So should I try Naruto when I am sort of feeling too old?

Of course I know of the existence of Naruto. I'm registered on NeoGaf. I've watched a few episodes a couple of years back and it didn't strike me as anything different than Dragon Ball Z; a show about who's the strongest, with a lots of episodes with a lot of waiting between the fights.

Now it has come back on my radar again because I've started following what must be a 15 year old kid who posts nothing else than butts and anime. The anime gifs look cool. I'm curious, but would rather start somewhere towards the end than go back all the way to the beginning again.

And to specify my 'too old' thing from the title. I still fill 16 and there's nothing like good escapism fantasy; but I just can't be bothered to put hours into medium entertainment anymore.

(Attack on Titan scratched my itch though)

Probably not. The anime is bogged down with filler after the first 135 episodes. And the canon material adapted after that hasn't been particularly good.

If you want to watch it, then watch it.

I only got into it because it started airing on toonami... though I got about 80% of the way through filler hell before realizing that the end wasn't just around the corner.

Don't do it. I follow the manga today because I'm compelled to see how it ends (for some stupid reason). Shit gets very stupid.

You should. Follow the no filler guide though. Skip all filler.

I'm convinced everyone saying no has never even reached the retrieval arc let alone shippuden. Pain arc is in top 5 of all of anime.

Oh man, started watching the anime back in 03, after the first half finished, I picked up the manga, haven't seen much anime from the second half but dude I'm like 24 and still looking forward to the big 3 every week. Shit's got me hooked for life.

I think 95% of the general population thinks that all anime has to offer is stuff like Naruto.
There's so much better stuff out there.

Don't go down the rabbit hole. It's the craziest, deepest rabbit hole you'll ever come across. If you're at least caught halfway through the manga, then I suppose you could give it a short.

...No, I'm all the way caught up.

And again I say "don't do it."

Just search youtube for a highlight reel of fights. You can skip so much bullshit.

edit: If you want to try something new then check out Hunter X Hunter.

Pain arc has the shitty looney tunes fight of what should have been an epic emotional clash between the two central characters

3/5 people who try Naruto end up like this

Oh please.

Watch a deep anime like Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood instead OP. Sounds like it might suit you better if you dont want to waste thousands of hours with a mediocre anime that got worse with the time.

I stopped after the danzo fight. But everything is worth it just for the pain arc. I'll stand by that.

I will give you that - the Pain arc is badass.

So OP, if you can stop right after that, go ahead. If you can't *not* finish afterwards, just don't do it. Because it gets really disappointing down the line.

I'll agree with this. FMAB is 20 fold more worth while to watch.

Thanks. I won't try Naruto. I'll try Hunter X Hunter.

Edit: and my anime fix started with Berserk, with the original anima, and I've even started reading the manga. I quit the manga again because it started to get a Power Ranger feeling though. As in: kicking ass. STRONG ENEMY APPEARS. Morph into special berserk mode. Kick more ass.

I have to say the manga gets quite amazing at the moment. Its probably about to end since Kishimoto-san said so some months ago.

I know a lot of people who really enjoy it and when it's being a show about badass ninja fighting it's fucking excellence but the killer kills the show for me. I don't have the time or patience to keep up with what is or isn't filler.

It took me almost a decade to actually watch the original series (not shippuden) and it wasn't until a friend gave me a 100% legitimate non bootleg dvd set that had all that fat trimmed out. All the filler gone and i had just gotten surgery and wouldn't really be able to move around for a week so i dedicated that week to watching Naruto and other things and i enjoyed it and i also read the Manga up into some of the shippuden stuff and i really dig that and i think when Naruto is being THAT and isn't being 75 episodes of bullshit i don't care about (IE 250+ episodes of DBZ and only like 90 episodes being good). It's a shame i don't have the time now to start shippuden and catch up because as much shit as Naruto gets i think it's a really entertaining anime when you cut all the bullshit out.

I say if you are going to get into Naruto you need to google what is and isn't filler and watch it that way. I really wish they would release a "kai" version of it in america on dvd/blu-ray because i would buy that.

No just don't.

Try one piece instead.
My buddy has been trying to get me into this show for a very long time but i cannot and will not invest the time it takes to watch like 640 episodes or get a hold of all the episodes and trim down all the filler.

It's why i haven't watched Bleach or Shippuden and most likely never will.

Even the non-filler episodes can be a pain to watch at times, especially when you notice they're trying as hard as possible to overextend a plot point (flashbacks, and lots of them).

The first 135 episodes are pretty entertaining, I've watched it twice. Sure it's predictable, follows the typical shounen anime tropes, and kind of immature, but it's worth a watch.

Of shounen arcs alone I don't think it makes a top fifteen list - and that's just the narrow slice of shows I've seen.

I watched it when I was 14-15. I enjoyed it at the time, but Naruto could be a really annoying character. I preferred Bleach, which I was also watching at that point. Some bits of the show were good, and I even skipped some of the bits I knew were filler, but the show still really drags. And it drags in a really weird way, as in, you don't really see much everyday life - they somehow managing to make these huge, incredibly important events boring and long. After at least a hundred episodes (I think) they all grow up 2 years, but I stopped watching shortly after that because the show hadn't really changed very much in my eyes. I should also point out that it's really hard to stop watching one of these types of anime when it hasn't finished. It's like a soap opera or something. I felt the same way with Bleach.

Normally it's easy to say just go for it, do what you wanna do, but its harder when the thing must be over 300 episodes or something by now at least. Starting near the end isn't the same either...you would miss good bits, which annoyingly aren't the same if you haven't watched the dozens of ok episodes before that. It's so many hours. There's so many more entertaining things you could be watching or doing in my opinion. Not to offend anyone watching the show. I get why it's fun to watch. But I wouldn't consciously watch a show I knew was like it again, if that makes sense.

Yeah, there's no way to say that without offending people. I just think there's better things you could be doing. Ultimately that's up to though, and of course if you watch a bit and love it then keep watching. Maybe don't talk about watching it on the internet though, since people can be pretty mean about the show from what I've seen.

OP can you sustain perhaps the greatest amount of filler ever to grace an anime in the existence of mankind?

No, then get out, run, far away, change your name, never look back

Ugh Naruto has filler episodes with flashbacks to other filler episodes that retell the same story and actually have flashbacks within flashbacks, I shit you not

Huh? Im sure you read manga not just for the fights, as the setting, plots, and tone of the Manga is what make it so good.

Naruto was good and exiting before timeskip, after that ("Shippuden" part) it went downhill.

The manga is fucking terrible right now.

Play the CyberConnect2 game adaptations instead, which may be better than the source material itself. Or wait a decade for Naruto Kai to come out and strip out all the bullshit.

How are people going to talk shit about Naruto and then suggest Hunter X Hunter... especially when the latest arc is committing Toonami Dragon Ball Z slowness crimes.

Watch Naruto, skip the filler arcs.
