Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

*Flame shield up*

TLoU: Left Behind was a ripoff at $15 and should have been included in the original game (less much of the weak parts and long cutscenes).

I guess I should state something that I kept hidden ...
I don't think Super Mario Galaxy is that great of a game and like Sunshine better.

Now the reason for this is because Sunshine felt like a new idea and despite the flaws, it felt like a progression of Mario gameplay. Galaxy on the other hand feels like Super Mario 64 2.0. The atmosphere and music are great I will admit, but overall the level design leaves something to be desired. Many levels are forgettable in the long run and they don't have the impact of say Super Mario 64. Galaxy 2 fixed most of this and I will say that it is a great game. I just feel like Super Mario Galaxy could have been so much more if they focused more on memorable levels like the stages where you play as Boo Mario or the beach levels. There is even one hub area that is a repeat of every level presented. If the effort in presentation was put into the level design, I would hold it as a fantastic game. However, I feel like it is a pretty average Mario game. Sunshine had diverse locations and no one world felt similar. Granted the worlds had too many missions, but that is a whole other issue. I think this is controversial because people hated Sunshine but loved Galaxy. I loved Galaxy 2, but not so much the original.

Dark Souls isn't fun.
Crisis Core is more fun than FF7

Metal Gear games aren't fun.
The atelier games aren't fun.
The tales of series is awful.
Crash bandicoot 1 had terrible level design. It was still fun though.

There has never been a good ninja gaiden.
Monster hunter has horrible combat
Skyrim is superior to Morrowind
Mario 64 had some great qualities, but the horrible controls ruined it.
2d mario games have been going downhill since Super Mario World 3

Yoshi's New Island is great, and it's a good looking game.

I think there are plenty of good post-GCN Super Monkey Ball games.

SMT and Persona are okay series, but hardly as good as other RPG franchises like Dragon Quest IMO. I love Atlus and I'm glad they get plenty of love via these series, but I don't get the hype for those games particularly.

You probably should not only have a flame shield but be in a god damn fortress man!!

God damn!!

lol

Haha those are some controversial opinions indeed. But I agree with literally anything, besides SM64 (although I never played any Crisis Core games, so I don't know what's up), I guess I kinda got used to the controls.

TLOU was a 7/10 at best.

I have mixed feelings about this statement. The first time blew me away, 9/10 at the least. But after I've replayed it for the second time, it's a whooooooole less powerful. So in that case I'd definitely say TLOU is a 7/10 if you consider the low replay value (at least for me).

The egg throwing mechanic in Yoshi's Island has horrible controls.

Both control schemes are poor.

Also, Yoshi's morphing into a mole/helicopter/etc is garbage.

Huge fan of gears of war and I liked what they did in judgment a lot....

I think there should be more strategy games on consoles.

- GTA V has a great world but gameplay and level design that I consider mediocre at best

- I hate the fact that something like 4 out of every 5 indie games use 8bit graphics. I think most of the time it's just laziness and/or lack of skill and not an "artistic" decision

- I think both the witcher 1 and 2 have a great world, story and presentation but incredibly boring gameplay and combat (comming from someone who loves RPG's)

- Monster hunter would be much more fun if the game mechanics focused on making it more fun than tedious and long

It's neither. It's that they don't have the budget or the team size for complex 3D graphics.

megaman legends 1 and 2 are the best megaman games. probably not that controversial, but just imo

turn based games feel like a waste on consoles (at least from ps1 era onward). turn based games are way better suited for handhelds.

smash bros melee has the most annoying fanbase of any fighting game at the moment. saying that melee is anything other than the best and most technical fighter ever is hearsay to that scene. a lot of the top players (basically anyone besides m2k or mango is cool), but a good chunk of the players who aren't top are just annoying (not all, but a lot). granted this can be said of any fighter or any game's fanbase, i just notice it a lot more with melee players.

Who said anything about complex 3D graphics?
There is a BIG range of options between complex 3D graphics and 8 bits.

Just look at Dust An Elysian Tail. IMO it looks much nicer than those 8 bits "retro" graphics and it's a 2D platformer made almost entirely by 1 guy

I bet it was still more difficult/expensive than going for a retro look. Also, when a game is clearly taking inspiration from older games, I think the retro look works the best (for example with Shovel Knight).

I'm a defender of the retro look, but exclusively when it's done right. If it's just low-res, uses a ton of colors simultaneously, has pixels of all sizes overlapping all over the place and has "rotating" sprites and overall stuff that makes it look like a bad flash game, then I also think it's lazy and bad.

Rare never made a great game... it made a couple of really good FPS on the N64 for an audience that was starved for even "good" games and a couple good platformers with really wonky hit detection on the SNES.

Their 3D platformers were all collect-a-thon BS that has mostly died as a genre in itself, but still infests other games in much easier to handle optional side quests.

As an aside, Tales of Symphonia was a terrible game that got a lot of attention for a similar reason, it was a JRPG on a system starved for that content, and so gamecube owners clambered to it even as the game made little sense, fell into standard archetypes and obvious plot turns. Also the enemies in cut scenes on several occasions literally step aside so the protagonists can "escape".

Are we talking the original, or the 3DS version? Because I hate the series in general. So hilariously overrated. I roll my eyes whenever someone claims it's the crowing gem of the SNES, or worse their favorite game ever. How you can enjoy such a noisy, clunky mess of a game I cannot fathom. Yoshi should have remained a steed.

Yeah, people will really hate to hear that, but it's true.

The people who say Banjo was some Mario 64-2 are crackheads.

I loved Dark Souls. Its one of my favorite games, I put a lot of time and patience into it, and have absolutely zero desire to play Dark Souls II.

