Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

Also, here's a source for Sakurai saying that Brawl has 39 characters (This was after Brawl's launch, June 2008, years a long time before the new Smash Bros games were in development).

http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/4964/sakurai-cut-characters-from-smash-bros/

"to keep within time constraints" Moon from Majoras Mask being cut, confirmed :-D

Seriously though, somebody already said it earlier I guess, if they just add another row of characters so we should have like 8 or 9 more than in brawl (one slot random one slot for Mii?)

My reasons for doubting Shulk is that he doesn't seem to be the main playable character in X. I don't think one game is enough for him to be "worthy" of Smash Bros., especially not a recent one unless it sold like crazy. Then again, we know nothing about X, so it could be possible that he plays a big role in that game too.

That has absolutely no barring on if shulk is included or not, hell even with that, he was teased in the first trailer of X. this isnt a pokemon character where gamefreak/pokemon company tells sakurai to add a flavor of the week character.

Did we talk about how the game is gonna let us customize move sets, yet? Cause that is big.

I have literally imagined this in the past, like years ago, this was a idea in my head, and sakurai almost got it exactly how I thought about it if he added custom moves.

There was a thread recently about whether or not it could fly in the competitive meta gaming.

Seeing how the customization seems to be only for Special Moves and that it seems to completely change their properties rather than upgrade them (i.e Mario's fireball having no hitstun and behaving more like Fox's Blaster) it should be really interesting to see.

Way too zoomed out. The select screens usually merely show the face.

Same here. Sakurai is all seeing, apparently. It doesn't just stop there. Having FD versions of most of the stages was something I was thinking of doing for Project M.

Seems kinda small considering it can't be used online except when playing for friends unless I missed something.

No friends, then? I mean, we just came off a title that barely has online to speak of. Unless you've been playing Smash Bros. by yourself all these years, that should be fine. :P

It's hard to talk about it since we don't know its range... Can standard attacks be altered too or just special ones? And how is the variation handled? Does the player just chose from presets, or are there slides and multiple options? Would it be possible to, say, give Luigi lightning bolts rather than fireballs, referencing the original "Mario & Luigi"? There are way too many possibilities but we don't know how far that customization goes.

It's also kind of limited due to no "open" online mode featuring it.

Well, like all things we know little of we can still speculate. We've had 6 threads of speculation, so far. Nothing stopping it.

All I saw in the video was Specials. The changes seem to be drastic, in terms of how they are changed. We saw Mario with at least two different versions of his fireball. Those straight bullets, and the large one that hit multiple times. That alone speaks to the range of customization we may have. I can see Sakurai leaving the rest of the moveset, alone.

And again, how is this limited just because you can't play anonymously online with it? I'm not even thinking about that part of online since I know most of the people I'd like to play with. Most living in my same State.

It has been featured :P

That's part of the game though. It's like with Pokémon. You could have survived a hit and put in a final blow to the opponent, but the opponent manages to get a critical hit thanks to random chance and defeats you. It's part of the mechanics of the game.

I've successfully avoided many a Super Sonic.
Wow I've seen Grumpig I don't think I've ever seen Leavanny or Lilligant.

Shulk is not even close to being the worst-designed JRPG character of all time.

Oh wow, that sucks.

This talk of luck spam reminds me of this randbat when my opponent got real salty over it.

While I agree that I wouldn't go that far Shulk has the most lazy ass design in recent years for a Japanese RPG. Are you blind as a bat or have no taste? Luso had a great design as did many characters in that game. While Shulk on the other hand and 99% of that game look like bad fan fiction characters that even puts Sonic FCs to shame.

It is big. We just do not how just how extensive it is yet. Imo, it sounds crazy. lol. I remember speculating about it in the past but I never seriously thought it would become true because of the work it would require to implement that for each character. BUT then again, Namco Bandai's fighting games and their Tales series do feature larger movesets so this could be easier for them. I wonder if their only limited to specials which would be great.

My crazy theory before was that because of this customization, some "clone" characters would have to be changed or face being potentially cut since their attributes could be simply added to another character like giving Fox Falco's reflector. lol It would not be that simple to justify cutting a character though so yea just a crazy thought.

Like I said, I'm hoping this will add a whole new layer of depth to the series. Smash has always been a very customizable series and it only makes sense that the next step would be to do so with the character abilities.

I'm not too mad about not being able to incorporate this online. Think about it. How would you play some random person that you don't know, with a modified moveset that they won't be aware of until they actually start fighting?

Slightly annoyed me that GameXplain credited Project M for inspiring custom move sets when the few moves demonstrated looked more like Brawl Minus material. Really should just credit the Smash homebrew scene as a whole because there was a lot of work done before Project M was a thing.

What if it's not inspired by anyone?

