Final Fantasy VII Rebirth confirmed for Switch 2 and Xbox Series, Part 3 will be multiplatform as well

After Rebirth failed to meet Square's financial expectations by releasing it as a PlayStation exclusive, this is the right decision. I have no doubt that the final installment will sell at least twice as much as Rebirth at launch.

Very unlikely. Main reason is that because it's a continuation of the story... you're probably only looking at people who have played & completed the first two that would be interested in the third.

From a development standpoint... if they stuck with the existing engine, the dev time shouldn't be that bad. A large portion of the remaining story takes place in areas already covered in the first two games. They could potentially reuse a lot.

I am intrigued if they will actually try selling a Triple Pack bundle.

Weird they didn't announce this in the Direct. Would have helped soften the blow of FFVIIRI getting a (small) delay.

If and when we start seeing pubs like SEGA/Atlus, Capcom or especially Western pubs like EA and Take 2 increasing their Switch 2 output, I think that's when we can say 3P support is well & truly building steam (and ahead of what the Switch got).

Capcom's next major release (RE9) is arriving day one on the Switch 2. I think that's just about as strong a signal as they could have given about their future plans for the system. Agree that the other devs you listed are more ambiguous and are currently still in late port mode.

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

TBF, Square-Enix were very consistent with the original Switch, so this isn't surprising.

Capcom is making Monster Hunter Stories 3 and porting RE9 same day so I would say we are good with Capcom. Sega has been supporting Switch 2 this entire time, with Yakuza 0, Sonic x Shadow generations, working on a Switch 2 edition for Sonic All-star racing and we just saw they are bringing over Virtual Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. I'd say we're good on Sega. Besides Ubisoft and CDPR, can't say I'm seeing a lot from western publishers yet.

I believe this follows a phenomenon similar to what we see with TV shows, where later episodes often get higher ratings than the middle ones, or with movie sequels, where box office grosses tend to surpass their predecessors (for example, Star Wars Episode III earning more than Episode II).

This game will benefit from the installed base of PC, Switch 2, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 (which will be larger than it was when Rebirth launched).

I believe this because it represents the climax of the trilogy and will release into a bigger installed base.

It would also be a nice morale boost for Square. Otherwise, they might reconsider splitting a remake into three parts again.

ye part 3 has expanded wutai to do, The northern crater, the return to Junon, the lifestream, Rocket Town, the return to Midgar, and then the Northern cave for the finale. it's a lot.

I think they're gonna fast track some of it. After spending the entire first game in Midgar, Rebirth did cover a lot of ground and took the game up to the ending of disc 1.

The third game will be reusing a lot of the art assets from Rebirth and other than Wutai, Icicle Inn and Rocket Town, I don't really remember any other new big key location that is left.

I don't think we're revisiting anything more than a tiny, enclosed, segment of Midgar for Part 3.

Oh this is def a one time thing. I have no doubt Square will remaster 8-15 (again) but I have to think it'll be low budget remasters only and not anything near what they did with FF7.

Is that certain? I hope it is but I don't see that specifically mentioned. For all we know Sony does have a deal in place for timed exclusivity.

Prety much.

"will be expanding to major platforms moving forward"

Eh Sega could've been better. You don't get all the Yakuza games, or the most recent ones (Ishin, Pirate Yakuza, the Man Who Erased his name) but only 0, and then Kiwami 2 in November. And you don't get Metaphor but Persona 3 Reload

NateTheHate said the remaining 2 parts would come to the Switch by the end of 2026.

He said Rebirth would come to Switch and Xbox in 2026.

Part 3 doesn't have a release date or even announcement yet. I doubt it comes out this year. *this= 2026.

Making this game a trilogy was so stupid. This is the same level of stretching we saw with The Hobbit, tiny book -> 3 full movies.

Making the entire first game take place in Midgar was such a weird design choice.

They had to set it in a single place but they also had to justify the full price so it felt like a game padded to shit with nonsensical stuff.

Rebirth, or at least its first act, were a lot better about it. Though it got into the same repetition over its course.

Hum...you guys really underestimate what a multiplatform launch can do for a game. So you think part 3 will sell over 6 million on release? Good luck.

Sega already has loads of Switch 2 games for 2025 so I think it makes sense to spread them out. Especially if they are doing Yakuza in chronological order.

Great, Square Enix suffered a lot because of those exclusivity deals. I'm currently playing FF16 and loving a lot, amazing game so far and the story is one of the best in gaming ever to me, but I'm afraid that SE gets the wrong message because of it being PS exclusive and thus not selling as it could if it was on PC day one.

How far along are you?

EA support has been surprisingly good so far too -- Split Fiction, Madden, FC, Plants vs. Zombies

FYI, they already added the feature to make cut-scenes go at 1.5x or 2x earlier in the year to FFVII: Intergrade.

And now they're adding in-game cheats.

I dig that.

The single best improvement they should add and it would literally fix the game for me is removing at least 90% of unnecessary walking and slowing down, I played the Yuffy chapter recently to test Linux gaming but before that, I played a chapter from base game to see how it ran and remembered why I wouldn't play this game again EVER, then Yuffy chapter didn't have do that and it felt so much better and immersive
