Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Recently got a new car to replace my old beast that was 10 years old. After driving my new car for a few weeks only around town my avg MPG is 30.1. My old car barely got 20 mpg.

Doesn't sound like a massive difference, but dang does it feel like a massive difference week to week so far! I feel like I'm not always needing to get more gas, and that just going out to drive somewhere isn't a factor on how much gas I'll use.

Sure part of it is just that my car is new, and my old car was well old. Even still my old car never got close to this even when I got it.

Feels good GAF!!

What car did you have, and what do you have now?

I average high 20s around town...damn stoplights everywhere. On my last real trip (up to Cape Cod) I averaged between 39 and 41 mpg. '05 Honda Civic 5 speed (manual).

My motorcycle gets about 50 mpg.

I average 33 or so mpg on mine, but I'm known to wind out first gear <_<

Yeah, I enjoy good fuel economy. My car isn't good around town and it's not the best on the highway, but I get close to 28 or so highway, which isn't bad for a 25 year old car. My motorcycle gets about 50 mpg.

Compared to my uncle's truck which I used to move, spent $100 at the pump and didn't even fill it up 3/4.

I'm car shopping right now. I test drove a Prius fell in love with it. I currently have a budget of 10,500 and it is hard a shit to find a gen 3 prius for that amount (not salvage) because look at this shit:

I don't get why people can still think they are ugly.

Because they are. But if you like it, who cares? Plenty of other people don't find them too offensive looking to own. I personally don't think they (or their competitors) make sense to own. Check out the Mazda 3.

Because it is ugly. The Ford Fusion Hybrid and even Lincoln MKZ Hybrid (expensive as hell) look way better.

45-50 city makes sense to me. If you buy used you save roughly save 4 grand every five years. Negating any extra initial cost.

I've seen a lot of Nissan Leaf around driving the last few months.
Never saw them the first couple of years. Kind of want to test drive one, but don't care for the styling.

The Ford and Lincoln definitely look better, but I think Toyota was going for practicality with the Prius. That is one thing I really like about the Prius, its very practical. You can fold down the seats and it allows for crazy cargo room for a small car. I don't like the look of the Prius either, but if I was looking for a practical vehicle to get me from A to B and for grocery store runs, Prius is definitely towards the top of the list. I really like the Fusion, I rented one for a few days and it was a joy to drive, but I'd probably get a Prius over a Fusion just because I'm a practical kinda guy and don't want to pay more for pretty but non-functional design.

It's not ugly it's just the ultimate in boredom engineering.

Edit: Personally I don't get how anyone could be excited about a Prius outside of "Wow I'll save a bunch of money!" I drove one as a loaner from a dealer once and couldn't stand it. It was like becoming one with a washing machine.

Yeah if I have to own a car (and I'm going to try my best to not have to) it's going to hopefully be one with killer gas mileage because fuck paying for gas.

I have three cars. The most fuel efficient one topped out at 22mpg once. Well I guess one of the others is better, but it's also a race car so highway cruising isn't really a thing.

Learned on the "things you should know" podcast today that 10 better mpg can save you $7,000 in 5 years if you take average gas prices these days and the average distance an American drives per year.

The Fusion Hybrid has good trunk space and better fuel economy than the Prius. I've been researching Hybrid and Electric cars recently.

Seriously. I can't believe the lack of improvement in that area.

Up until I had it a year ago, my 2000 mitsubishi mirage got 30mpg.

That's because that car barely weighed 2000lbs. Modern safety features add a lot of weight to a car, even the very tiny Fiat 500 weights 2400lbs. Your average sedan nowadays weighs 3300-3500lbs.

Subtract the significantly increased weight from modern cars and you'll find that modern engines are lightyears ahead in terms of efficiency.

Power mode my friend....

I have had one since 2009, have enjoyed driving it, and the MPGs

That fusion hybrid looks really nice. Haven't really been into American cars at any point in my life but if I were buying right now I would strongly consider one.

I prefer the looks of the Prius over the Fusion! But yes the Prius is a boring car. Don't mind it though since people I know with love just going out for a drive on the weekends. I don't do that anymore to save money on gas.

Edit:
My next car will be a Volt or a Prius. Hopefully the volt. Want to stop using gas.

Depends on how much mileage your current car gets. Going from 10mpg to 20mpg is a huge change, going from 40mpg to 50mpg is a drop in the bucket.

Um, what? The Prius still has better fuel economy than the the Fusion hybrid.

2014 Toyota Prius: 51 / 48 MPG
Ford Fusion hybrid: 47 / 47 MPG

^Also, many Fusion owners are reporting not getting the stated 47 MPG, so much so that there was a lawsuit over it.

