So should I try Naruto when I am sort of feeling too old?

I used to like it but it's just awful now. Tbh, I advise you to skip it. Even its great points can't save what it has become and there's much better shounen manga/anime out there.

You should. Follow the no filler guide though. Skip all filler.

I'm convinced everyone saying no has never even reached the retrieval arc let alone shippuden. Pain arc is in top 5 of all of anime.

God no.

OP, if you want to watch it, go ahead. There are much, much better shounen series though, like One Piece and Hunter x Hunter, which I see you already decided on. Very good choice.

I'm curious, but would rather start somewhere towards the end than go back all the way to the beginning again.

Well if you want to watch it in the middle then you should join us at ToonamiGAF with Shippuden (shameless plug). Even though the pacing is bad and it can get boring at times, watching it with a group of people make it loads better. We're only like a handful of episodes in so if want to catch up it won't take you too long.

I think you're old enough to make your own decisions about what media you consume.

My buddy has been trying to get me into this show for a very long time but i cannot and will not invest the time it takes to watch like 640 episodes or get a hold of all the episodes and trim down all the filler.

It's why i haven't watched Bleach or Shippuden and most likely never will.

Shame, One Piece is one hell of a ride. Better than either show you mentioned.

What makes Hunter x Hunter better than Naruto?

Huh? Im sure you read manga not just for the fights, as the setting, plots, and tone of the Manga is what make it so good.

Naruto was good and exiting before timeskip, after that ("Shippuden" part) it went downhill.

The manga started feeling as en excuse to power up that berserker suit. I mean, how many volumes are there? HAS HE FUCKING KILLED GRIFFITH YET?

How are people going to talk shit about Naruto and then suggest Hunter X Hunter... especially when the latest arc is committing Toonami Dragon Ball Z slowness crimes.

Watch Naruto, skip the filler arcs.
Because it's consistently good, both story wise and animation wise.

As someone who has watched and read it religiously for the last 10 years; it became pretty terrible after a while and stayed that way, I only keep up with the manga now because of how much time I've invested into the story so far.

Skip Naruto, watch One piece.

One piece has a bad ass

People really deny them things they'll enjoy because the think they're too old? Is this for all drawn entertainment/cartoons or just anime for some reason? It's always surprising how much people worry about some weird social stigma, especially when it's something people will never even know about.

I can see how some people are bitter at the filler episodes, but calling the show terrible? Come on. I started watching naruto in 2012 and had to catch up. I skipped all the filler and I found the show to be very engaging.

If you have the time for it, do it. Naruto has some of the best supporting characters of any anime ever. Naruto gets pretty annoying but it never gets to the point where he becomes agonizing to watch.

If you do watch... Watch it in Japanese.

Finally someone who gets it.

I watched the entire series for the first time 10 months ago and enjoyed it throughout. Just avoid filler and you're good to go.

OP. you should just give it a try yourself. Lots of people here are exaggerating or in the "it's hip to hate the popular thing" crowd.

I feel like I have a balanced opinion on the series:

Part 1 (episodes 1- 135) is pretty great. The arcs have great build up and the characters and their corresponding fights are very unique. Some of the fights (spoiler)
Rock Lee vs. Garra, Orochimaru vs. Naruto + Sasuke
still give me chills on repeat viewings. The animators assigned to these fights had a great orchestration of pacing, action and direction, truly some of my favorite battles in anime. But just watching them in isolation would diminish their impact, they would mean nothing without the build up. The chunin exam arc is where it really picked up for me, although for a first arc, the Zabuza mission holds up well. Really, when it hits it's high notes, the show fucking soars. I think a lot of people saw an episode of the funimation dub (BELIEVE IT LAWL) and filler shit and are basing their drive by "no's" on that.

Part 1 (episodes 136 - whatever the fuck filler) Shite. Utter garbage. This is what I feel soured everyone's opinion on Naruto so much, that it erased their memories of how good it used to be. Stop here.

Part 2 (time skip) I'd say stop watching the show and pick up the Manga from this point. Part 2 is riddled with pointless filler at every turn, extremely slow, plodding pacing, and beats the friendship, bond bullshit over your head with no mercy. The manga itself gets a little wacky and nonsensical from this point, but it's quite a ride. Not as good as part 1 for me, but I'm still with it because why not it's fun.

So it's up to you. I see you've made your decision, but I urge you to just be your own judge, since a lot of GAF opinion on popular stuff seems to hinge on hyperbole. There's a lot of great character/fighting stuff to be found in the first part of Naruto, give it a try. You should know if it's the show for you by the end of the first arc.

Of course I know of the existence of Naruto. I'm registered on NeoGaf. I've watched a few episodes a couple of years back and it didn't strike me as anything different than Dragon Ball Z; a show about who's the strongest, with a lots of episodes with a lot of waiting between the fights.

Now it has come back on my radar again because I've started following what must be a 15 year old kid who posts nothing else than butts and anime. The anime gifs look cool. I'm curious, but would rather start somewhere towards the end than go back all the way to the beginning again.

