So should I try Naruto when I am sort of feeling too old?

I quit One Piece cold turkey and haven't look back.

Fun fact, every single person that complaints about Naruto shippuden ruining the ''themes'' of part one, still reads every chapter that comes out weekly, month by month and year after year.

Don't give me the ''I only read it to see it end'' because I quit One Piece cold turkey and haven't look back.
But that the reason why I read it.

Watch Hunter x Hunter instead. Naruto is garbage. I feel like shit when I think back to the amount of time I put into watching it and reading the manga.

Not true.

I quit after
the four kages and sasuke were talking about the past during the war. I couldn't do it anymore.

Both Part 1 and Part 2 are on Toonami so I can tell now that Part 1 has decent pacing, but Part 2's pacing has been awful so far! Would recommend the manga for Part 2, or at least until the Hidan & Kakuzu arc. In terms of filler, I haven't seen the filler arcs but you'll probably enjoy the episodic ones that involve your favourite side character.

As for the series itself: well you'll probably have fun if you like Shonen Battle series. It does have some pretty good fights.

People go ape shit for one piece and then complain about pacing in naruto, like anything happened on fishman island or punk hazard until the very last part of the arcs. The whole of impel down to marineford was great now its been one giant slog of nothingness for a few years.

One piece can go for years because they can end up on a island introduce a villain of the week and stay on that shit for a year, yeti cool brothers and vergo were lame as fuck.

Naruto is a shounen, which means it'll be pretty light on gore and romance, with emphasis on on action and competition.

It also has the shounen tunnel focus where you can expect almost any problem encountered to be solved by ninja tactics no matter how big or small.

Whether or not you're too old to enjoy it is really up to you OP.

I will say if you do decide to pick it up, in advance you should get yourself a list of the filler episodes so you know which ones to skip.

That's not to say there aren't any good filler episodes, but there's now over 600 episodes to go through and your not going to want to get bogged down by stuff that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Skip the fillers, Part 1 is defiantly worth watching mostly very enjoyable.

For Part 2 just watch the zombie twins hidan and kakuza arc that one ones fantastically excuted in the anime the rest not really except granny chiyo vs sasori fight, sasuke vs diedara, sasuke vs killer bee.

Read the rest of Part 2.

Other better must watch shounens you could be watch are One piece and Hunter x Hunter both are amazing.

How are people going to talk shit about Naruto and then suggest Hunter X Hunter... especially when the latest arc is committing Toonami Dragon Ball Z slowness crimes.

Watch Naruto, skip the filler arcs.
This shit right here. The epic shit in Naruto makes up for the bad parts.

I like the manga but can't stand the anime. As others have said, way too much filler. I also agree that the manga is getting a little stale. Hopefully the author winds it up soon.

The fuck is all this hate?

Anyway OP, read it, don't watch it as other are saying. They pump that shit with filler up the wazoo and most of it sucks.

Don't watch it. If anything, read it.

But even reading it is a waste of time so here's some stuff to read instead:

Full Metal Alchemist
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Kingdom (!!!)

It's Harry Potter with ninjas. I don't find the stories that interesting but the fight animations are simply amazing. Well worth watching for that.

The manga flows better but not seeing the fights fully animated would be a shame. Don't believe me? Just Youtube some Naruto fights.

If you're going to pick up one of the big 3 pick up One Piece

Otherwise pick up HxH 2011x Jojo Bizarre Adventure 2012, or if you like reading the Berserk Manga

Don't try anything someone else might look down on you for. You should always be conscious of how you represent yourself to others who you feel are more important than you in life because failing to do so will damage your future.

Don't watch things like anime period if you are an adult because you seriously risk being identified as a sexual predator or a virgin (even if you've had sex). You want to look like a person who has control of their life and a job. You don't want to come off as a person who still lives with their parents, is a child or a lover of children.

Please don't be offended by this. I felt I needed to give this to you straight rather than giving you poison advice like GAFfers typically post when a person asks a serious question.
I want to know if this is serious or a copypasta from somewhere

I never really liked the original Naruto, but Shippuden is decent, not great but decent. Imo if I was you I'd read the plot to Naruto on a wiki and then go watch Shippuden.

So...

I'm not big into anime, and I don't think I'd watched a serious continuously since DBZ when I was a young teenager.

A coworker of mine convinced me to chill out at his place and watch some Naruto. Now, I was aware of what Naruto was and what the fanbase was like, so I sort of looked at him funny.

Eventually I caved in, and it's pretty sick. Fuck it, call me a fan. Keep in mind that I watched it with a big anime buff who knew when to skip the 'filler'.

The only thing that's bullshit is that they keep killing off my favorite characters.
Asuma AND Jiraiya? Fuck you!

I 28 and started naruto a few weeks back and I'm about 80 episodes through (2 every morning before work and two every evening while working out). Loving the show. Gonna skip straight to shippuden rather than watching the filler though.

Bought the first 9 uk boxes on a whim for twenty quid and it hasn't disappointed. Fun show.

If you feel to old for naruto you should definitly watch Hunter x Hunter 2011 it basically the best in the genre :) also one piece is pretty good up to the war.

If you feel like watching an action show, it could be entertaining for a major arc or two until the "power level problem" goes off the rails.

It is pretty DBZ-like, except I was never convinced during the course of DBZ that the thing was more entertaining when Goku was off-camera. Naruto and his main rival character are 2 of the worst things about the show.

recent comic chapter spoilers :
They both recent spent a few chapters dead before "getting better," and it was the most enjoyable the book's been in aaaages.

