Mercenary Kings on PS4: It's Contra/Metal Slug meets Monster Hunter

The item fetching missions on solo or even with two people are kind of a drag, they go on for far too long. Wouldn't be as much of an issue if the levels were bigger I guess, I find myself having to backtrack a lot and it just gets boring. The game really seems to be made around four person coop. I also wish the controls felt more responsive, the delay in jumping doesn't feel right to me.

It's fun to play in short bursts regardless, though.

Yep I love this game. I made it to the city area so far am starting to get some real nice pieces for my gun, the music is great, and I love how wide open the game is. If I had any complaints it's that I would like to know "where" the bosses spawn on the map because search for them can be a pain in the ass especially when they run away and you have to chase them.

I've only fought one boss so far (the Steel Soldier), but the skull location where he's at will be highlighted once you find him the first time. You just have to keep an eye on the map because he keeps moving around (although it's not frequent). I'm not sure if that applies for the rest of the bosses though.

It's a fun game, but I have one...important complaint.

I wish we could turn off voices. Really don't like them. Keep the Metal Slug screams but cut everything else out.

My same exact hang-ups.
The delay jumping has lead to some damage and deaths due to timing. Also of note are the ladders, how when you're trying to aim and shoot while near one you'll end up climbing by mistake.

The game would have greatly benefited from a better map and 8-way directional shooting. I may play a little more tomorrow if I have the patience.

Yeah, the stuttering in the loading screens can be pretty rough. It didn't impact gameplay but it is a little rough. And speaking of crashes, mine crashed on the splash screen on startup, the first game on PS4 that's ever crashed for me. Did it at least save before it crashed on you?

nuuuuuoope... but it was only the first mission... and hasnt crashed since... twittered tribute games to let em know... they said theyre on top of it so... we'll see.

Has anyone figured out how to make a private lobby? I created an invite only session with one friend, and other people still joined it :/ They ended up dying, and costing us money and failing our missions. If i don't party up with 3 friends, I'm kinda forced to play solo. Hope that gets fixed soon.

I went to check this out, saw that its rated M, walked away. Devs need to grow up. Nudity and gore in a side scroller? Comon. That's just pointless.

Man, i totally got lost on the 2nd mission.
I freed like 6 hostages, but couldn't find the guy i was supposed to find and there's an area at the left of the map (in both sections) that i just couldn't access
. Tomorrow i will give it another try, but this seems like the kind of game i would enjoy more with my cousins :)

Game crashed as I returned to the hub after a mission.. didn't get credit for the items I got or the mission. ugh, just got enough for a new bionic mod

edit: re: M rating. the artist is known for fucked up pixel art, it's not surprising.

I laughed for a bit longer than I should have. I wish this game had enough definition to even elaborate on all those things. It's so... dated? Not my style. I'm glad I didn't pay for this though. Might stop playing already.

Is it the graphics that turn you off, or you just don't like the gameplay?

I've got a PS4 but only 1 controller. Is it possible for my friend to come over and play as the 2nd Player using his PS Vita?

Wow this game is hard or I suck. I had 3 mins left on the first mission and died twice by the time I finished.
Wait, is it already out? Or are you talking about the PC version?

Liking this game so far, even in just single player. Some of the mechanics are pretty damn annoying the weird delay jump and not being able to shoot diagonal is ridiculous.

We need custom soundtracks available ASAP

I don't see how the perspective of the game is related to the content. Do you object to gore and nudity in all 2D oriented games and is there something that makes such content more acceptable in three dimensions?

It was a slow start for me. The game is definitely rough around the edges. Protip: do the hostage rescue mission first so you can start customizing weapons. Playing with others is also fun (can set it to public and it'll try to find an online game for you), though sometimes the people sit in the hub forever and never start a mission.

Once I started upgrading weapons and seeing the MH patterns, it clicked and now it's a game I can see myself playing a lot.

Assualt rifles suck, even the starting pistol is better. Shotgun ftw

ARs take so much ammo to kill an enemy. shotgun is practically one hit kill for most things

Might have to go shotgun then, never want to go AR or Sub route because of the damage reduction plus more reloading means more crits.

