 360, you would have to do a license transfer that you could only do, like, once a year or something.

I may be getting a new Xbox One to replace my current Xbox One. Does the same process apply? Or can you "move the licenses" without going through the transfer process?

I also read something about game saves being tied to your Xbox Live account in the cloud. Has anyone had a chance to verify that this is the case?

Much appreciated.

I think you should read these two pages

Digital games

Games you purchase digitally through the Xbox Store can also be played on any Xbox One console, although you need to be signed in and connected to Xbox Live.

On any Xbox One console, sign in using your Microsoft account, and then connect to Xbox Live.
Say “Xbox, go to my games and apps,” or open the My games & apps tile on the Home screen.
Browse your collection to find the game you want to play. If it isn’t already installed, the tile will be dimmed, and you’ll be prompted to install before playing.
When the game is installed, select the game from your collection, and then select Play.
You’ll always need to be signed in and connected to Xbox Live in order to play digital games. Learn more at About My home Xbox.

Notes

Even though you can leave a game installed on another person’s console, they will not be able to play it unless they also own the game. Instead, they’ll be prompted to insert the disc or purchase a digital copy.
Regional restrictions may apply in some cases, as not all games are available in every country. For more information, see Frequently asked questions about Xbox One locales.

Overview

My home Xbox enables you to designate a specific Xbox One as your home console. The main advantage of this setting is that your family and friends can play your games on this console even when they’re signed in with their own profiles.

If you have multiple Xbox One consoles, or you regularly use consoles belonging to friends or family, you most likely want to designate the most frequently used console as the home Xbox.

How come when I hooked my Wii U up to my TV and set it to auto-detect the best format (or whatever you call it) it can use, it automatically went to 1080p? My TV is only 720p, so shouldn't it have auto-set to output in 720p?

I'm not certain but I would imagine what it means is your tv can accept 1080p content and just downscales it to 720p [768p]. Not sure though

Okay, so I've been doing a little digging but I can't seem to figure out what kind of program I could use to create a type of random text generator app. I have no coding experience but I've got some decent ideas I think, stuff that could be interesting or amusing.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Why does the ship in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron have pressurized hallways for robots that don't need to breathe?

At first there is no oxygen in the command bridge :

I assume the air or whatever combination of gasses they're using is for heating. Heat can't exist in a vacuum, right? So Transformers are aliens plus robots and I imagine that extreme deep space cold is no good for either of those aspects. Also the ship has mechanical and electrical components which again, no good with extreme cold.

I thought the same thing for Mass Effect though, I was really let down by the interior of the Geth ships. I was really hoping that they would just all hang in a rack like those combat droids from Star Wars and there wouldn't be floors, ladders, etc.

In principle, I like character action games. I like characters, I like action, awesomeness will inevitably ensue.

Unfortunately, I really, really suck at them. I've completed Devil May Cry, but never felt that I had a proper handle on how to play it. That's the thing; I can brute force my way through the games, but never get particularly refined at playing them - nor have a very good frame of reference on how to go about getting refined at it, how the various mechanics link together.

So... is there a character action game that would serve that purpose for me? Not easy as such - I don't fear a challenge - but good at laying out cause and effect and the advantages and disadvantages of various techniques in an easy-to-understand format?

My gut's saying Bayonetta based on various peoples' comments about that game, but is there something I'm missing that would work even better?

I would say it's not particularly about the game itself, but how you learn to play it / is there a guide for you to follow and practise at - for example, anyone who's struggling playing The Wonderful 101 should watch Saur's System Breakdown videos, they're fantastic: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbCOGQCF6GO0HsY1zfxStGA1Ou-7Fj6AN

Question about PS4 game installs from discs... Will the PS4 continue to install the entire game even after the progress bar is done if I just leave it sitting there on the menu for a while?

Ok even after 6 years I'm still a junior so I cant create a thread, and if this is considered hi jacking or inapproriate then please disregard.

I have been selected by a certain big company to provide insight into the future of gaming as I see it, I can't go into too much detail as it involves an NDA.

Rather than just give my ramblings I would ike to collect some views from fellow Gaffers, that either support or contradict my own views about the future of gaming. This is not my survey or research I'm just looking for a wider perspective. Cheers!

The geth ships should have just had space for maintenence and massive storage areas.

After 6 years on Gaf, you've only made 144 posts. You need 3 months + 300 posts before you can be made a member

The Future of Gaming is clearly Flappy Bird: Mcdonalds Disney Star Wars Edition played on iWatchs btw

Guys, what is the usual amount of time you have to wait after a game's release to do a LTTP? I just finished The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and I thought about doing a LTTP, but it's been 'just' four months (21 November 2013)

I think anything less than 5-6 months is frowned upon by some, but personally I think anything upwards of three is reasonable. I'd say go for it while it's fresh in your mind, I'll gladly read it.

ps+ question. lets say i have ps+ on one account and i get it on another account and let the first one expire. do i still have the free games?

Will you have the free PS+ games from the first account on the second account? No.

