Point n Click Adventure GAF 2014 No longer in our dreams, memories or just Germany.

I've read about it, seemed interesting, but never tried it though. Have you?

Nope and 15 bucks is a bit too much for me to jump in blindly.

Played the Tesla Effect demo yesterday and really enjoyed it. Never played a Tex Murphy game before but I might play this.

This got me thinking that my first adventure game was Monkey Island back in 1991 I think. What a perfect introduction to the genre that was.

What was the first adventure game that you guys played?

My memory is a bit hazy...
I think it was The Secret of Monkey Island, Leisure Suit Larry, Maniac Mansion or Maupiti Island.

Is The Samaritan Paradox any good?

Nice, hope there will be a lot more like you. Would love for a few more sequels now that Big Finish has the technology and tools at the ready.

The Dig. I loved the atmosphere and the music and got pretty far actually, but I never beat it until like 15 years later.

Can't remember exactly when that was. I was still fairly young so I guess sometime in the late 90's.

You should at least play Pandora Detective (comes with pre-order) because Tesla Effect is meant to be a direct sequel to that. Having said that play all if them from Under a Killing Moon, skip Tex Murphy 1 & 2.

Because I'm so interested in Tesla Effect, I feel obligated to be exposed to all his past games. Gonna be a fun journey.

Who else is stoked for Blackwell Epiphany next week? I'm worried my memory of the previous games is a little foggy, but still looking forward to it.

Played little more than an hour of Moebius and so far it has been interesting. This being a Phoenix Online game, I had set my expectations low in regards to the technical side of things, so far the crappy animations aren't too grating to me.

This is why I'm concerned about the Gabriel Knight remake... the Phoenix Online jank is just terrible.

I think the first point-and-click I played may have been DOTT, but that's somewhat misleading - I'd already been a fan of text adventures for several years before that. I posted in the thread about 'being converted to genres' about the game that introduced me to the joys of that. Even then, Escape wasn't the first game I attempted to play, just the first one I understood. I'd have had a failed attempt at playing The Hobbit and maybe Smuggler's Cove prior to that. Smuggler's Cove being an oddity, in that I'd remembered it as a serious adventure - given, as I mentioned in the linked post, the idea that adventures were "games for grown-ups" - and then when I revisited it *after* my Road To Damascus moment, I actually found that it was very silly indeed, including - if I remember correctly - one item being "A bag of Monster Munchies tied to a lifebelt"

so this point and click thing seems to be taking off :O

I remember playing the demo for broken sword 2 over and over on PC when i was younger. I wish i'd had the full thing

having quite a bit of fun with moebius. it's really stupid, and absurd. but very entertaining. and apart from the animations, and some weird lag or timing problems, on scenes where you have to move the nosferatu looking guy around, it's pretty quick and nice to control. easy too, but that's no big minus. enjoying it quite a lot.

feels and looks very cheap overall. the items parts are almost like hidden object games. they feel that throwaway or arbitrary. or maybe it's that the item hunt is so linear. but still, enjoying it.

I generally agree with this. To be honest, I didn't find the storyline to be anywhere near as intriguing as Jensen's last game, Gray Matter, as well as bordering on the absurd at times, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The character modelling and animation are almost on an amateur level though, and that's quite hard to ignore.

Played through Police Quest 1 VGA over the weekend. It was fun, immersive and the feeling of progress is quite satisfying as you go from uniformed policeman, to
narcotics detective and eventually undercover agent.

Now on to Rex Nebular.

Just picked up Samaritan Paradox. Enjoying it so far, a couple hours in. Really liked the publisher's other game, The Cat Lady.

As mentioned skip Tex Murphy 1 & 2 (Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum). Start with Under a Killing Moon.

Opinions and all, but I disagree completely. While it certainly shows its age (probably safer to play with a guide), Tex Murphy 1 is a spectacular adventure game, if you can look past its warts. And I actually think it’s significantly better than its FMV remake. It’s very open (in the way that textbox adventure games were open), while not being competely obtuse.
The action sequences sucked, though.

I haven’t played TM2 so I can’t comment on that.