I ride a 250 supermoto to and from work (only about 10 minutes from home) ... 70/MPG ... come at me bros ... it's a 2 gallon tank, so when I fill up (about once a week) it's about $4.50 or so at the pump ...

The Fusion did have a big ass trunk, I'll give it that. However, the Prius has the hatch back and the opening is massive. You can easily fit a desk or small dresser in there with room to spare. Good luck doing that with a Fusion. Really depends on your needs and budget. If I had the money for a Fusion, I'd probably also have the money for a small truck so the cargo doesn't matter as much.

Oh wait, I might be thinking of the 2013 Prius. Cause I remember it being in the 30s or something.

Add me to the Prius is just an offensive looking car camp. Would never own one. Then again, I don't really care to own any of the hybrids on the market at the moment either.

I have a Mazda 2, and the mileage is pretty great, especially on highway trips. It also cost about half as much as a Prius.

Our other car, a '14 Forester, gets around 30-32 on the freeway when fully loaded with four people and their luggage, far better than the car it replaced ('08 Impreza 2.5i).

My 2014 Focus shows an average of 28.5 mpg on the dash. Not even close to some of you guys, but much better than the ~20 or so I was getting with my last car.

I had a fucked up old Maverick for a while that was lucky to get 15. That 1973 fuel economy.

Have you driven the car 2000 miles yet? And have you driven on the highway? I heard your MPG is not accurate when you first get the car. I saw some brand new cars that have single digits in the MPGs.

Switched from a 25mpg Volvo to a CR-Z I'm getting about 38mpg in and couldn't be happier. Fun little go-cart as well, it has totally reminded me how much fun driving can be. Don't even think twice about taking the long way home just to hit the twisties.

I miss my Saturn for this reason. My first car was a Chevy Caprice classic. It got abotu 18 mpg. but I owned this thing back in 99/2000 when gas was about a $1 per gallon. After I finished university, I saw which way the winds were blowing (and working 35 miles away from home), and I bought a 99 Saturn SL1. Made some adjustments and that thing got 40 mpg on the highway...and most of my driving was highway. I was very sad when circumstances forced me to get rid of that car.

I picked up an Olds Alero...wasn't a terrible car, and got OK mpg...for a 6-cyl. Still nothing like what the Saturn got. I have a Nissen Versa now, gets about 31-32 hwy, and my Dad & I just fixed up a 2002 Saturn, so I'll start driving that soon. probably about the same...maybe a bit better then the Nissen on MPG.

The single barrel carburetors on American six cylinders pretty much sucked back then. I had a 60s Mopar with a slant six in it. When I finally found a carb with a decent measure of drivability, I was getting about the same mileage. The sick thing about that is I'm driving something even older now, with a bigger engine, and it gets nearly twice the fuel economy.

I have a 2012 Hyundai Elantra. I only get ~30 around town, but it's nice for long trips. Driving five hours, one way for a week vacation in June and then from Madison, WI to DC in August. I get around 36-38 on highway. My car will only be paid off in December/January so it will be a bit before I buy a new one again. I would like to see natural gas as a viable option by between 2017-2020 when I buy a new car. Who knows where we'll stand at that point.

This is my first new car. All my previous cars were at least seven years old when I bought them. Prior to this car, my newest year model was a '92 Park Avenue. My Elantra is definitely a huge step up from previous rides.

Had an old VW Jetta. It was the 4 cyl 1.8T though and the turbo sucked some gas.

Just got a Toyota Corolla regular 4 cyl.

Brushing 3500 miles. It's still jumpy and crunchy sometimes when shifting gears, don't know how long that's supposed to last.

28.5 is split between highway and city. Highway by itself is ~34, city ~25.

I drive old vw rabbit with later tdi diesel engine. try 50+mpg all day long bitches.

slang that sucker around like a go kart.

don't ask me about safety, i think im dead if i get into a crash :(

Too bad Kei cars never really took off in the US, besides some ancient Crosleys. The Smart cars are small but the fuel economy is a joke compared to other smallish cars with actual storage space.

My 2011 WRX gets terrible gas mileage, probably like 20mpg combined...I have a long commute too.

I'm considering trading it in for a new VW Jetta TDI clean diesel. They get 42 mpg and are, imo, drop dead gorgeous. As another plus, diesel engines last forever.

I had a dodge dart slant six. Bulletproof engine with the worst carb ever. Upgrading it was like putting a fucking turbo on there and ya. Same fucking milage.

I have a 2005 civic manual and I get about 31 pushing on 32 mpg in city (I maybe get on a highway one a month, maybe) on a tank of gas. Not to far off but if high 20's is closer to 25 then something is wrong.
