Presto have announced that The Journeyman Project : Pegasus Prime will [finally] be coming to GOG on the 10th.

Day one for me, I've been holding back on playing 2 & 3 until I could finally play the all-singing all-dancing version of the original

Yea really happy to see that series will be completed. I love the 2nd and 3rd games.

Cool beans. I was wondering where the first game had been...

The last series discount I got for Tomb Raider was something like 32% off for the last game I did not own. I am pretty sure I saw it once at 60% off but I think they must change them every now and then?

Night Dive have been counting down to *something* over the past few days. As I said a few days ago, I was wondering if a recent photo from them pointed to Bad Mojo, but I don't really see the association given what's followed:

The choice of words on FB is intriguing.

Tomorrow is reaping day!

Now, there's one obvious association with reaping, but if it was Grim Fandango, I imagine we'd have heard some mutterings from other quarters. I've seen someone suggest Harvester on Steam, but that doesn't strike me as something that merits a countdown. Given previous hints, Bad Mojo certainly seems plausible, but 'reaping' seems an odd choice of words for it.

Either way... I'm very intrigued.

They have been teasing something with cockroaches for a while. Even that gift card they received from GOG had a roach on the computer screen in the background.

Huh... both the regular and deluxe editions of Age of Wonders III are at the top of the GOG charts. Hopefully, the game's proving successful enough that GOG will be able to nab more newer titles.

Also, I'm really glad I decided to spring for the deluxe edition, because that soundtrack is phenomenal.

May not have merited one, but it received one!

but yeah, pretty unimpressive given that gog netted this a few weeks back

Has anyone had any luck with the GOG version of Interstate 76? I've never been able to get it working to a satisfactory level. GOG support has been really disappointing.

Some have, some haven't... I have it mentioned in the warning to the game in the recommended list, that compatibility with it is a bit iffy. I take it you messed around with using nGlide or dgVoodoo whatever it is to run it? Re-downloaded the lastest .exe from GOG, etc. There's quite a few threads in their forums about various things to try, but it is one of the fewer GOG games where ymmv on it.

Yeah I've tried the launchers with no success, normally I get a glide error. I'll give the new download a go.

I get the feeling this is one of those games GOG should either fix or pull from the store. Support said I get no help if I'm not running XP or Vista which seems like a bit of a cop out.

Six new games this week, with 3 of the 4 GOG releases from week 14 of 2014 being on the list, and the 4th potentially also making the list down the road as well. Some weeks GOG's releases are sorta ho-hum, and others they knock it out of the park, this is one of the weeks where they did really well!

First we'll get RollerCoaster Tycoon series out of the way, all three entries make the list, all for their own reasons. While any one particular game will probably be more than enough for someone, they all have their strengths and weaknesses, and all provide countless hours of enjoyment. RCT1 is the original, so it gets points for that, is a little less complex than the others, and has a campaign to play through. RCT2 is really like an expansion to RCT1, lots more things to do, but no real campaign to unlock as you play like in RCT1. 2 also has a bunch of custom content you can download, and is generally loved as much as the first for being a game very much in the same vein. RCT3 brings us to the first real facelift, a 3D engine (which often clashed with fans of RCT1/2), and a huge amount of custom content, way more than RCT2. Campaigns are back, and the game is the most detailed yet. Very rewarding for those who invest in to learning the complex mechanics, and it brings a lot more new features to the game than RCT2. So all three come pretty highly recommended.

Then this week's releases, starting with Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe. I admit I didn't really think much of this one at first glance, but upon reading more about it, and realizing Adult Swim = quality games usually, I'm not too surprised to see the comments about it being a very fun action game with a little spin to it, good for playing in shorter sessions.

