Project CARS (crowdsourcing) racing sim by Slightly Mad Studios (fully funded 3.75M)

For the love of Jesus, why bother with sims on a console
Many people either can't or won't own a gaming PC and stick to gaming on consoles; I know of quite a few people who would love to play the PC only sims but either cannot afford or justify the cost of a gaming PC.

SMS have seen a gap in the marketplace and are releasing a 'PC racing sim' on consoles and it'll be a huge success for SMS (and the big $ investors in the project). A successful release of CARS will benefit all gamers irrespective of platform.

Because Wii U owners have no other games to play herp derp

This game is seriously looking great though. Did they confirm what would be on the Wii U pad during gameplay?

We have seen these:

and

The gamepad just screams new innovations for gameplay and is a perfect match when thinking about using the gyroscope as a handheld wheel like in Mario Kart Wii and showing data on the screen such as a map, telemetry, speedo, or rear view mirror. When you couple that with Miiverse functionality and community it’s a no-brainer.”

But not that much information lately. Maybe the forum members know more.

The April fools gag had me stumped for a while; I though there was no way it would be true but wasn't sure until I'd read the WMD forum. Cheeky gits!

Surprised to see the Wii U leading the poll. I will say this is one of the digital games I'm really looking forward to. So it's definitely a purchase by me. Especially if the Wii U gamepad is going to be used to replicate a driving wheel. I don't have to buy one. That on top of the game looking amazing and if it's even close to how the PC footage is looking I'll be happy with it visually. I need something like this and do not want to be sitting at my PC to play a racer.

This will shock a lot of people, but get a load of the poll they put up:

The winning platform. :O

Surely this is trolling. I don't own a WiiU (I kinda want one tho) but I'll admit that having all the telemetry stuff on the 2nd screen is pretty cool.

I could never give up using my fanatec though and I suppose a 2nd small screen added onto the wheel assembly to show all the telemetry data would be hard to get all setup right?

Why not display a rearview mirror in it, that would still work with a wheel setup. The Gamepad comes with a stand which could easily be clamped or screwed onto a racing setup.

Personally I'm going to get this on WiiU in the meantime, as I won't get the PC version until I can afford a better PC.. interested in seeing what they'll do with that version in terms of features.

Not only these (they get posted on a lot of places), primary because of the WiiU specs.
If I recall correctly, as part of using a console development system (at least for Wii U, not sure about other consoles since I have not personally developed for them), you are not allowed per the NDA to talk about the devkit (console?) specifications, the development tools, or pretty much anything else, so yeah.

Having just watched that trailer... there's still something about it I can't put my finger on that makes it seem less realistic than games which obviously don't look as good. For example, I'm sure I've seen trailers for AC that could do better at passing for "real life" or what have you.

Very weird. Wish I could be more specific about it.

I have been thinking that for a long time but I've been afraid to say because I would get flamed for that.

pCARS is a mixed bag at the moment. But that's what you get with an unfinished product. AC it's too. Some people claim AC lighting is better, but it looks better just under some very especific circumstances.

I don't know why, but there's a lot of people in the sim world that are very against pCARS, and have been since the very begining. Probably some grudge against Ian? Can't tell. It's a very odd situation, because other people raise fair concerns and they get flamed, because many pCARS supporters are tired of these hateful fellows and can't tell if the complain comes from a hater or from a normal person.

Edit. I'll add that people expect pCARS to be perfect, and they will criticise any minor flaw amd ,ake a big thing out of it. And the opposite happens as well, people will ignore some minor flaws just because the game is so good in almost every other aspect. For some reason, talking about pCARS is complicated.

That most recent one Blim posted had things sticking out like obvious 2D textures for things like water (both on the car and airborne) but it's likely that happens with other games as well. Maybe it's just that the fidelity of the rest of the game (models etc.) is so high, that anything that isn't of the same quality just pulls the game back from any kind of realism completely.

Who knows?

Very true. Perhaps because they asked for so much (money) from people before Kickstarting things became a big thing, and that they seemed to change goalposts frequently regarding certain game decisions (to some people, anyway), whereas other up-and-coming titles weren't so quick to ask for money (see: AC), relatively speaking. It's an interesting case, for sure.

Did not even realize it was also coming to the WiiU until just now.
Since I am a geek who owns all the consoles and a gaming PC, I may actually have to consider picking it up on the WiiU now as the GamePad integration has me intrigued.

For the love of Jesus, why bother with sims on a console
As indicated above, I also own a gaming PC, have for many, many years now, but I also have owned pretty much every console released since the 80's. I tend not to limit myself when it comes to gaming.