Is there no way to keep random people from jumping on your game? I have it on invite but people still jump in.

Confusion from the launch trailer. I figured local coop was played on the same screen.
Some people think it is splitscreen even when you play on the same tv.

Can someone who has the game tell me?

You do realize this draws a lot of inspiration from Metal Slug, right? Metal Slug also had light violence and M.Kings is no worse in that regard.

Did they patch in missions after 60? Last time I played it was back in December and I unlocked almost everything up to mission 60.
Will go back to it later today.

Agreed. Nudity and gore aside the gameplay is great so I don't see a problem here.

There's a trophy for "speed running" all 100+ missions on the PS4 version so yeah, there is definitely more than 60.

I dont really care for this game. I was excited to get home from work to play it. Now that I've played it for about an hour and half or two. I was not happy with it. Glad it's free though.

It's some little things that adds up that I dont like.

- The delayed jump, i've taken too much damage because when I tried to time my jumps, I did not take into account of the delay. Why would they add that in a twitch based shooter like that??? It feels like they added that in there for artificial difficulty, but its more of an annoyance than anything. Theres like three bullets coming at me, If my character jumped when I pressed the button like I thought he'd do, he wouldn't have taken any damage, but he jumped too late and got hit.

- Cant shoot diagonally, this is pretty much the game killer for me. shooting up, down, left and right is killing the enjoyment for me. It's like my mind cant get over that because I constantly keep trying to shoot things thats coming at me from an angle, like those stupid robots flying towards you closing the distance and I would try to shoot them, but I keep forgetting I cant shoot in that direction. I have to put myself in harms way to line up a shot. I could shoot diagonally in hard corps and metal slug, so my brain is accustomed to it and when I try to shot at an angle and cant do it, my brain, its like……..WTF??? and gets hella confused.

- Respawning enemies, since I cant shoot in an angle, I sometimes have to run back and jump to take the shot, because the enemy has closed the distance since they are coming at me from an angle but when I run back, the enemies I JUST KILLED about two seconds ago is there, and I run into them, and ake some damage, so now I got to kill the re-spawned enemies and plus the enemy I was trying to kill before. This is just another annoyance, but i wouldnt mind it if I could aim diagonally so I can at least take them out from a distance on a higher or lower platform and wouldnt have to back track and move so much.

- Gear of war reload mechanic, for some reason, that reload mechanic, just doesnt feel right in this game. I see it adds a level of difficulty, but I just dont like when an enemy is like one second away from hitting me because I cant aim diagonally and i finally line up the shot and try to take the shot, only to start the reload mechanic and in the rush of spamming the shooting trigger trying to kill this fool, I dont pay attention to the bar, and dont hit the reload button in time and i get hit and jam the gun and cant shoot for a period…….man got dammit.

I get so frustrated because with the way the aiming is, it encourages lots of movement and character placement to line up shots since you cant shoot diagonally, but the respawning enemies is a direct violation to that as if you move a bit too much off the screen, now you got more enemies to deal with.

So yea, I pretty much suck at this game, but its strange because i was really good at contra and hard corps and I own and beaten all the metal slugs on xbox 360 on the harder settings so I thought this game would be more like those games as I loved those games. But I see there's a lot of differences in this game that I dont like.

Man, im just glad this game was free, because i'd been mad if I paid for it. Aint mad or bitching or anything, I just didnt want to post "didnt like the game" and kept it moving without at least telling you why I didnt like it. So I aint gon sweat it. Just gon delete it and move a long.

Game has crashed like 3 times for me already. What the fuck is going on with some of these indie titles with no quality control?

Yeah the game in general is just a lot funner playing with people. Also makes the gathering missions a lot more bearable.

Yeah I've had 3 or 4 crashes when I set my game to public. Now that I ranked up everything seems to be working fine.

I'm pretty sure you can't shoot diagonally in Metal Slug outside the Heavy Machine Gun and the Laser (in Metal Slug 6). Other than that, thanks for the impressions.

Yup, you're correct. Only certain guns let you shoot diagonally in Metal Slug.

Personally, I think this game gets a lot better once you get more customization on your guns, but it's not a whole lot like Metal Slug. Too slow and methodical.