Risen brings us a solid open world WRPG for fans of that genre, but not for wimps who like things scaled to their ability. Risen makes no reservations about killing you if you give it the chance, and I probably died 100 times in the game. Just like Gothic, the enemies are vicious, but exploitable with some knowledge and improved skills (from leveling). But the standout aspect to it is really the handcrafted world, with a focus on exploration. Really quite a different feel from your open world Elder Scrolls game, but both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Finally, Broken Age wraps up the recommended game updates. I'm holding off til both halves are finished myself, but it is by no means necessary, since people say they end the first half at a perfectly logical place, and there's no reason not to play it now. While the game doesn't have flawless impressions, mainly the weakpoints of puzzles and interactivity which I've highlighted in the quotes, the visual style and animation are both top-notch, along with the VA and music, so chances are it will still manage to impress even if you don't need to click everything in your inventory on every object in the game to solve the puzzles.

As for games that didn't make the cut, all we have is Age of Wonders 3. Which is not to say it doesn't qualify/isn't a good game, it's just a matter of not having enough impressions yet. I feel when I revisit it in another 2 weeks, it will make the cut... not an uncommon issue for recently released games like AoW3 to have. Sometimes two or three days is not enough to get enough impressions on a game lol.

Oh, and a relatively minor thing, but I added a searchable alphabetical index to the bottom of the recommended games list. This way you can easily see if a game is not on the list yet, without having to search through all the images. Plus you can also use text searches on the page as well.

Are you guys trying to finish all your GOG games? Personally, I jsut see GOG as a tool to collect all the classic good old games. It's only Fahrenheit, Dreamfall, The Longest Journey, Beyond Good & Evil and Riddick I might finish sometime.

While I do collect some old games, I mostly stick to games I think I would play again some time.
And I have been playing many of the games I'm buying, mostly the games from the Settlers series. At the moment I'm playing through Rune with a friend (found a COOP mod).

I'm mostly repurchasing games I have on CD or even floppy disk. I don't want to have to scrounge abandonware sites if I ever want to play some of this stuff. Sadly, I don't think I've fired up a GOG game in the past two years. lol

Of course, you still have things like NOLF which will forever be lost unfortunately.

Most of the games I have on GOG will take dozens of hours to finish, and Im not able to do that.

I guess I will try to finish Beyond Good & Evil when the sequel is officially announced, Dreamfall and The Longest Journey when Dreamfall Chapters is close to release, Riddick and Fahrenheit during the summer this year.

I only buy GOG games for collection sake, the ones that are not on Steam and the ones that are seen as classics.

I imagine it depends on the person... people who buy new releases on GOG are probably playing them... it wouldn't make sense to buy Broken Age or a recently released indie game like Octodad or Jazzpunk from GOG just for your collection, especially when they're like 4 hours long. Likewise, someone who missed out on a game like Planescape Torment or Heroes of Might and Magic 3 would probably play it as well. Someone who played the games and just wanted to boot them up again someday may or may not.

I've played quite a few of my purchases, some to completion, others not. Sometimes I do just buy them to have simpler access to the games than huge boxes.

Looking at their forums you'll see there are lots of people playing the older games they buy, and newer ones. Stuff like FTL definitely gets played, especially as it gets new updates with added content. Even in this thread, people will leave impressions of GOG purchases of older and newer games they've played from time to time.

Most of these games I just don't have at all or would have to hack open old Windows OSes and my last remaining family PC to play. I have Baldur's Gate 2 somewhere in my collection on CD, though!?

I only buy games I think I would at least want to try once. I only play games I feel like playing in this exact moment. If I don't feel like playing any of the games I own I wont play them, no matter what I payed for them.

Some games from GOG I've bought a second time because my CD's are packed away elsewere. And becase the GOG version has been patched and fixed so I don't have to look all over the internet for them.

The two bolded statements describe me. I think I own just about every strategy (Real Time + Turn based), god game (like dungeon keeper), and RPG (if you put RPG in it - I probably bought it). Even if you were to remove the games I've played and beaten like the Infinity Engine games (which I only bought to collect because they are classics), I would still have hundreds of hours of gameplay.

