P. Spencer: The biggest request is to bring back Shenmue

I'd love to go out on a game that even 13 years later is still talked about, hotly debated, well-respected, loved, insulted, and hated to this day. So many games are forgettable despite being big sellers. I'll take the memorable financial dud over the boring blockbuster please.

It's a great game, highly important and Yu Suzuki has one of the best catalogues of games developed out of anyone in the industry ever.

Shenmue is the poster-child though for wreckless Sega though. It could never have recouped its costs, in the same way Dreamcast would never have done well enough to make up for their previous mistakes.

Wreckless Sega made a lot of great things happen, but when it all finally collapsed I guess the blame started flying around. Sad that Yu Suzuki seemed to get some of it, it wasn't his mistake or his failing.

I don't know if Phil will be able to bring us Shenmue III but he'll probably give us Phantom Dust 2.
Yep and I'm gonna be way more happy with Phantom Dust. Shenmue is a long shot. Spencer likes to tease games in development but this tone doesn't sound like he is planning on bringing it. The way he was teasing phantom dust I will be pissed if it doesn't happen.

It would be bad enough if it were multiplatform with the consoles potentially holding the PC version back. To have it exclusive to the weakest of the three would be terrible.

Have you ever heard the phrase "beggars can't be choosers" before? Currently, the series is dead and buried. If it was announced for mobile platforms tomorrow, that should be met with celebration. The idea that an Xbox One version would be a disappointing compromise is just as bizarre as the people out there that think that Bayo 2 on Wii U is holding that game back.

I'd buy it even though for some reason i never played Shenmue 2.
I did play the first one though on Dreamcast and loved it at the time even though again i can't remember much about it. In fact all i remember about the first Shenmue was walking around and examining your house, walking around your little village, speaking to your girlfriend at night in that little park area when those guys attack you, working on the docks with that annoying forklift truck, and i remember the end of the game pissing me off greatly when you get on the ship to go somewhere and the game just ends lol.

So yeah i don't remember much about it but i do remember loving the first game.

I wouldn't be suprised if they do a HD remake of the first 2 games, release them and see how sales go.

Too bad I'd never get to play it if it's an Xbox One exclusive. :(

Fuck third party exclusives in this day and age.

If a game would have never existed without the funding of those behind it (even with an exclusive)...I'd rather have that than nothing.

PS4 exclusive, Wii U exclusive, X1 exclusive......DS exclusive...whatever....if it's good I'm going to play it. I loved 1 and 2....and I have zero allegiance to any company in this case.

So, a game's only as good for as many copies it sells? Give me a break.

Uh neither MS nor Sony are charities. They fund games with the intent to break even and then profit.

So my point stands, Shenmue 3 wouldn't even move 1m copies. Definitely wouldn't sell enough to justify development costs. You people have romanticized Sony and MS to the point of delusion. Shenmue 3 isn't getting made.

I would support the ryse team working on an Xbox shen mue

So you would rather the game didn't exist rather than it existing but just not on the console you own?.
I'm pretty sure if Shenmue 3 did end up being exclusive to XB1 it would be because Microsoft are funding the game.

Oh no, a potentially fun game that didn't make money for some executive. What a horrible prospect to think about.

In all fairness, Shenmue 2 was an Xbox exclusive in North America:

It did get a PAL release on the Dreamcast in the UK though.

Oh! This I did not know! Thanks!

There isn't a massive demand. There's a vocal demand.

But the cost to make the game would probably be prohibitive, or at least too much of a risk, especially without potentially the Japanese market.

Ah right. I must say I didn't play the originals but since being on GAF I've watched a few youtube vids. Looks a decent enough game. I'm sure with the right marketing behind it, it could do well.

Assassins Creed VI: Shenmue

;)

Yes, but I'm not begging. I'd rather have it not exist than be forced to compromise after all this time.

I'll never understand this...

Forced to compromise?

I don't feel forced to compromise to play The Show or New Super Mario Brothers....I did have to buy hardware for it though. If a company fully funds a game and/or owns it (1st/2nd party/funded 3rd party)....I want it. Screw this "I'd rather it didn't exist trash."