Ground Zeroes is worth the average price of $25 and the majority of people complaining a.) aren't MGS fans to begin with and simply want to fit in with the mob, or b.) don't understand how business works.

After playing Titanfall... It's boring. I don't understand the hype behind this game even going in it with an open mind. I even purchasing the bundle to play it. It feels like the next COD and I think I'm over shooters like that. It's not fun, neither does it grab my attention or makes me want to play it over and over and over again. I wish it wasn't a digital copy because I would of sold it already.

Adding to that, I think Respawn doesn't deserve all this universal praise they are getting so early for making the same type of game they are known for. Despite Titanfall looking and acting different, it isn't completely different. So far their approach on video games aren't exactly radical and amazingly forward thinking. I'm hoping I the future Twitch style shooters aren't the only thing they can make.

- The Nintendo 64 was a horrible console saved by six games: Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarine of Time/Majora's Mask. That is it. Every other game on the system wasn't really exceptional compared to that generation's offerings. Yes these seven games are incredible, but outside of them the library falls pitifully flat. The American Sega Saturn had more "must own games" than the Nintendo 64 did (Nights, Guardian Heroes, Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Virtua On, House of the Dead, Virtual Fighter 2) and that's just from the top of my head. Yet that system is considered a "failure" while the Nintendo 64 is considered a "classic"?

Agreed. While I do generally consider myself a Nintendo fan, I look at the N64 as a failure on most fronts and a nasty aberration on their otherwise remarkable console history that I wish we could all just forget - a meager step up from the Virtual Boy, by my reckoning. I think the Gamecube is one of Nintendo's best moves ever, I adore my Wii, and I'm just waiting until I have the disposable money for a Wii U.

Interestingly, that generation was when I threw most of my support to the Playstation (though I gave proper love to my Saturn) and if you asked me up to the release of the Dreamcast, I'd have considered myself a newly staunch supporter of Sony. Which is why it is an unexplainably weird quirk that it was the only Sony platform I loved. Generally loathed the PS2, unimpressed by the PS3, and completely indifferent to the PS4's existence.

But yeah, N64 was really an awful console with only a handful of quality games compared to it's contemporaries. I know a bunch of kids were impressed by the 3D, but I had been doing that stuff for some time on my Playstation, Saturn, and PC (and *flinches* my Jaguar and 3DO, too).

a) An MGS fan would seem to be the most likely to get pissed off
b) They're all aware of how business works, they just don't like that it does.

I have to agree 100%

I was a hater of TF for a long time. I played the hell of of the beta and actually liked it. Then the full game came out. It's not a bad game. I guess I got burnt out quickly because it really doesn't have much to offer.

Just thought of another one.

E3 is a massive waste of time and money that should be spent elsewhere rather than attempting to build up hype for future products. If a product is good its good, I don't want a 30 minute presentation of someone playing a game on stage when it could just as easily be done on a youtube channel. Every year I dread E3 because its always a letdown, and its the ultimate form of the gaming industry's "all glitter, no soul".

That's basically what Nintendo has been doing with their directs.... Not sure it has helped much. Honestly I don't think E3 is for the hard-core enthusiasts.

As for the main topic of this thread : the best part of TLoU is the intro, which coincidentally has the least gameplay. I tried getting through that game but it was just not fun at all. ND really know how to craft memorable characters, but their games are mechanically poor.

its just there for me basically, not amazing but not horrible, just ok every now and then

plants vs zombies garden warfare has me hooked more then titanfall and I'm loving every minute

Oculus Rift is going to be a novelty that will very quickly wear off and be forgotten like a lot of similar hardware before it.

NBA Live 14 has better gameplay than NBA 2K14

Now that's what I call controversial!

And I have to agree almost completely after playing both games. Live looks like shit, but it's more enjoyable to control due to simplicity of mechanics/animations. 2K is nice to look at, but boring and unresponsive to play.

I can agree with it having low replay value (haven't played it since I beat it), but yea even playing it through the first time it was just "good", nothing more.

I hate Infamous SS.

It sucks as an open world game. Combat is repetitive. Game being so pretty only makes me sad the devs did not make gameplay to match.

In a post GTA V market, how can devs make a game world pretending to be open and have so little content?

Easily, since to me GTA V is exactly as bland as you describe Infamous 3 to be. My awe that they'd managed to pull it off on last-gen was quickly usurped by the feeling of "Holy shit how do they not make shooting fun yet?!"
Since we're doing controversial opinions and all

Go for it dude. But I'll say driving a car across GTA Vs map is more fun by itself compared to all activities I did before giving up on inFamous.

Positive reception to Bioshock Infinite and TLoU is unfounded and undeserved. They send a message that poorly designed, derivative gameplay and unsophisticated writing are okay as long as the game is has graphical fidelity and is pretentious enough to fool people into thinking it is in someway profound. The reception not only reflects poorly on reviewers, but also games and game journalism as a whole. It only goes to show how far the medium is from the superlative "art" that many hope for it to one day be.

Come at me.

Agree with you. both games have an engaging story, no doubt
problem is, when it comes to interactivity and AI for such grand schemes, video games are so far behind.

except programming and artistic skills, psychology and sociology should be required too so as to program a decent AI.

there is really not much difference from the FMV live action craze during the 90s.

waiting for the next big step. I wouldnt mind a game like Facade, even without realistic graphics

I don't like the DS4 at all, I find it really uncomfortable. The R2 and L2 are almost as bad as they were on the PS3 controller. They need to make R2 and L2 triggers. Full on, straight-up, stone cold, triggers.
