Six new games this week, with 3 of the 4 GOG releases from week 14 of 2014 being on the list, and the 4th potentially also making the list down the road as well. Some weeks GOG's releases are sorta ho-hum, and others they knock it out of the park, this is one of the weeks where they did really well!
First we'll get RollerCoaster Tycoon series out of the way, all three entries make the list, all for their own reasons. While any one particular game will probably be more than enough for someone, they all have their strengths and weaknesses, and all provide countless hours of enjoyment. RCT1 is the original, so it gets points for that, is a little less complex than the others, and has a campaign to play through. RCT2 is really like an expansion to RCT1, lots more things to do, but no real campaign to unlock as you play like in RCT1. 2 also has a bunch of custom content you can download, and is generally loved as much as the first for being a game very much in the same vein. RCT3 brings us to the first real facelift, a 3D engine (which often clashed with fans of RCT1/2), and a huge amount of custom content, way more than RCT2. Campaigns are back, and the game is the most detailed yet. Very rewarding for those who invest in to learning the complex mechanics, and it brings a lot more new features to the game than RCT2. So all three come pretty highly recommended.
Then this week's releases, starting with Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe. I admit I didn't really think much of this one at first glance, but upon reading more about it, and realizing Adult Swim = quality games usually, I'm not too surprised to see the comments about it being a very fun action game with a little spin to it, good for playing in shorter sessions.
Risen brings us a solid open world WRPG for fans of that genre, but not for wimps who like things scaled to their ability. Risen makes no reservations about killing you if you give it the chance, and I probably died 100 times in the game. Just like Gothic, the enemies are vicious, but exploitable with some knowledge and improved skills (from leveling). But the standout aspect to it is really the handcrafted world, with a focus on exploration. Really quite a different feel from your open world Elder Scrolls game, but both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Finally, Broken Age wraps up the recommended game updates. I'm holding off til both halves are finished myself, but it is by no means necessary, since people say they end the first half at a perfectly logical place, and there's no reason not to play it now. While the game doesn't have flawless impressions, mainly the weakpoints of puzzles and interactivity which I've highlighted in the quotes, the visual style and animation are both top-notch, along with the VA and music, so chances are it will still manage to impress even if you don't need to click everything in your inventory on every object in the game to solve the puzzles.
As for games that didn't make the cut, all we have is Age of Wonders 3. Which is not to say it doesn't qualify/isn't a good game, it's just a matter of not having enough impressions yet. I feel when I revisit it in another 2 weeks, it will make the cut... not an uncommon issue for recently released games like AoW3 to have. Sometimes two or three days is not enough to get enough impressions on a game lol.
Oh, and a relatively minor thing, but I added a searchable alphabetical index to the bottom of the recommended games list. This way you can easily see if a game is not on the list yet, without having to search through all the images. Plus you can also use text searches on the page as well.