Its not that bad, especially the initial episodes. It shows some "brilliance" later on and has good moments. Its not bad, its enjoyable if you like the characters and get into the setting.

When Naruto is on point its extremely good, however the filler and slow down are so annoying. I started working Shippuden again i'm around mid 50s episodes and the filler is back once again. Might have to follow the skip filler guide and power through it.

I see this via narutohq.com

Holy christ, I had forgotten that Naruto went through an entire YEAR of straight filler.

To be honest, it's not worth getting into. Like The Simpsons, at this point there is more bad than good. It starts off well even if it's just going through clichés, but man, the story goes off the rails.

Nope, strength training is the real fountain of youth. You can wear a headband if you want. Some people even say they are anabolic.

OP I will save you the trouble and summarize Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball, and probably a bunch of other anime as well.

Protag meets stronger enemy and gets ass kicked. Protag gets strong and beats enemy. Protag makes friends with enemy. Protag and new friend meet stronger enemy. Protag and Protag 2 fight stronger enemy and get asses kicked. Protag 1 and Protag 2 get stronger and beat enemy. Protags 1 and 2 makes friends with enemy. Rinse, wash, repeat.

Throw in teen angst, bumbling romance, and unexplained character flight and thats about it.

Man thanks for this informative post.

watch it and see what you think of it. the filler can be good at times, but otherwise it is a total drag just like with bleach. if it's not your cup of juice then read it. the series is almost over and same with bleach so now is the time to just blow through chapters and catch up if you really want to.

Naruto can be good at times, but it can be shit most of the time. Watch the bridge arc, the Chuunin exams, the arc where Naruto learns the Rasengan, then watch the Sasuke Retrieval arc. For Shippuuden, watch the first part and then skip everything up until the Pain arc and then stop. It will not get better than that.

Meh, I wouldn't. I would try watching a shorter series instead. A good gateway anime in my opinion is something like FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood. From there move onto others like Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Kaiji, Evangelion, and Gurren Lagann

Best thing about one piece is the near-total absence of angst and bumbling romance.

Never too old for good anime. But is Naruto good anime? Well....

I'll say it once was. I would recommend watching up to episode 137 (or something like that) of the original series. It's far from perfect, but has a lot of good moments and potential.

If you like it and really want more, then go ahead and move on to Shippuden. Be warned, the quality goes downhill a lot, Pain arc aside (and even that arc ended on a really sour note). Don't except much consistency from that point onward and....well, I'll let you find out the rest of the problems on your own. Oh, and there's way more filler and much worse pacing as well.

Indeed. Well, there's a lot of things that I feel can be argued as being the "best things" about One Piece. But yeah, it largely lacking in teenage BS like overbearing romance and angst/edginess is a big plus.

People will hate on it because it's popular or shonen or whatever. But mostly it's a pretty good action series with plenty of humor and some solid characters. And a rockin' soundtrack.

Start from episode 1 and watch until around episode 135 when part 1 ends. Don't watch Shippuden.

I never quite understood the "too old" for something argument. If you like something, or it appeals to you, than enjoy it.

Anyways, Naruto is a good series. I strongly suggest the manga over the anime though. While the anime adaptation has some good parts, it also has some really, really bad lows. Such as over a hundred episodes of filler hell. In comparison, the manga generally has good art and good pacing.

Now, Naruto isn't a perfect series, but it is a good one. As is to be expected, it has some really strong arcs and some lousy ones. It is also really long. If you were just curious about the series but don't want to commit to reading/watching the whole thing, then the best thing you could do is watch or read from the start till the end of the Chunin Exam arc. That stretch is probably Naruto at its most consistently good, for both the manga and anime. If you still want to see more of the series after that, you can just keep going.

Shippuden is great. (Just skip all the filler-only episodes like I did.) It's when the story really goes high octane. The villains get serious and the stakes punch through the roof. I can see how the post-timeskip grandiosity could turn some people off after the more personal feel of the earlier part, but I saw it as an opportunity to watch the big players clash on a grander scale than anything we'd been shown before. What can I say, I enjoy a good shounen power fantasy. Might be a corollary of my appreciation for western superheroes.

I don't think Shippuden is terrible. For me, it's mainly the absence of things that I liked from the first half:

1. The soundtrack. Part 1 had fast-paced metal songs infused with traditional Japanese instruments. Fights in the anime were made even more intense with guitar riffs accentuating the action. Now in Shippuden almost every fight is accompanied by some quiet flute music. The Shippuden soundtrack just seems boring by comparison.

2. The humor. There was a lot more going on between the characters in Part 1 besides the tension of the plot, and there were a lot of characters (Jiraiya, Kakashi, Naruto) who could provide both funny and serious moments. When I watch Shippuden, everyone seems uptight all of the time. There were some hints of humor in the first couple episodes (and with Killer B), but most of the time it's pretty dull.

3. The animation. Shippuden seems somewhat sloppily animated. Once fights get going it just doesn't look that great a lot of the time.

4. The story and villains. In part 1, a lot of the villains actually seemed comparable in strength to our main heroes. Zabuza was comparable to Kakashi. Naruto was comparable to Gaara. Orochimaru was overpowered but at least he was on par with the 3rd Hokage. Starting the story off with an organization of S class criminals who were far above the main characters made them seem relatively useless. Also, most fights now are DBZ style in an open field, not necessarily ninja-style fights with subterfuge, strategy, and deception such as in Part 1.

These may seem like minor points but they demonstrate some of the things I feel are lacking in Shippuden.