The only PS+ games you'll have on the second account are the ones you've downloaded on the second account while the second account has had PS+.

Why do pretty much all online multiplayer shooters have long intermission times between matches?

I can't see why I would want to spend 30 seconds to a minute essentially wasting my free time just to get into another match.

how does the PS4 cross region discs work?

I have a PAL PS4 and want have the opportunity to get some US games for super cheap. Will I insert the discs and it will just work? or do I need a US user on my PAL PS4?

Physical games [retail games] will work on any regional account on any system

DLC may be locked to a specific region though

Stupid but, did the WiFi Vita come with a wall-charger in Europe? I was just looking for mine when I realized I'm not sure if I ever had one o.o

What is this phenomenon called? Link's hat goes through his shield, it's kind of an eyesore. I just noticed it and frankly, I can't unsee it any more. It's not anything major, of course, but it's annoying. Especially with close-ups.

I remember the Dragon Age: Inquisition gameplay footage had that even more, his coat went through his two-handed sword.

Do you guys watch youtube videos at 1080p?

Do you guys watch Twitch replays?

Are there any girls here?

Anyone want to help me make a video game? I have a concept all laid out, a lot of story, and we are working in UDK 4.

Anyone here LGBT?

Why do video game manufacturers release accessories, then never support them?

Because you don't buy them.

I hadn't played my Wii U for a week or so and the gamepad didn't turn on before I plugged it in. I'm pretty sure it wasn't even at low battery when I last played (otherwise I'd have plugged it in), does that thing seriously drain battery like that when it's not even being used?

Yeah, it drains battery.

I just played Wario Land for the Virtual Boy, was this game the first one to use the going to different planes thing? And what other games do this? I know Mutant Muds, DKC Returns, and the new Kirby have this mechanic, Im curious cause I enjoyed the game and want more games that do something similar.

Not really a gaming question per se, but I'm a junior member and can't start my own thread. I recently bought some stuff from the Namco Bandai online store seeing as they're having a Tales of... sale. Tales of Graces F and Vesperia for $20? Hell yes. Along with a sweet Pac Man mousepad for $2.50! Anyway, I chose Paypal for my payment option after entering in my address and submitted my order, but it didn't take me to the Paypal page or anything. My status is "Order Pending Payment".

Under Store Help, there's a section about Paypal that says "If you choose to pay by ClickandBuy, or PayPal, you will receive instructions on how to send your payment once you submit your order." I am utterly clueless and there isn't really a support email or anything. Just curious if anyone has bought from here before and encountered this issue. You can just message me if you have. Thanks!

Yeah, it drains battery.

That's a bit stupid. I'd expect a game controller to drain almost no battery when unused for a relatively short period of time. I know I've picked up a wireless X360 controller after months and it's still had plenty of battery left.

Though battery life on the gamepad is so short that I need to keep the charger next to my couch anyway, so it's not that big of a problem.

The Fatal Fury series had a mechanic were the fight took place in two planes that you could swap through, although it wasn't as extreme as that. I'm sure the new Rayman games had stages where Rayman is sent into the background, the Mosquito stages for example, but the camera zooms into Rayman/the background layer on those.

But other than those I can't really think of any examples that do it that way. I'm sure there are others though.

Are there any good, detailed internet explanations of what is happening during online gaming, particularly getting into the nitty-gritty of packets, employed protocols, etc?

Here's something I've been curious about - why was the size of handheld/console games/saves measured in arbitrary 'blocks' instead of their actual values in the standard KB/MB/GB format?

And why has this persisted all the way up to the 3DS?

I'm going to quote someone else so I don't get it wrong.

The biggest limitation of flash devices is how they're written. Instead changing bits of memory to 0 or 1 depending on the data being written, flash memory can only change a bit from 1 to 0. Once a bit of memory has been changed to 0, it can't be changed back to 1 except by erasing it. Erasing is an operation that sets an entire range of memory, called an erase block, to all 1s. Once a block is erased, it can be written through an operation called programming which changes 1 bits to 0 bits. Since an erase block is made up of a number of pages, this makes writing a complicated operation than it would be on a hard disk. In order to write a single page to a flash device you need to erase to the block that the page belong to. However, since that will erase all the pages that belong to that block, not just the page being written, you first need to read in all of the other pages that are going to be erased. After the block is erased you then can program the erase block with the contents of the page you're trying to write and along with the content of all the other pages. Some flash devices work the other way, erasing sets the block to all 0s while programming changes 0s to 1s.

Thanks! This bit is the part that interests me:
The flash devices used in PS2 memory cards have a 528 byte page size. This is divided into a 512 byte data area and 16 byte spare area. The spare area is used to store 12 bytes of ECC data, with the remaining 4 bytes left unused. Erase blocks are 16 pages long. The are 16384 pages, for a total combined raw data area capacity 8,388,608 bytes.

So if an 8MB PS2 memory card has 16384 pages, and a block is 16 pages long, then there are 1024 blocks in the card, with each block being 8192 bytes (8KB) in size, right?
