Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

Has Greninja's popularity been a pretty obvious fact within the pokemon community btw?

I've considered predicting a gen 6 rep for a potential newcomer, but nothing stood out to me in particular from a game role perspective.

Yes. Greninja is very common online. Most other standouts wouldn't work well for smash. I mean, Aegislash is awesome and all but...

He's comparable to Blaziken from the 3rd gen really. Most popular pick and useful competitively to boot.

Final destination all maps

"Oh you want to play the game like street fighter? Here's street fighter FD all maps" D1 kills me

Probably because they're both unlockable. We have seen Toon Link as well.
Oh right.

Well, it's probably one of the most popular pokemon of XY and obviously it works as a fighter. It isn't like Charizard, Mewtwo or Lucario but still it's popular.

On the topic of starter Pokémon:

Seeing as we don't have a Grass Pokémon representative yet (assuming Greninja replaced Squirtle and Ivysaur is gone), I wanted to make a case for Grovyle, specifically the version from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.

RUZ1TmY.png

Although Grovyle isn't really anything special in the main series of Pokémon (other than being one of the few middle-stage Pokémon that looks better than its final stage IMO), a particular Grovyle is a major character in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers games. Mystery Dungeon is a franchise of roguelikes made by Chunsoft that occasionally does spinoffs of better-known series (for example, there's a Dragon Quest 8 spinoff as well), but other than the Pokémon ones they haven't really been successful in the west.

Although the games are roguelikes, they also have a decent story - in fact, most people agree that Explorers has a much better story than most other Pokémon games. The Mystery Dungeon games have some nice settings and great music (the problem with them is that the gameplay isn't really that interesting), so I'd like to see some acknowledgement of them in Smash. There's no way we're getting a full character like this, but I can dream :)

EDIT: Added spoilers. Summary of PMD: Explorers plot below (I left it vague enough as to not spoil everything - Bulbapedia has the rest)

In PMD: Explorers, Grovyle is a notorious thief that's stealing ancient artifacts known as the Time Gears. Each Time Gear controls the flow of time in the surrounding area; taking the Time Gear causes time to stop there (though this doesn't seem to affect Pokémon). As more and more Time Gears are stolen, the world looks like it's headed towards disaster, called the Planet's Paralysis in-game.

After Grovyle is captured, an unexpected turn of events causes the player and their partner to go on the run with Grovyle - after they learn that Grovyle isn't such a bad guy after all, they team up to find the Hidden Land, home to the Temporal Tower and Dialga, the legendary Pokémon that controls time. Grovyle is revealed to be a Pokémon from the doomed future; the act of stopping the Planet's Paralysis will erase that future and cause Grovyle to disappear. Despite this, Grovyle helps push the party onwards, hoping that Dialga can be reached before the Planet's Paralysis drives it insane. However, the party is ambushed by one of the future Dialga's agents, who wants to ensure the Planet's Paralysis happens. Grovyle sacrifices himself to allow the player to continue.

Neutral Special: Time Gear
S5GaLjx.png

The artifacts Grovyle is stealing, and his moveset's main gimmick. In the original game, taking a Time Gear would begin to freeze time in the nearby area.
A move that requires charging (charging can be suspended as with other charge moves). Grovyle pulls out a Time Gear and starts to spin it up.
When B is released, slows all enemies within range (like a localised stopwatch). The intensity of the slowness depends on the charge level. No damage/knockback; just a slowing effect.
Side Special: Aerial Ace
A move Grovyle can learn by TM, based on a double-striking sword technique.
Grovyle leaps left/right, slashing through the enemy (like Fox's side special), then makes a second backwards slash, hitting the enemy downwards (if used on a horizontal surface, deposits the enemy into Leaf Blade's sweet spot). Medium damage, second hit is a meteor smash
Down Special: Vacuum Cut
One of two moves exclusive to the Mystery Dungeon spinoffs; in those games, it hits all enemies in the room.
Grovyle launches weakly-damaging gusts of wind to his left and right that pull enemies towards it, into the range of the Time Gear's slowing effect. Low damage, negative knockback.
Up Special: Leaf Storm
The final move Grovyle learns by leveling up; the name is pretty self-explanatory.
If used in the air, sends a flurry of leaves downwards, propelling Grovyle up and hitting any enemies in its path downwards. If used on the ground, the leaves swirl around Grovyle instead, trapping enemies inside; useful for damaging enemies slowed by the Time Gear. Low damage, medium knockback when used in the air.