And as much as this surprised fellow PC gamers, my preferred way of playing these days, and for the past 6 years or so actually, has been consoles. Here is why...

  • I work in front of a computer all damn day. At one point in time I had no problem sitting in front of a computer at night as well to play games, but it eventually did begin to take it's toll on me. Was mentally draining.
  • I also developed De Quervain's Tendinosis as a result of being on the computer all of the time. So a orthopedic Doctor actually told me if I wanted to continue playing video games, using a controller was the way to go. So not kidding when I say it was Doctors Orders
  • A couch is much more damn comfortable than a computer chair
  • My nice HDTV is also much bigger than my monitors (sure I could spend more money on larger, better monitors, but I also needed a nice HDTV for TV viewing
  • My home theater setup is kick ass. I make a decent living and as such I treat myself to nice toys. So I have a pretty good 7.1 surround sound setup in my TV room. It is much better than my 5.1 setup in my office.
  • Last but not least, my time is extremely limited these days to actually play games. I prefer the simplicity of playing on a console vs a PC from a time perspective. Granted PC gaming has made HUGE leaps and bounds in regards to ease of use, however I still usually have to update a driver, etc when I do play a game since I am not on top of things like I used to be. That 5-10 minutes it takes to do that could be 5-10 more minutes I am just playing.

So perhaps this list will shed some light as to why, even as a fellow PC gamer, for my own personal situation, consoles is what I prefer to play on these days.

Interesting enough, I do plan on building a new Gaming PC in the upcoming months, but that is simply because my current gaming build is starting to show it's age. Not because it is my primary platform.

Different strokes for different folks.

I think that most people that have no access to the game and do not follow the development of the game, often do not realise that, how good it might have looked from the beginning, most of the game (tracks/lighting/particle effects) still is/was not finished. The water spray for example still needs to be properly implemented, the particle system is just now being updated and smoke/dust were first on the agenda, so that all still has to be done.

I play both on regular occasions and AC definitely does look good imo, but definitely not as good or real as pCARS does at times. Then again there are people in the sim racing world that think iRacing looks the most realistic of them all (for me "flat") , as some people in the sim world seem to dislike every modern graphics rendering future (HDR/bloom/dof/etc.) and the less of them the more they like it, I'm not one of them ;)

If you look at the pic of the first pass of their smoke implementation that I posted earlier or these shots I picked from the last pages of the screenshot thread (overcast/clear weather) and specially the track ones, then I have to look a second time to not be fooled.

Whoops, I didn't even realize the manager logo deadline was coming up April 15th. I guess I need to think up some silly banner to put ingame. :P

I'd be down to using NeoGAF for my banner as I've no idea what I'm going to do with it yet (though I could delay mine for any upcoming DLC tracks, in case I manage to form my own studio or something).

Not to challenge your opinion, but your points in favour of consoles don't work so well when you can hook a PC up to a TV and play that way.

Again, not trying to change your mind or anything.

Jonz sent us a 2560x1440 version of his sound trailer, and it's quite awesome to watch (and listen, of course) :)
It's 3.99 GB big, so torrent only, but our stream is also quite good otherwise!

Thanks for the high resolution video.

2560x1440 is my monitor native resolution so it was a great opportunity to check of how the game has progressed lately.

I had joined the project nearly from its start but i ask for a refund 3-4 months ago as i am not interested anymore for a another semi-simulation (if not arcade for me) racing game.

Also the graphics of this game are way too hyped. The actual gameplay is nothing near the "photomode" sceenshots i see everywhere.

There's no photomode in this game.

Fiddling with camera in replay mode is closest thing. And visuals don't get better there.

The game looks really good in screenshots but I have yet to see gameplay footage looking as good.
Well, basically the game looks as good as pics, since there's no photo mode or anything like that. What you see is what you play. Obviously, some conditions and some circumtances look better than others.

Static screens look nice but then so does GT6 photo mode. I've played a couple of the recent build videos on youtube and whilst it looks better than GT6 it's making me more hyped for GT7. Visually this game isn't screaming next generation to me right now.

Yea, you must then realize that some tracks and cars are more complete than others, and that there is no photo mode...

I'm confused, did you play the game or did you base the game's graphics on heavily compressed youtube footage?

Your choice to judge a game's graphics by YT quality videos. I wouldn't. The game is far beyond anything previous gen could ever dream to do. Besides, it's not yet finished. People tend to forget this.

How's that scary? O_o

It means the game will be the best-looking racing title to date AND run wonderfully on contemporary PC's. I can vouch for the alpha's stability. Yeah, you get the odd crash but in terms of FPS and what you get for that on-screen.. it's glorious.

PS4/X1/WiiU development seems to be coming along nicely as well.
