Winter-Spring 2014 Anime |OT3| People incapable of guilt usually do have a good time

Let's do a check on this - how many boys did the MC meet who wanted to be his friend? One. That's your standard one bro that your MC has in a harem show, see this season with Nisekoi, or any harem show ever made. How many women did he meet that shared more than one scene and who will no doubt be main characters? That's right, loads. Those are all going to want to his dick. Because.

I feel the prerequisite for a harem is that most of the girls like the MC and are are actively trying to get together with him. And the MC is trying to chose someone but has feelings for almost all of them. In this case, Mahouka doesn't do that. Nisekoi does do this and is, in fact, a harem.

To be honest, I might have watched Mahouka if the main couple had been the bro and the redhead, and Gary Stu/Cersei were the hillbilly couple everyone laughed at behind their backs.

I'm relying on you all to determine what the best hatewatch of the season is going to be because without an Umetsu anime airing I just feel lost now.

I don't mind that the MC's an unlikeable ass but this was pretty boring with production values to match. zzzzzzz

No Game No Life will take all the negative attention away from Mahouka, anyways. It's the worst thing ever.

It doesn't have nearly as much initial attention though, and I think that's probably the most important thing. I agree with Basileus that there will probably be far worse this season, but there's a good chance that they'll be quickly forgotten or ignored while Mahouka might not. I guess it depends on how popular Mahouka becomes outside of AnimeGAF.

I hate bagging on shows too much, but No Game No Life's color design is so ugly! I don't understand who decided it'd look like that or why!

Its funny given all the incest rage given we also have Game of Thrones which has full on twincest with children to boot, and that barely gets a murmur from what I can tell. More people were upset about what Jamie did to Bran.

With royal families it's to be expected.

Royal families and the fact that it's not anime and japanese.

Bad comparison given intent and all that. The incest junk in Mahouka is meant to titillate. The incest in Game of Thrones is explicitly tied to an attempt at murder to kick it off.

It's also really vilified in-universe.

Which is especially hilarious because further on in the series, and especially in the books, everybody is all up in Jaime's dick because he's actually a really fucking great character. Myself included, I love Jaime now.

But I'm a Jon Snow Broda.

"I will tell the entire school that the Computer Club <bleep>ed this girl."

Lol!!! I remember that scene. Still my favorite one out of the entire episode. I love how right before she does what she does she got this devilish twinkle in her eyes. It made it so much better because you knew she was up to no good when she made that face. Kyon is kind of a buzzkill but that's part of his character is to bounce off Haruhi and question everything.

I'm pretty sure GoT watchers don't ship Jamie/Cersei and the incest in GoT is an in-depth plot device that serves the story well.

I love Jamie too. I was a huge Jon and Aria fan to start with...though I've cooled on Aria a bit.I haven't really liked where she's gone as a character.

Mushishi shall save us from these stupid harems. Though I guess its too niche to call a saviour of anime. Still pissed about Space Dandy. Could of been something really special but instead they went with some lame comedy series with no over arching plot.

It's kinda weird how you praise Mushishi yet deride Space Dandy for not having an overarching plot in the same post, lol.

There's a huge, huge difference between Game of Thrones and your average brotherfucker anime. In GoT, it's not for the sexual gratification of the viewer. It's not pandering to a fetish. It's not encouraging or glorifying a sick fantasy. It's in the story because it serves an actual, valid narrative purpose; it's an extremely important plot point that sets the entire conflict in motion. It's supposed to be revolting, supposed to be emblematic of a family's depravity and the taboo lengths that it will go to to consolidate power. There's really no comparison here at all.

One thing that I don't understand is people judging an anime based of a first episode which I simply can't comprehend, like if I did that I would of dropped so many good anime like Hunter X Hunter, FullMetal Alchemist, Log Horizon, and etc.

Well with Mushishi is works well. Each episode has enough development and has a fitting end. With Space Dandy its just stupid humour. Some times you get the stand out episode but all together its a poor package. I felt it would a million times better being a space adventure.

Love how not having an over-arching plot is somehow seen as a negative these days.

It's not really about not having an over-arching plot more like the (initial) presentation it gives the viewer. Take for example I enjoyed Fate/Zero and I'm also enjoying the hell out of Puchimas. Both are arguably on both ends of the spectrum but I am able to enjoy both because they know what type of entertainment they are going to give up right from the get-go.

In this case, though, it's not really people judging Mahouka by its first episode. Mahouka's reputation preceded it. Most people in this thread probably already had formed an opinion before they watched it.

I agree that the initial presentation is very important. A book on writing I read labeled it as a "promise to the reader" and I think it's a very good concept.

Well, when only one episode is currently out, it's not possible to judge an anime by anything else.

And sure, there are some series which improve dramatically after the first episode, but in general, the first episode tells you what you're going to get, and a series declining after that is far more common than the inverse.

So you can't really blame people for dropping an anime after one episode if they don't like it, and they can always pick it back up if it dramatically improves.

But.... Fullmetal Alchemist had a great first episode. Unless your talking about Brotherhood.

I think it ultimately depends on how a show handles that aspect.

Mushishi seems to handle it pretty well (based on what people said), but some series do suffer from the lack of an overarching plot (and/or character development)

I'm not gonna lie if the incest aspect is what bothers you the most about the anime, don't bother watching anymore as it never really goes away and keeps going just as strong.

I'm able to ignore it in this particular case, but that's not always the case. As long as it doesn't go further than mega brother-complex I'll keep reading/watching.

That reputation is the only reason most people watched it, otherwise it'd be like every other incest anime (most more depraved than Mahouka) or generic harem school show that aren't watched by most of the thread.

Though I think there was plenty to judge by in that first episode, the premise alone is enough for most people to know if they'll like it.

Mushishi handle it well because it have overarching theme, not plot. While there are 3 key episodes that add much to Ginko's character development, it just like added bonus among other 23 unrelated episodes. I think the only kind of episodic anime that can work without overarching plot, theme, or character development is comedy anime, and even then they really need good jokes to pull themselves through.

If a show handles character well, which Mushishi does do, even if the characters change episode to episode, you can get by without a strong over-arching plot. There are plenty of slice of life shows that succeed without much of any plot. Space Dandy's problem is that the characters reset after every episode, so you're only left with strong individual episodes that have good use of character or humor, but without any sense of progression. And Space Dandy's humor isn't particularly good.