About to start Tex Murphy Overseer.

What MPEG2 codec should i be choosing? Any way to get true WASD working?

Also how is The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief? Its $6.25 on Steam.

During my Youtube travels I've stumbled upon a video series from a couple years ago that highlights the history of the adventure genre. If anybody has ~45 min to spare, it's worth a watch.

Here's the first video (five parts total):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEQLcSvjLbA

If that has left you wanting more I can recommend Get Lamp - The Documentary by Jason Scott as it has interviews with many of the big names in the adventure scene. Some parts are up on Youtube. It's more focused on the Interactive Fiction or Text Adventures but the rise of graphical adventures is in there too. I also have his BBS Documentary which is fascinating.

Thank you for the heads up - I will check that out. :)

I think it's worth buying for the lovely first episode. You should probably stop partially into the second.

If that bothers you, wait for the new Blackwell game in two days!

Broken Sword 5 is pretty good.
Which is surprising, considering how bad 3 and 4 were.
A bit slow and irritating sometimes, but with a nice enough story, good puzzles and pretty background graphics (still hate the 3D characters, they feel out of place).

The whole
deicide
thing is rather silly and kinda ruins the plot, though. And
that final pun
is terrible and awkward.

Decided to start the Blackwell games! I have the 4 games from gog.com and installed them on my Windows 8.1 laptop. Is there a way to get the games to run windowed cuz I really don't like how pixelated it looks with my laptop running it fullscreen lol.

Oh and I'm hoping to finish Erica Reed within the next day or two. Gotta say this game has a nice story, some good characters and superb voice acting.

There is a setup file for all Wadjet Eye Games in the directory folder that let's you change windowed, resolution and some graphics modes.

just to go on further, the file you are looking for is winsetup.exe

This is an example with Resonance but the process is the same for all Wadjet Eye Games. Bumping up the graphics filter makes the game higher resolution.

Alight found it, and changed the settings thanks.

So uh Cognition: Erica Reed Ep. 4's intro
I confess the idea crossed my mind but I never expected them to go through with it lol

Goddamn, the backgrounds in Blackwell Epiphany are amazing. I love the colors and the little animated bits! The sprites are good too! And the music! EVERYTHING IS LOVELY BUT I AM AN IDIOT AND GOT STUCK

Tried talking to Joey? He doubled down as ingame hint system in previous games.

Having completed The Blackwell Epiphany, I would say that's on par with the previous episodes. For fans it should mean more Rosa+Joey action and a finale which is truly an ending. For me it means it's another mediocre-to-good game in a mediocre-to-good series.

I think the games never manage to reach their full potential. The interaction between Red and Blue are nice, but the plots are quite messy and not developed enough to get me fully engrossed. For this last episode I think Gilbert went through a lot of rewritings and changes that hurt the story's unfolding and some characters too. The writing in the series never hit the right spots with me. The ending left me a bit speechless, but not in a good way.

Puzzles are not the main dish here, and that's okay, but they are pretty boring and they more often than not involve trying to find a way to open a locked door (by finding a not so hidden key or a code). Some things involve having a huge suspension of disbelief, like finding a single incriminating note left behind in a deserted apartment with nothing else inside but the note itself in plain sight. Also Joey's just acting as a bellows all the times, and sometimes in a pretty dull way.

I think Epiphany has better graphics than Deception and the dub is good as always. Of course this is not as unusual for indie adventures as it was when Legacy came out, but it's nice to see the quality is still here (and better than ever).

All in all, I'm sure fans will love this. But if the story didn't "click" with you in the previous episodes, I don't think Epiphany will make you change your mind or prove itself to be a great experience as a point and click adventure.

Where did you think the rewriting came in? I was surprised at how "consistent" much of it was - Gilbert seemed to have thought of most of the nit-picky things I was wondering about.
The only bit I thought was poorly handled was "the universe flowing through Rosa" - that didn't really make very much sense to me, nor did her resurrecting Joey (or the very fact that he didn't move on).

Admittedly much of what made this game work was it tying up loose ends and offering fan service for those who'd played the whole series.