Side Smash: Leaf Blade
Grovyle's signature move; it has a higher-than-usual critical hit rate.
The leaves on Grovyle's wrist extend, and he lashes out to the side. High damage/knockback if it sweet spots, weak otherwise - the Time Gear's slowing effect combined with Aerial Ace lets you set this up a bit easier.
Up Smash: Brick Break
A move Grovyle learns by TM.
Grovyle strikes upwards, launching any enemies he hits into the air. Medium damage/knockback.
Down Smash: Low Kick
A move Grovyle learns by move tutor in HeartGold/SoulSilver/Black 2/White 2.
Grovyle sweeps round in a circle, hitting nearby enemies away to the side. Medium damage/knockback.

Side throw has Grovyle follow up by throwing a Silver Spike at the enemy.

Final Smash: Planet's Paralysis
This occured in the future of the Mystery Dungeon world after Grovyle stole all the Time Gears; time stopped for every non-living thing, leaving the world a cold barren wasteland.
The stage background turns greyscale and stops animating. All enemies are slowed, and cannot input commands while on the ground, allowing Grovyle to pick them off with Leaf Blade.

Stage: Hidden Land
ZQxjplY.png
SerfuBi.png

A legendary floating landmass lost in the Sea of Time. The crumbling Temporal Tower is suspended above it. The stage is caught in a time loop, with the tower repeatedly falling and reforming.
The stage starts in the forest of the Hidden Land. After some time, the Rainbow Stoneship appears and takes the fighters to the top of the Temporal Tower. After a while, Primal Dialga appears as the stage boss, using Roar of Time (like Dialga on Spear Pillar in Brawl). Temporal Tower starts crumbling, and the fighters ride pieces of it back to the Hidden Land.

Music:
Mix of Temporal Spire + Time Gear theme + Dialga's Fight to the Finish + Don't Ever Forget
A more upbeat arrangement of Temporal Tower
Mix of Explorers of Sky Main Theme + Town Square + Treasure Town
Mix of Sky Tower + Vs. Rayquaza to represent the first PMD games
Probably something from the 3DS game? Haven't played it, so I can't make any suggestions.

TL;DR: I just want this song in Smash somehow ;)

Has Gamefreak actually pushed it as a mascot of sorts though?

Considering the Pokémon Company are probably the ones responsible for choosing Pokémon reps it seems like that's eventually going to be the case.

Right now all that's there is that Ash's first Pokemon in the X&Y series is also a Froakie, which will probably turn into a Greninja eventually.

I've seen some people outright say there was barely any news at all in the direct.

I don't even understand how someone could've watched the same thing I did and come to that conclusion.

To be honest I thought it was too long. I could have done without a run down of the old characters.

For the most part I'd call that statement crazy, but it did get a little annoying when he used footage taken directly from previous Directs and explained them for Rosalina/Mac.

Oh right.

It's as or more ubiquitous than charizard online. Charizard, Mewtwo, and Lucario have had years and multiple games, anime episodes, and movies to build that popularity. Gen VI just started.

It's like Charizard. First they make the game. Everyone picks Greninja as the best/coolest starter, then the marketing comes after the players choose.

Though it helps that unlike Charizard, Greninja is actually competitively viable, and pretty good to boot.

I was lurking on Smashboards and saw that someone did not know who Mega Man was before his Smash announcement, among other things. I actually started laughing out loud. What the hell do younger gamers these days play? Even if you just browse the net you are bound to run into him, like with the fiasco with MvC3, the cancellation of the games, the rage at Capcom and all that.

