Why is racism in high fashion still wildly accepted?

I'm flipping through this VMAN (high end fashion magazine) and I've yet to see a model that isn't white. Before you say I shouldn't use one magazine to judge the entire industry, realize the ads in most of these magazines are the same, only the editorials really differentiate each other and better believe the editorials rarely have diversity. For as "accepting" as the fashion world claims to be, it's disheartening to see the reality says the opposite.

Racism, body image issues, that thread a couple of weeks back about people at the photo shoots being exploited for sex... Why does anyone even give money to these things?

I honestly believe that people should chill regarding the racism issue. In 2014 EVERYONE gets a shot in life.

I believe if you have the talent or in this case the look the designer wanted you would get the job. If a designer used only female Asian models for a 2014 look I wouldn't see us white people making a fuss tbh.

I'm being serious, certain designs may look better with a certain ethnicity. That is all it is not a racist issue what so ever.

There are so many Black & Asian etc models doing so much work I honestly don't see your point Op.

Not everything has to have an equal share of models.

I'm looking at Vogue and Marie Claire right now and both are a veritable Benetton rainbow.

Every model looks like an alien but black, Hispanic and Asian are all plentiful in the ads and articles.

I would think high fashion = you have a lot of money ... a lot of money is generally associated with white people ... hence, they are just demonstrating to their target audience, same as anything else in this world ... I think it has less to do with racism and more to do with money ...

There are more white people than black people? High fashion has to convince very wealthy people that clothing is worth a lot of money. Most of those very wealthy people are white socialites.

I find it surprising actually... I'd think fashion designers would want to highlight all kinds of exotic looks, etc.

This shit is everywhere. I'm white and I'm offended by BET. Feels racist to me, I also remember Jamie fox accepting an award and say black people are the best race or some shit and that bothered me.

Nice job trying to derail the thread with nonsense.

What if the designers preferred to use white models? Think of the skin tone as a base. Perhaps all the designers for that magazine prefer a white/light base. Is that racism or preference? I would joke around and say "Oh, that's racist!", but really, it's just a preference. I don't see anything about portraying race superiority.

: poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race
: the belief that some races of people are better than others

Even though there is a lot of money in it, it is still kind of a niche thing. But there are a diverse set of people in the levels below the ultra high end.

Lots of brands have pretty diverse models now. I think the last Stone Island video I saw had zero white people in it.

I don't know, the model industry just has a lot of white people in it.

I think black people are better than white people (I'm part-white btw) because they survived slavery and rose above it. I've yet to seen white people freely traded as property in the U.S. It disgusts me when I see those videos of (almost always) white cops usually brutalizing a black guy.

I actually had a dumb-ass (white, of course) friend of mine tell me that she thinks black people are not discriminated against both by police and rich, corporate America. She thinks it's totally "ridiculous that black people act like they're targeted... they're the ones who are most likely to do crime/become gangbangers!" Ahahahaha. Oh man. That was a funny conversation. I was blown away when I heard her say that horseshit.

I also think it's funny when white people are upset that black people have their own TV channel. And...? So what? Are Filipinos not allowed to have their own TV channels either?

Anyways, racism in high fashion doesn't surprise me at all because "white women" are supposed to be the epitome of beauty in this society. I wonder why...? Couldn't be because rich white people control the media, could it? Nah.

This. They discriminate on entirely different things. They need to be tall, angular, and crazy thin and they will get hired no matter what color they are. High fashion is probably more racially diverse than any other aspect of fashion which can tend to be a bit white washed in the US.

It's just society's eurocentric standards of beauty, we've been brain-washed since youth to find white skin the most desirable one to have, it's unfortunate we still haven't gotten past that.

I think this thread could use the opinions of the men's and women's fashion OTs, because NeoGAF knows games, we don't know the intricacies of high fashion.

Let's start naming famous high end fashion designers that aren't white...

Are white people only attracted to white people? Obviously not.

But there may be something in that fashion world that is regressive. Maybe the love of being a fashion designer is based upon a fetishization of the current world of fashion, and as such, it rarely changes. It all still looks a little bit like its still trying to be 1930s French culture, or whatever.

It's just society's eurocentric standards of beauty, we've been brain-washed since youth to find white skin the most desirable one to have, it's unfortunate we still haven't gotten past that.

It's even creepier that it's happened to entirely non-white cultures. There are cultures who have learned to depreciate their own features.

If they were better maybe they wouldn't have been enslaved in the first place.

Honestly, from what I've seen there is a really good balance of different races represented in high fashion on runways at least :/ Editorial can be a different story though....

The fashion threads on neogaf don't either :v

Bite your tongue omg

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
It's weird, I went on their website and saw at 7 out of the maybe 39 image had black men.. and no asian or south asian.. or hispanic..

Their website makes me angry.

If they were better maybe they wouldn't have been enslaved in the first place.

If the proportion of white people in an industry is bigger than the proportion of white people in the US, I think there's a problem.

Why just the US? And would that mean the problem exists until every race is proportionally represented in all industries?

Welp. This thread will become a locked graveyard in 5-4-3...

Some weird ass comments from both sides. Good god.

Is it okay for them to focus on only skinny or good looking people? The ratios are way off on that too compared to the US population. I think over 50% of the US population is obese.