I'd love to see more love letters the "hardcore" like this.....no matter who puts them out.

That's not entirely the point though. This early in a consoles cycle, a game like Shenmue 3, may indeed sell a system to customers who didn't have an intent to purchase the XB1. Looking at the people in this thread and the people on my twitter feed, I see a lot of Sony and Nintendo fans who would seriously consider buying an XB1 for that. For MS, thatmay be enough to warrant it.

Shenmue I and II were both on the OG Xbox and neither were on any Playstation platforms, which probably gives Microsoft a bigger likelihood of procuring Shenmue III as an exclusive. They're also in a stronger position to fund them. Times have changed, there are more variables to consider than instal base. Platinum clearly didn't care about the Wii U's instal base, they simply wanted to make the game, so I think whichever platform gets the exclusivity rights is the one who puts up the most money.

Sony prefers to invest in their own 1st party stable (which is the right move imo) and only rarely actively pursue 3rd party exclusives, and with the entire company being in a dire situation financially speaking, I don't think it's likely they would make that investment - unless the positive PR it would garner is enough for them to deem worth it, even if the game doesn't sell well.

That being said, Microsoft seems to be in constant need for positive PR, and with Phil Spencer talking of reboots and name dropping Shenmue on more than one occasion, I can see him making an aggressive play.

Suffice to say, it's interesting how both companies stand to gain from a third instalment of a franchise that hasn't seen a new iteration in over decade, and one that was never a big seller to begin with,

Shenmue 1&2 HD for $29.99. Draw in new and old fans and then, when everyone is dying for more Ryo, unleash the Shenmue 3.

I'll never understand this...

Forced to compromise?

Yes. It's crazy. I'm not saying that I'd be elated at the prospect of Shenmue being exclusive to the Xbox One as opposed to being multiplatform, but if that's how things turned out, it would mean only one thing: MS was the only one willing to fund it. And whatever your hangups are with the Xbox One, it's a significantly more powerful machine than the Dreamcast was. So if you're a fan of Shenmue, Xbox One exclusivity definitely wouldn't be a bad thing.

now that I think about it, this is the kind of thing a desperate MS might do right now to win some street cred back. maybe it'll happen.

Whoa there, Sally!

Fuck, I sold the Xbone claiming I would only buy another one when they announce Shenmue 3 exclusive.

Also for a dead game, Shenmue sure does get talked about a lot

and

don't know why Shenmue gets so much praise. It looks like a moviegame with a lot of simon says quicktime events.

I'm sure there's hundreds reviews and a few hundred thousand user reviews that will help you understand what you want to know.

what the game "looks like" from YouTube walkthroughs isn't the whole thing

I agree. I'm one of those big fans of the franchise too though..lol.

I wouldn't care who or what funds it. Even if it was on something I couldn't, or wouldn't, buy at this moment...I'd be happy to know it existed.

It's like Dead Rising 3 or Infamous.....I wouldn't consider either of those "mainstream", but I'm glad both studios got to put out a 3rd game. Whether I'm interested in one or the other...or not.

I consider that "making games for gamers".

Do you think a Shenmue title could be developed given the budget of a Tearaway or a Puppeteer?

I'm not Yu Suzuki so I don't know. I don't think anyone is debating that backing a new Shenmue title is backing a financial dud. How much of a dud it would be is basically either speculation or substance for a shitty drive-by post.

Yes, but I'm not begging. I'd rather have it not exist than be forced to compromise after all this time.

The world didn't stop since Shenmue 2. Shenmue 3 IF it happens, will always be compromised one way or the other for the militant fan base. It won't have the scope of the first 2 games, it will use new design conventions to try to maximize its target audience. (And with this it will risk to lose its base audience and not gaining enough new players to sustain such an investment.)

Do I still want it? Yes. Morbidly yes. But realistically it won't be the Shenmue 3 we want. That would be impossible in this day and age.

Will it happen? I don't think so.