These are all true. I think developers struggle to make "investigative" games without the crutch of wacky object puzzles, and the basic easiness of the Blackwell games and their ilk is the result; the puzzles aren't massively difficult because they aren't even puzzles, they make sense, because they take place in something approaching the real world. In games set in other worlds (like Primordia, for instance) or comedy adventures, you can be more inventive; here things are grounded in reality.

I think Epiphany has better graphics than Deception and the dub is good as always. Of course this is not as unusual for indie adventures as it was when Legacy came out, but it's nice to see the quality is still here (and better than ever).

It strikes me that all of Ben Chandler's walk cycles look exactly the same in every game he does the art for. He's a very talented man, but it's that weird walk where their arms don't seem to move quite enough and they're ram-rod straight.

The voice acting really is excellent, though - particularly coming off playing Moebius!

All in all, I'm sure fans will love this. But if the story didn't "click" with you in the previous episodes, I don't think Epiphany will make you change your mind or prove itself to be a great experience as a point and click adventure.

I would say that Epiphany is probably my favourite of the Blackwell games; it's the first where I really felt I got what I paid for, for some reason. The games themselves are fine, if hardly life changing experiences, and I'm probably cutting it some slack because (again) I've just been playing Moebius, but I enjoyed this instalment the most out of all of them.

Yea Raven is worth it for $6. It has a phenomenal first episode. The quality dips later on, especially with lots of areas being reused but it's not a bad game.

GAF, I'm getting close to the end of Blackwell Epiphany and oh god I love it. Seriously amazing stuff. Dave Gilbert is easily the best writer in the genre.

But do yourself a favor and play the earlier games before this one.

edit: I just went back to read the RPS review and it looks like Richard Cobbett agrees.

The Blackwell Epiphany isn’t a good ending for the Blackwell series. It’s pretty much the perfect ending, both wrapping up and nailing a series that’s been going from strength to strength since it first appeared way back in 2006. It’s a testament to just how far both Wadjet Eye and creator Dave Gilbert’s writing have have come since the clever-but-janky Blackwell Legacy, excellent Unbound, slightly stumbling Convergence, and the confident, fully formed Deception from – gosh, 2011? Really? It doesn’t seem that long, not least because of how easy it is to slip into new adventures with awkward psychopomp Rosa Blackwell and her ghost partner Joey. I’m going to miss them.

I suppose other games have more interesting puzzles but that's not why I like the genre so much.

I've only played King's Quest VI: Insert Stupid Pun Heir so

FYI: ScummVM offers dual mode for King's Quest 6 (and Laura Bow 2) since about half a year. Which means portraits (even the awesome hi-res ones) and textboxes together.

I have never played another Jane Jensen game.

You should play Gabriel Knight 1. It's one of the most awesome games ever.

ANYWAY. My next KQ game is probably gonna be the remake of KQ3, because who doesn't love a game about kidnapping & forced slavery to a terrifying wizard who'll murder you if you don't change his bedpan? I've also got Gabriel Knight 1, Resonance, Gemini Rue, and the Ben Dan games on the docket.

Play Gabriel Knight 1. Play Gabriel Knight 1.
It's sadly not supported properly in ScummVM yet.

And maybe you should also play KQ4. It's not that difficult (except for
climbing around inside the fucking whale
) and it's extremely charming.
For example you can kiss almost everything in the game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXFiT5JG-n4 (spoilers, duh)

Have you tried the daily development snapshots? The main ScummVM program is usually months if not years behind and I know someone was working on the Gabriel Knight/Quest for Glory 4 engine.

It's not supported yet, because there are all sorts of issues. The whole graphics code for SCI32 is hacked and guessed together. For that it works pretty well, but there are all sorts of issues. Gabriel Knight 1 was already completable and several timer related glitches are even already patched out automatically.

I am a ScummVM developer and actually working on SCI lol

So, I just figured out that I love playing point and click games on my phone in bed. Anyone have a list of good (preferably retro, or retro style) point and click on android? I got both the broken sword games from humble bundle, and they're great. I was thinking about picking up simon the sorcerer next.
