From Software responds to Dark Souls II graphics downgrade concerns

Besides, having PS4/Xbone version look like the downgraded PS3 version just with higher resolution... and having the same primitive lighting system and barebone levels would probably get them obliterated in reviews.

Why doesn't that logic translate to the PC version?

What about the next-gen tomb raider upgrade? A good deal of that was upgrading to PC level quality, and doing some improvements on other bits here and there like on Lara.

Isn't the biggest upgrade in that game Lara's character model?

why are you guys talking about a next gen port ? is it confirmed ?

from software is pretty small so i doubt they will ever re-release any game

im not shocked at all... i mean the PC port is just that a port like NBA2k14 was just a port of the old gen systems and not what the ps4/xb1 got they are not going to go back in and rework the game just for the PC. you will see modders hack the game and maybe they can re enable the lighting engine but i doubt the code is even in there anymore

They said the game was being made for PC and wasn't going to be another port. The game was already running on PC looking like it did before the downgrade. They don't need to "go back in and rework the game just for the PC" if it was only changed for the consoles. You seem to think they've removed the instructions for the lighting which would be more work than just disabling it.

if you truly what back what we saw from the original gameplay you will have to wait for a next gen version
Speculation on what the PC version will be like.
Speculation on an Xbox One or PS4 version.
Speculation on what either of the above will look like.

Because they're going to have to sell the next-gen versions as being visual upgrades from last gen, and I doubt they'll just get away with a resolution increase.

The Xbox One and PS4 weren't out when Tomb Raider was. Plus it's over a year later. Not the same situation at all.

I love the idea of devs being called out for "laziness and incompetence" when they're trying to create a game purely for our entertainment.

First, I don't think any individuals should be called out for something like that, but as a development team I think there is definitely something that is holding them back.

They set out to make a new engine that wouldn't be held back by problems found in the original game. However it is obvious that as a team they still aren't capable of doing this. They should have either caught this early on and hired more experienced engineers, or put in extra work to see the project through. We can't be sure what reason they weren't able to achieve there goal, but there is one thing for certain: these effects are absolutely obtainable on current systems. There's no reason to say its impossible and that they did everything they could to make it work.

This isn't to say they are lazy or incompetent, but I'm guessing that somewhere along the line there was a lapse of management.

And again, that isn't what people are mad about. It's the dishonesty, which so far is continuing with the PC version. Being the lead platform there is no reason why it shouldn't include the original effects. I feel as if they don't, it will be to release a next gen version, and I will be very upset if that's the case.

Then second, they aren't doing it purely for our entertainment, it's to make money first and foremost. That's fine, but when they do it in a dishonest fashion, that isn't ok with me.

I think history has shown people complain but still bend over for companies.

Yeah. It happened with TR so I can't see why it won't happen with DS II.

If by "bend over" you mean, buy and play an awesome game despite them not being perfect and meeting their every wish and demand, then yes they "bend over."

You and I clearly have a really different idea of what defines corporate sodomy. Company screwing over your water supply would count. A company that releases an awesome game that doesn't look as awesome as it did in previews isn't even on the fucking chart.

Conspiracy theories. If there is a next gen version all they have to do is release the PC version on the new consoles with higher res textures, 1080p and 60 fps. That will be enough to sell the game.

Who's to say it won't? It's not like they're out yet.

It won't because it's probably still a great game that will look good. I think once people have a game to play this will die down.

Whenever I see someone call a dev lazy I always get the impression they don't think making games is an actual job. Like they don't come in 9-5 Mon-Fri and work, they just work on the game whenever they feel like it. If something is poorly done or left out, it's never due to time constraints, it's always laziness.

Seems relevant.

Jesus that armor looks terrible...

Dark Souls had wonderful detail hidden under the console image quality. I wonder if the assets are of similar quality this time...

If you think that is bad you should see some of the far backgrounds in Dark Souls and Demons Souls. It seems that a lot of developers commonly do that on far away areas that will be seen only a few times through out the game.

From doesn't want us to resort to DSFix this time - PS2 quality on PS3 and X360, PS2 quality on PC. Peace.

Don't bother with him. You should look through his posts in this thread. Every time something gets brought up he either says how he didn't notice or encountered said problem or just mentions how bad some areas in the other games were. It's hilarious.

Not to say there weren't bad looking backgrounds in the previous games but the stuff in Dark Souls 2 is on a whole new level of bad.

You know ive been keeping my eye on this game. Didnt buy it as Im hopeful the PC version will be better but....do you guys know who From Software is/are? They are known for their shit graphics.

I understand the lighting downgrade but besides that, I dont get the other complaints as those graphics fall in line with their past output. And im talking pre-last gen. I think some of you have put From on some pedestal and now face your mistake in doing that. They are like a B team in my eyes. Love their hardcore games but they have never been one of the better dev teams overall.

Just my 2 cents. Dont take this opinion as anything but that.

I played this game for 82 hours, don't tell me what I did or did not notice.

You seem to be an expert on this game, how many hours have you played? How about the other two games?

If they didn't want us to judge them on graphics they shouldn't put focus on them during their advertising campaign.

Understood but this is nothing like what UBI has pulled.

The lighting makes a huge difference and should be called out on it but Im sure if the superior lighting was still in place, Dark Souls 2 would still have these horrible places were the textures look like shit.

Not saying you are wrong just something Ive come to expect from them.

You're right, it's nothing like what Ubi pulled. It's way worse.

This entire situation is so unsettling. Dark Souls 2 has been a fantastic game in my experiences thus far. I hate to think the sales will suffer and jeopardize future Souls games. And if a ps4 version is released with better visuals, I will gladly double dip.

Haha, I want to play this and will embrace a proper Steamworks supported DS game, but honestly I'm just as likely going to cancel my pre-order and pick it up during the summer sale. I hate what happened to this game and how Namco has treated its fans.

Uh, no. If they're selling next-gen versions, they might be selling them to people who already own both current gen and next gen platforms, and who could elect to buy cheaper, older versions of Dark Souls 2 because the more expensive next-gen version offers no worthwhile upgrades.

A Dark Souls fan would payy for 60fps and 1080p. Also people seem to forget how big a difference resolution made in Dark Souls 1 going from console to Durante edition was big.

Sighs...fucking consoles.

That shot up there is not the result of insufficient hardware power, even last-gen consoles are capable of way better graphics, that's just bad design. It's really not that hard to make background stuff like that better looking since you can trick a lot there. But they didn't in this case. They created a simple 3D mesh, put a poor grass texture on there and planted like three flat planes with 2D trees on it. It's simply bad work.

There are a couple more skyboxes in this game that are equally hideous and frankly I have seen nothing nearly as bad in the previous two Souls games.

The graphics of this game are just highly inconsistent: much more so than in DeS and DS1.