That boards seems pretty crazy honestly. It's like a board that brings in fans of the franchises in Smash and not really Smash itself.

Mega Evolutions like Mewtwo XY, Charizard X, Blaziken, Lucario are promoted much more than Greninja. I agree that Gen VI just started but I can't see it being as popular as Charizard. But oh well, Greninja's inclusion in Smash is a big thing for it.

Mega Charizard is viable. If you go to Smogon's viability tiers, they, alongside TalonFlame and Aeglislash, are considered S tiers and the best of the best in OU.

Kinda sucks as it was fun to tell people who left pokemon that Charizard sucks

Still not the best Fire/Flying though

Not everyone's like us, man. They game casually, they don't watch the gaming news, and Smash Bros is one of those kinds of games that can attract a hugely varied crowd. It's not that surprising.

No... wait until they ask whether you can buy some kind of currency in Smash Bros for real money to progress through the game faster or some shit. That's when you can facepalm into the sun

Hmmm I kind of doubt that. That would mean Sakurai decided for Greninja some time between October 2013 and now. That would be kind of late.

Kids play a lot of Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and Minecraft. They only know what they hear through word of mouth or TV.

Well, not a school girl, but you don't need to look for fan art. Maid Akuma is official, thanks to Demitri in Capcom Fighting Jam.

They even released a figurine.

Capcom said they were going to raffirm this stance in the fighting game scene this year.

I meant compared to Charizard prior to Gen VI where he wasn't common at all except on an obvious in-game team. Charizard had to earn that through popularity, Greninja got acceptance out of the gate.

Though I was really surprised to see that both Megas for Charizard were considered good a while back, I figured Y would have gone the way of Moltres.

It's entirely possible GameFreak did focus testing before X/Y's release and found that Greninja resonated the most with their target audience.

Drought is just that good.

I would rather have Grovyle/Sceptile than Mewtwo in Smash, tbh. I don't like Mewtwo's design and legendary Pokémon are boring.

Now that I think about it, I'm really going to be bummed out that Squirtle isn't in it. He was really fast and fun to use. Don't get me wrong, I love that Greninja is in, and I might main him, but Squirtle was just awesome. Also I'm going to miss the days of having a 4-player match with Squritle, Kirby, Yoshi and Jiggly and seeing them altogether at the post-match screen all clapping and thinking "hurray guys" , "good job everyone" , "the most important thing is we had fun"

Well, I doubt they'll make a Pokemon character based on a spin-off, but your post has certainly gauged my interest in playing PMD: Explorers.
I'd be happy with a few references (like how Peach's side smash references the Mario spinoffs). The games have a crapton of content (still working my way through the post-game story that ties up the loose ends of the plot), but as I said, the dungeon crawling gets repetitive after a while - definitely a game to take on a little at a time. Try and get Sky if possible, since it's the 'GOTY' version (notably adds the optional 'special episodes' that expand on some of the characters' backstories).
Eh, his inclusion would spell the end of Mewtwo's chances, since Slot #6 would be reserved for Jigglypuff. I stand by how I think the Pokémon representation will go down.

Pikachu
Jigglypuff
Mewtwo
Charizard
Lucario
Greninja
I hope Mewtwo gets in too... The Greninja reveal was a cruel tease. This roster is much more realistic than Grovyle anyway.
Im glad this was posted, I really hope Grovyle gets in. You may wan to spoiler some of the later stuff in case anyone decides to go and play the game
Done. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is underrated IMO; glad I'm not alone :)
Cant believe you didnt suggest Through The Sea of Time or I Dint Want to Say Goodbye as songs
The Time Gear theme already has plenty of representation in the medley and Temporal Tower, and those two seem too short to use as standalone songs. Mix them into the ginormous Time Gear medley or a third medley or something. But yeah, those were also great.

smogonsword is next after bravest bird

Suddenly I am laughing at the idea of a character called "XY Trainer" but uses Greninja, Aegislash and Talonflame with common OU moves

So does this also mean we'll be getting Mega Kangaskhan shortly? :P
MegaMom is banned tho :(