The vast backlog doesn't really bother me though. I simply view it as a library and play whatever I'm in the mood for. I'm not even worried about the money I've spent on the collection since I've been using GOG since the beginning and games were bought during the various sales. I think it was during an Interplay or RPG sale when I decided to just go ahead and buy all of the Infinity Engine games despite already beating them since they were just so cheap.

Enigmatic Hint update: Apparently the key to the Risen thing was because in Risen your core quest is to collect five crystal discs. Hence the five CDs under the sofa cushion.

This week's seems to point very clearly at Journeyman Project: Pegasus Prime. Don't know if that's due today, though. We'll find out in a couple of minutes, I guess.

Edit: Nope, unless there's a second release to come!

Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians. $10 normally, launch $3.99.

Journeyman comes out on gog on the 10th.

Nice to see the Journeyman trilogy up now... Risen 2 showing up very quickly as well. Should be interesting to see if impressions of Risen 2 have changed that much since I last read them (that it was a pretty huge let down from Risen 1).

I'm just glad that the Risen series is out of the way, so we can hopefully get something interesting out of Deep Silver.

Which is to say, the Metro series.

Still, it bodes well that they were willing to bring a game as new as Risen 2 onto GOG right out of the gate like that.

I wonder if we might see the Saint's Row titles.

I think I heard someone say the GOG version of Beyond Good & Evil was better than the steam version. Any truth to this? Does it play well with Windows 8.1 which I'm sadly stuck with.

I've been meaning to finish it ever since a game-stopping bug left me stuck in a room unable to proceed in the shitty OG cd version of the terrible PC port.

I finished the GOG version, even made a thread.

Collected everything, no bugs found, on Windows 8.1.

Be warned the game does not have Gamepad support and no multi tasking support (meaning ALT+TAB or CTRL+ESC won't make you return to desktop).

No loading times on GOG version.

I assume you are replying to my post?

That is good to hear. Maybe it was your thread which put that idea in my mind.

Any idea whats wrong with the steam version?

Also I suppose xpadder or something similar would work, no?

man, i really want to dive into Gabriel Knight 1 but that compressed audio is killinggg meee

Simple solution to this is to use crappy speakers. Audiophile quality is great and all, but there are times when a $20 pair of speakers sounds better than a $20,000 pair.

I bought Risk of Rain from the sale yesterday for $4. I think that was $4 well spent. It's just pure, unpretentious fun. And, it's one of the few games that has good pixel art that isn't trying desperately to imitate old games.

so that's cool.

As for new releases, I think the game I want the most is still the Ys series. Yeah, I know it's on Steam, but whatever. I want it without DRM, and it's been unofficially confirmed by XSEED. Just gotta keep waiting, I guess.

I picked that game up as well but I have not played it yet.

I am also waiting for the Ys games, I should send them a email about it.

sigh... either that or wait for the remake i guess

Friday release... kinda.

Omerta: City of Gangsters: Gold Edition ($12, normally $30)

Yeah, so the game that caused a bit of a stir as it brought paid DLC to GoG for what - if memory serves - was the first time at the time... now has a gold edition with all DLC included

I have no idea quite how all the bundles and packages fit together any more, but I assume this is equivalent to the content of the "4 DLC edition" plus the content of "The Japanese Incentive"

That launch discount is actually part of the weekend promo, too; 60% off Atari and Kalypso games, including both the new Omerta and the original piecemeal copies. But much more excitingly to me, there's also 60% off:

Master of Magic
Chronicles of Riddick
Alone in the Dark series
Tropico series
Blood series
Rollercoaster Tycoon series

(Plus a few others!)

That's pretty weird. So they bundled DLC #1-4 in to the base product (these used to be separate purchases), and then added this new DLC/expansion as a 5th item to the base product as a new DLC, and now are selling this Gold Version as a seperate product, which is basically the same as the original version + a single DLC now.

