I feel like Fits just wants SOMEBODY. I mean, he was making the eyes at Sky before it became clear that Alpha Agent wanted her. May's outta question so there's the one female I as a viewer thought was his sister for most of the season... and now he's getting out Alphaed again.
I think Simmons is "the one," at least right now. Skye was only in the picture because he didn't really know Simmons yet. I don't think Triplett is a threat, nor do I think he'll bend for an "easy" woman if she happened to come by.

What I will say about Triplett is that he still brings a very ominous feel to every scene, his allegiance still feels ambiguous. I'm not entirely convinced, even if he says all the right things.

Are you misreading him as EMP Triplett?

Narratively you don't pull the same trick twice - he's fine. Fitz/Ward both really do appear to have doom clocks hanging over their heads, though. And a nice reminder that neither of Skye's names are actually real. Jessica Drew actually was (is) an Agent of SWORD.

Fitz is great. It does feel a little odd how they are showing Triplett somewhat filling his role when it comes to technical knowledge, so I am afraid one of the best characters may bite the bullet.

Two other things I loved:

"Mary Sue Poots" was an awesome self-jab at the fan reaction to Skye

The creepy penny maneuver and Skye smartly putting it back

What was the penny for? If it was to tell if anyone went into the room then her putting it back was, to what? Pretend like she was being playful? Also, anyone entering the room would notice that penny fall and put it back, so there's no point to it, right?

You'd put a penny back into a doorjamb?

Skye put it back so Ward wouldn't know she'd seen the dead body. (The room Ward saw her come out of wasn't the storage room where the body was.)

If that tie in happens, then the thread title for season 2 should be:

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. [s2 OT] You have my S.W.O.R.D.

and was it implied that May had beef with Hill?
possibly over letting Fury get "killed" or something? and was her mom's license plate supposed to mean something?

Momma May was asking due to the events of TWS. There's no beef between the characters that we're aware of. As for the plates, I'd have to check again.

Fitz knows Simmons best. They went though the academt together and have been close the entire time.

The penny was indeed a way for Ward to know if anyone had gone into the storage room. Skye putting it back showed two things. That she was aware of what it meant when most people wouldn't have thought twice about it and it was a test she set up for Ward. She watched him open the door and catch the penny, which proves he knew about it. A way to be certain it was Ward who took out Agent lanyard.

LOL nah man, it's not. It's already been renewed for a second season.

It hasn't been renewed yet, which is telling that it's still on the bubble. People are so certain it's getting renewed, but if they haven't announced anything yet, that means there still is uncertainty and likely they will wait to see how the whole season plays out first. If the ratings keep sliding as they have been, I wouldn't be so sure of it coming back if they are taking such a wait and see approach.

They obviously don't want to cancel it, it's all part of their Marvel synergy strategy but them not announcing renewal already shows that there is doubts still.

Very tense episode yet cool to follow ..

I must admit it didn't click what the piece was untill ward caught it..

If skye didn't leave a message on that tablet or something i would be quite disapointed.

Might have missed it, but what was the deal with Skye focussing on that window/picture before the cut?

Did Ward pull out that needle (?) from his nail to show that it was something he used to try to fool the lie detector? If its obvious, I missed it.

Yeah, he used it to be in constant pain during the process, thus spiking all over the place to cover up lies.

ABC hasn't renewed anything yet. They typically don't until the first week of May or so. But I'd be really surprised if this doesn't get a second season.

Would have been cool to work in a nod to Blackout's costume.

Liked this episode a lot, the whole Skye/Ward situation was pretty tense. Blackout was done pretty well, and it's nice to see the agents go up against someone with powers for once.

Can't wait for Hill next week, hope she's got a big part for the last few eps.

I was watching this at the start of the season but haven't kept up with it and Hulu has passed what I saw.

Is it worth just waiting on the Blu-ray or Netflix and binging the entire season that way?

Was expecting May's mom to say "Hail Hydra, dear!"

I guess the meme started after they filmed this episode, right?

It wouldn't lead into A2. It'd lead into GOTG.

Hence why some of us are pretty sure who's behind TAHITI.

Do you think it will happen in the main plot, or in a tag or extra scene.

If so, would a cliffhanger about the show's main plot actually not be the last scene we see this season?

Maybe a GOG tie-in could be the final scene of the second to last episode.

LOL nah man, it's not. It's already been renewed for a second season.

Source?

A renewal is likely (above 90% IMHO),
but I haven't heard about a renewal.

Link? Last I read the ratings were just ok and it was on the bubble for renewal.

Well just OK is enough, and it is slightly above average.
Plus it is the first thing in quite some time to work for ABC on Tuesdays at 8.

"Mary Sue Poots" was an awesome self-jab at the fan reaction to Skye

And it flew over my head :(

I also loved Simmons' s TARDIS line haha

On a related note:
There was a background graphic about someone, who just disappeared and used an old gun.
Who could that be?
(Timetraveler or teleporter from Marvel?)

I really liked this episode and I'm glad the show is getting better. Also everyone on AV Club is obsessed with the Agent Ward meme. But all I can say whenever Ward does something is "Fuck you Ward!"

Amy was really great. In some ways this was the most impressive episode. The synergy of the romance angles played a part in that.

This was probably the most surprising thing to me. Typically when I know I'm about to watch a romance-heavy episode I automatically lower my expectations but the three different takes worked well in combination with one another so it didn't feel overbearing.

