P. Spencer: The biggest request is to bring back Shenmue

New Shenmue is pretty much my most wanted game of all time...

That being said, would a Shenmue exclusive actually sell enough systems to be worth it? Would it actually cost MS that much to fund a Shenmue game?

Ok Phil, you don't make any mentions on Shenmue, on your first day on the job to boot, and not follow thru. MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!

Would be a huge waste of cash to moneyhat a title like this. The demographic this game appeals to isn't on Xbox.

You known it'd be great to see another Shenmue, but why do I get the feeling that even though it's getting a lot of request, it still won't sell if it happened?

I don't understand if there is a massive demand for this why someone isn't funding it....? Is this just a case of only GAF and some hardcore types are screaming for it?

sure, by volume of non-unique requests, i'm sure it is the biggest request. but it's just the same 100 people sending 1000s of emails a day.

This and Banjo 3 are the only things that could make me get a Xbox one. Do it. I don't care, I will buy the console literally for one game.

Well, there really isn't much else to request in the realm of Xbox since most franchises get milked until the fanbase stops caring for it. No one is begging for another Halo, Fable or Gears of Wars.

In the realm of games people could request, I'm sure Shenmue's vocal fanbase is bigger than that of Crimson Skies, Phantom Dust or Legacy of Kain.

I wouldn't mind downloadable chapters with high-resolution DC-like graphics. The original games look good enough in high resolution.

Where were the Shenmue fans when both games were released?

It's not going to happen.
Is Yu Suzuki still at Sega?

Shenmue killed Yu Suzuki's career single-handedly.

People forget how divisive the game was back then as well, the most expensive game ever getting that notorious 6.8.

Lots of people loved it, but many hated it and it would probably be ripped to shreds by a modern audience.

I'm not sure about this actually. Many Shenmue lovers likely bought an Xbox after Dreamcast died because of all the SEGA support (myself included). I wouldn't be surprised if this group of people currently owns an XB1 as well.

That was me, too. I was a diehard SEGA supporter and jumped to the Xbox once the DC died :(. The OG Xbox was pretty sweet for SEGA support and the funding of very niche games. During the 360 era, they got away from that...but it seems like they're going back to it (which is fine by me!). Shenmue 2 came out on the XBOX, so Shenmue 3 coming to the XB1 could make sense.

And yes, I own an XB1. Although I do plan to buy a PS4 sometime down the line (during the OG XBOX days, I was bitter and didn't like Sony for a while after the DC died...I got over it as grew out of my teenager angst and realized that the PS2 was a great gaming machine).

It will cost 10s of millions to make and will probably sell 10s of thousands. Kick-starter is the only viable model for it. Any corp. dumb enough to bankroll it without the expectation that they will lose money are fools.

it was a show piece on the Dreamcast that looked amazing at the time, and the sequel got money hatted by MS in the US for their new console. I imported the game for the Dreamcast instead, but also went from the Dreamcast to the Xbox because of the close relationship.

I wish it got ported to the ps2 or anywhere this gen. It never did get a fair shot on a console with a large audience.

Shenmue probably won't happen BC it won't sell well enough.

Just do a 1/2 HD remake and if there's good sales 3 will come.

I'd love to go out on a game that even 13 years later is still talked about, hotly debated, well-respected, loved, insulted, and hated to this day. So many games are forgettable despite being big sellers. I'll take the memorable financial dud over the boring blockbuster please.

I think he is just trying to say that Shenmue fans are annoying. They are vocal, but make no mistake, a minority. Game companies are not climbing over each other to get a new Shenmue made.

An HD remake would cost far more than the sales it would get. The game itself would require reworking as well, no one would put up with the controls these days.

Shenmue is very niche, just with a very vocal fan base because of how memorable it was and the story being unfinished.

They should really stop mentioning it, it's getting a bit cruel.

Of either Sony or Microsoft throws caution to the wind and bankrolled a new Shenmue, the other's sure gonna feel stupid for having talked it up so much.

Thinking realistically, they are likely in for a huge loss if they bankroll another Shenmue game. I just don't see it appealing to anyone outside of these hardcore gaming forums. It's a nice talking point though.

Would this even sell well?

It doesn't need a budget of the same proportions today that it did a long time ago. Couple this with the fact it's guaranteed to sell better than a no-name new IP (that isn't a shooter) then it would be market viable. I don't think it will knock it out of the park sales wise, but there is a market for narrative focused games (Heavy Rain, Alan Wake, etc...).

I couldn't care less about Shenmue. But that's cool to hear for folks who are into the series!

Suzuki should take some money from Cerny and some money from Spencer just to make this happen as a multiplat release. Fans will be thankful forever. Suzuki and Shenmue 3 could be the cooperation gambit XB1 needs to get back some of that goodwill among gamers and follow through on these hype-fueling interviews.

Do it Phil. Make that game, remake the previous ones, I will happily buy them. Just make sure you actually complete the story!

If I remember correctly, the story is 11 parts, 1 and 2 cover the first 5?

I know there is a recent picture that popped up somewhere that showed concept art from all the chapters and it looked amazing.

So, a game's only as good for as many copies it sells? Give me a break.

I think it's fair to resent the notion that sales are a meaningful indicator of quality. However, it is important to keep in mind that someone in Spencer's position is probably more concerned with bottom line decisions that would make the Xbox line be profitable since he answers to shareholders more than he answers to the demographics that comprise a site like NeoGAF. Now, does that mean that there's no value whatsoever in losing money on a prestige project? No. But also keep in mind that this isn't some untested series. Aside from the fact that it would make the contingency of hardcore Shenmue fans out there incredibly happy, I'm not sure I understand why anybody else would think throwing money at another Shenmue game would be a good investment.

It would be bad enough if it were multiplatform with the consoles potentially holding the PC version back. To have it exclusive to the weakest of the three would be terrible.

Phill is not the hero Shenmue deserves, but the hero shenmue needs!

Do it phill...

There isn't a massive demand. There's a vocal demand.

But the cost to make the game would probably be prohibitive, or at least too much of a risk, especially without potentially the Japanese market.

Is it just about sales of the games? I think Shenmue sold more than one million copies and MS might be happy if even a tiny part of the hardcore fanboys will buy their console for the game. People will buy other games too and I guess in general MS is in need for sales.
I don´t think they can get the attention of their traditional 360 audience with another ton of shooters. These games are already there (Titanfall) or also available on other platforms like PS4 ...

PS: Not that I think they will do it (I still hope that a publisher one day will end this prestigious series) but there are actually tons of reasons that could make sense for the longterm success of a publisher (positive for reputation, aiming for a certain audience to sell more hardware, gaining trust with customers --> they are not just doing the generic Shooter/ Adventure with yearly updates, etc.)