Also, from reading the the release discussion on GOG, the game's main campaign was broken by some horrible bug on the Mac version, which is introduced in v1.06 (required for the new DLC, but breaks the game, while 1.04 worked fine, but isn't compatible with the new DLC). Somehow there's also versions 1.07 and 1.08 (the upcoming fixed version that the gold edition uses?), which no clear response as to when the original game will be fixed for Mac users. And v1.04 (the last good version) isn't available to download anymore, just the broken version.

Bravo Kalypso. Bravo.

Edit: Because this is essentially no more than a glorified DLC, I'm not listing it as a release for this week (my normal policy is to not list DLC items).

Hopefully Killer is Dead gets a gog.com release too, preferable alongside the Steam ver.
That is a game that is dire need of 60 FPS, V-Sync and all the other goodies a PC can offer.

The game's been listed as being published by Rising Star Games and Deep Silver (similar to the situation with Deadly Premonition). In either case, it seems extremely likely that we'll see the game on GOG on day 1.

Anyway, I think I might by Blood II from the sale. I know the game gets a lot of flak, primarily from Blood 1 fans, but I remember really enjoying the game for what it was... which is a pretty damn tough FPS with satisfying gunplay. I actually remember Blood II being one of the first games I bought online, back when I would deal hunt like a madman since I was a broke kid. Anyway, I managed to get Blood II and the expansion for a really good price, but the store sent me a UK version of the expansion. It worked fine and everything, but I always remember being kinda unsatisfied I didn't get the US version.

*Pushes order button*

Well, take that, store!

Get The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena people. The game is fucken awesome and you get a Enchaced Port of Escape from Butcher Bay. It's the closest you will come to a good Prison Break season 1 game.

JOURNEYMAN BEGINS

played a couple of these way back, but pretty much don't remember anything about them. I think I mix them up with stuff like rama and other adventures in my memories of them too. martian gothic maybe, some other scifi game I forgot that reminds me of archimedean dynasty. derp.

will definitely play all three now

Riddick is awesome.

The multiplayer is great as well.

Short list this week, only 3 new entries.

Startopia is definitely a strongly recommended game, in the style of Dungeon Keeper, simulation with a little humor and a lot of class. Build your own starport, all the fun of the prior Bullfrog sims, but with the most variety in gameplay. Pretty much everything about the game is good (though the campaign is short, not that that matters too much), definitely one to try.

FTL probably needs little introduction, but it got on the radar with the Advanced Edition update, and also comes strongly recommended. Choice quotes in this one too, how can you not love the second quote. While I'm not sure I 100% agree it's the best Star Trek game, the point is made, it definitely gives you that Red Shirt feeling for your entire crew. Some people want more than just the ship to ship combat, which is basically the entirety of the game though, so not everyone loves it the same, and other people dislike the RNG nature of the game too, but it's far more common to find people who've lost 50+ hours to it, and enjoyed every last valiant effort from their crew.

Lastly Luftrausers gets revisited. With the discussion over the game from the Vita release, there's enough impressions to get it listed as a recommended game. It's main drawbacks are that it is an arcadey game through and through, 1 level, random enemies, you go for as high as score as you can get. The other issue is the framerate cap of 30 fps doesn't fly with everyone, but generally people enjoy it, along with the vast arrangement of customization offered between the weapons and ships you can unlock.

Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians, which came out last year (released this past week on GOG), didn't have enough impressions to get listed, and the other releases for this week still are waiting review. Risen 2's preliminary searching has upturned a few followers, but it's overwhelmingly agreed to be much weaker than the first. Hopefully Journeyman Project has some discussion, haven't started searching for that one yet, it does look pretty interesting.

I can't speak for Pegasus Prime, but I loved the original, and it's one of the few adventures from that era that I was able to complete unaided (IIRC). Quite a lot of alternative solutions to play with (And scoring accordingly, with bonuses for going for the most peaceful solutions to problems), and the biochip idea was rather nice although I don't think it was fully-realised

I'd quite like to play PP just to reacquaint myself with the game, and maybe explore more alternatives.