And to specify my 'too old' thing from the title. I still fill 16 and there's nothing like good escapism fantasy; but I just can't be bothered to put hours into medium entertainment anymore.

(Attack on Titan scratched my itch though)

No.

Read it. The pacing of Naruto is absolutely terrible. Go to a wiki, find the special animated episodes that correspond to major fights, watch those on youtube.

Naruto, as an anime, is pretty fucking terrible to watch.

You could jump on Naruto if you want, I enjoyed that series for many, many years, but I'd try something superior like Hunter x Hunter.

Or if you want something that's hot blooded kids fighting to make a name for themselves, Air Gear.

Edit: Wait no, that's something you'll want to read, not watch.

Um...Katanagatari was fucking excellent.

No.

Any potential and enjoyment the series gives you will be destroyed when you reach the later parts of part 2. Seriously, stop while you're ahead.

Meh, Air Gear got weird to me after awhile. I love escalation, but that series escalated too much and got goddamn ridiculous. I loved everything covered in the anime though.

If you want hot blooded kids fighting though, Naruto is pretty good, for a large portion of it's run. The War started to lose me though, haven't kept up with Naruto in like a year.

Haha yeah. That book starts being about kids on roller blades. That book ends with clones fighting god over dominion of the world.

But the anime is poor. The manga is excellent though.

The war in Naruto is actually pretty interesting, but I'm still glad that I'm reading it rather than watching it. There are entire chapters that are just vocal exposition and I refuse to waste 23 minutes of my life for what essentially amounts to 3 important sentences.

If you have the time, why not. Keep a filler guide at your side and skip it, helps cut down on the massive amount of episodes, even if some of it is okay.

On the other hand, you could watch something better. Check the Anime of the Year 2013 thread. But if you're looking for something massive and lengthy, Naruto isn't horrible.

I watched Air Gear as a teen, it could have been a legitimately bad adaptation, but I enjoyed it! I do recall the animation being quite shitty . . .

What makes Hunter x Hunter better than Naruto?

Honestly, everything imo. The writing is better, the characters, battles and abilities are a lot more interesting, it's extremely consistent in it's world and rules, and the animation is always on point.

Or if you want something that's hot blooded kids fighting to make a name for themselves, Air Gear.

Air Gear is an absolute mess. Ridiculous. I'm not saying it can't be fun, but somewhere halfway through Oh! Great went completely off the deep end.

I'm 42 and only watched Naruto this last year or so. If you dump the filler it's quite entertaining. It's not clever and will be picked apart by anime snobs, doesn't mean it's not fun to watch. Try the first few and see if you get into it. But really, dump the filler, it's longer than a Goku power up sequence.

I really don't know how to answer. I felt the same, but caught myself watching several episodes as my little brother waded in, and got hooked[this was a while back].
I'm not sure what to say about it, other than it DID have some of the hypest anime fights I've ever seen. Few and far between like DBZ, yeah, but they're there.
Rock Lee was a badass.

Oh totally, but that's why it's a fun ride. That book fuckin' goes places.

I can't say I didn't enjoy my time with it. It was a special kind of fun waiting every week to see where the hell it would go next. It's especially rich when Oh! Great tries to explain the crazy shit with actual physics.

He does. And I don't think they ever resolve that. So at the end of the book, Obama is STILL, possibly permanently, in the body of a 16 year old girl.

They did switch back in the end.

unfortunately

Naruto is wonderful; by far my favorite of the "big 3" currently-running shonen. We'd be happy to welcome you in the official Shippuden thread to steer you on your journey! I'd definitely start from the beginning of the first series (or manga), don't just jump in. Goes way quicker than you think, especially if you read them. Crunchyroll has the entire series available so if you're not a subscriber yet that's definitely the way to go. You'll find a ton of other great shows on there too!

The hell, Naruto is fricking awesome! Just ignore the fillers (if someone has a good list of fillers to avoid, plz post).

Again, avoid the fillers at all costs.

Honestly, if you want a really good glimse into the Naruto world, Play the storm series.

The Naruto Storm games are the best supplementary lesson into the world of Naruto that you can get. They're shit as fighting games, but they have some truly hype representations of the first 600 or so episodes of the show.

i was probably 12 when i started reading naruto

fast forward 10 years and kishimoto still hasnt finished the manga

edit : yeah go ahead and read it. dont bother with the anime

Don't try anything someone else might look down on you for. You should always be conscious of how you represent yourself to others who you feel are more important than you in life because failing to do so will damage your future.

Don't watch things like anime period if you are an adult because you seriously risk being identified as a sexual predator or a virgin (even if you've had sex). You want to look like a person who has control of their life and a job. You don't want to come off as a person who still lives with their parents, is a child or a lover of children.

Please don't be offended by this. I felt I needed to give this to you straight rather than giving you poison advice like GAFfers typically post when a person asks a serious question.