I second your thought, Xeno series still need a few more games on Nintendo platforms to become a well-known Nintendo owned franchise. Shulk can join 6th/7th Smash as a xeno-character like Marth as a FE-character.

so... i have been reading a lot of post of people that were happy about this game changing a lot of things from brawl but... why are they saying that!?

We dont know that much about the gameplay/mechanics of the game, right?? Sakurai hasnt clearly said/show how things are going to work. We have more and more characters/stages/items... but we still dont know how the game is going to be played, i think. We know that theres no tripping, that the "speed" is supposed to be between brawl and melee, we just have some lines of a miiverse comment about the changes of the "ledge game", etc...

Basically, we have to guess from the footage that we have how the game is going to be played (and that footage are just a lot of videos that are some seconds long, because we still dont have something like a whole match). And watching that footage doesnt help much: we dont know basic things like if you can air dodge out of hitsun, the air dodge seems to be the same as brawl ( :| ), it can still be said that the game seems "floaty"??, i would say that its a save bet to say that L-canceling and wavedashing are not coming back (i have to guess because sakurai doesnt help), the only way of clearly seeing the changes of the "ledge game" would be sakurai showing it... Why should i believe that things are changing if i cant see it (because you dont want to show it to me)??

The game is releasing in summer, stop giving me more characters and tell/show me how the game is going to play, please ;P

PS: WHERES RIDLEY!? If theres still hope for ridley, banjo too.

I won't say I like Shulk's design that much - it's too visually busy, look at all those damn round things and lines everywhere - but to look at that picture of Luso and go 'That's a great design!' is madness. I mean, if Shulk is visually busy, Luso is fuckin' exhausted.

Here's Shulkie for comparison.

Btw, the new Final Destination looks like the stage is orbiting around two twin suns (yellow and blue) :O

Also, too. The menu interface looks identical to Brawl. Not happy about that either. :/

Well yes, I would assume this idea wasn't inspired by the Brawl homebrew scene at all and Sakurai may have had this idea for ages.

I just feel that GameXplain should at least acknowledge that there is more to the scene than Project M.

Rewatching the Smash Direct, I think the fact that the Ridley shadow stays in place for a short time and then moves is hinting at him being playable - I haven't seen any Assist Trophy/stage hazard that would move as jerkily (not the right term but I can't think of a better way to describe the motion of a character moving from a still position timed with moving the control stick) as the shadow did in the Direct.

i thought the same but... can a playable character fly!?

Same with Kid Icarus. Sakurai seems to really like that design for menus. I'd prefer more variety as well.

A friend recently told me that it's because Sakurai and his wife design the menu layouts together, and that they got married around the time of Brawl's release. I have no idea if this is true or not, though. Can someone confirm?

Back at E3 last year, Sakurai said that there would be connectivity between the 3DS and Wii U versions, and you'd be able to transfer "character customizations" from the 3DS version to the Wii U version. He didn't specify what they were, though. Seems to me like the customized move sets are what he was talking about back then. Which means you'll need the 3DS version to use them...

What if Ridley is a playable boss character? Like you fight over something on Pyroshpere and whoever "claims" it, gets to play as him for a short period of time.

That way he's still playable and still gets to be huge. As a result nobody is happy, except Sakurai.

You mean similar to the Yellow Devil? That's not a bad theory.

Edit: Also, looks like the Skull Kid Assist Trophy works like Palkia does in flipping the stage upside down, but I think you have to fight with reversed controls instead of dropping to the floor (which was the ceiling).

That was it, but it was enough to see that they're going for the same general aesthetic. The music selection screen looked pretty much identical.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're just placeholder mockups. But I also wouldn't be surprised if the style is the same. (It probably will be, considering that's how Icarus looked as well)

I have people to play with just meant that limiting the modes of where custom movesets are seems like an odd idea. Especially in the case of For Fun mode. I can understand keeping the same moves across the board For Glory.

I actually like that it's not possible to use it in online battles with random people. It would probably be kind of annoying.
It's certainly a fun element but I guess more for experimenting and stuff.
Not really for me tbh. It's probably gonna be fun to "unlock" all the customizations though (:
I love unlockables

looks awesome!

He should work at Chotchkies

I don't think any Namco characters are going to make it in. Pacman would be a joke, they would really need to make him something he isn't to turn him into a fighter.. BUT... they were creative with Wii Fit Trainer and Villager.

Well, we already have a Namco assist trophy and a Namco item, so it seems like a Namco character would be the next step?

Even though Olimars Final Smash has probably something to do with the stone Pikmin, I still hope it's gonna be Bulborbs.
Whiptongue Bulborbs would be fun xD

He was only shown for a short while, so theoretically it could simply be multiple jumps. Maybe even just using that jetpack item that we saw in the direct.

after seeing little mac movement in the air when using it, i would say that ridley wanst using it 100%. Also, it should appear on ridleys shadow. And even more important, ridley needing a jetplack for flying... that is sad for ridley :P