Coulson/Audrey didn't feel as ham-fisted of a pairing as I thought - they made such a big deal about this "cellist" being a throwaway line in the movies (which it was - she wasn't important) and actually succeeded in making it important for Coulson.

Skye/Ward definitely have some chemistry together and that made the reveal to Skye wayyyyy more effective, I'm actually feeling for her for once.

And Fitz is still fucking adorable with how fast he blurted out "Simmons" in response to the box question...but I think he's doomed at this point with how much they're making it look like Triplett will easily take his place.

Disappointed that Koenig got killed off so fast but it didn't seem like they were going to take his character anywhere. I just love Patton Oswalt and would have liked to see him stick around for the rest of the season at least.

I almost liked this episode. I hated that Ward was failing the lie detector test and Ward didn't die right then and there. When he was let go I had to rationalize it as, this guy isn't dumb and ahs to be too paranoid he'll be watching Ward to see what he wants with Skye.

Then they guy allows Skye to see that he is spying on everyone. I had a boss that was incompetent and sceevy like this so this already made the episode worse than it was. Then he makes a casual line later on where he clearly thinks WArd is only there because he has the hots for Skye. This bit of stupidity damaged the episode. Otherwise I liked the two side plots with May and Coulson. Fitz was a bit annoying and I wish he just said what was on his mind. I find it weird in general it's Fitz who has these "feelings" when from the beginning it was Simmons who was acting all bottled up inside.

the Ward and Skye segment carried this episode. my favorite was sky crying. sold it pretty well

She sold it too well. Her composure after kissing Ward again felt like bullshit after the state we saw her in.

Koenig is a smart but socially awkward person. This is a guy living in a secret base by himself playing CoD with his brother. He is ready to shoot Ward for lying but lets him go because he thinks that love can make you act irrationally. It's this idealistic view that leads to his downfall. Not sure why he didn't tell Skye about May leaving though.

Fitz is pretty much the same as Koenig. He's inexperienced with relationships and people. He likes Simmons but probably doesn't know himself whether it's a romantic attraction, a possessiveness, or simply a case of her being available. May is too old and Skye likes Ward.

Trip challenges him intellectually and physically which makes him jealous and hostile towards him. He thinks his situation is like Coulson's feelings towards the cellist with two first names, but incorrectly assumes that he needs to lie to protect her.

I don't think Trip being knowledgeable about things means he'll replace Fitz. It's just meant to show that Fitz is trying to one-up him the only way he knows how but it backfires. He just wants to impress Simmons. Did anyone else notice that only he calls Simmons by her first name? Everyone calls him Fitz.

My favorite (and unintentionally funny scene) is when Coulson kisses the Cellist and just GTFO as Simmons took his place. :lol It was just done so casually.

Tsai Chin

She used to be a Bond girl and played Ming Na Wen's aunt in the Joy Luck Club. She is awesome and perfectly cast to play May's mom.

Ming Na was in Joy Luck Club?!

I figured Koenig wasn't actively looking at the tablet tracker when May physically left the base.

Also good call on pointing out how Trip is uniquely threatening to Fitz.

I think it's more that the answer about Skye would explain the previous readings from the lie detector. Pretty sure Ward set this up on purpose to get Koenig to think that all his weird readings was really a hidden attraction for Skye that he was hiding because it might compromise him as a SHIELD agent. Skye was set up to be the final answer in this way so there wouldn't be any awkward follow up questions about why, exactly, he came back for her specifically. Which probably would have happened if he'd mentioned that first. Playing the forbidden love card gave him some leeway on his other fake answers.

It's a bit dumb that Fury would put that much trust in someone who would then go on to blindly trust Ward's "I did it for love" bullshit.

This is a super secret base and you're screening for deadly Hydra assassins and double agents. In that case I'd like to think you'd be a little stricter about your lie detector protocols.

It is kinda disappointing the unbeatable lie detectors gets defeated so easily.

It didn't though. Koenig got beat. He should've immediately known something was up when the baseline readings were all over the place and he should never have changed the phrasing of his Hydra questions. His phrasing allowed Ward to manipulate his answer to pass the question.

Koenig definitely screwed up but I think Fury's deciding on placing him there was likely more because the guy was a stickler for regulations and a relative nobody agent. Dude was only Level 6 clearance, socially awkward, and likely only ever a paper pusher. Fury's goal would've been simply to place an agent there that was legitimately SHIELD and would follow the protocols that Fury laid out. Unfortunately the same reasons why Koenig wasn't likely to be a rogue or spy is the same reason why he ended up dying. Too naive to be distrustful enough.

Thought that was a good episode. Thank god they're throwing the Ward/Skye relationship under a bus.

Just wished they'd throw in more external references than using the same Cap/Hulk/Iron Man/Black Widow references. (Hawkeye am cry.)

What's with all the clamoring for more Hawkeye in these Marvel threads? I had no idea that people liked him so much.

I did a photochop of my face on the guy behind Alison in the Avatar of yours.

The lie detector didn't fuck up Koenig did.

EDIT: Other people have stated it much better than I. Its funny how relatively far the show has come, as it now has things happening where people feel strongly enough to go into in depth detail. Upwards and onwards!

Not as high as I was hoping for the live numbers, but an improvement all the same. overnights will boost it as they always do, here is hoping the trend continues. They really did the show no favors by fucking with its airing dates so much this season, so some recovery is a good sign.
