Listening to gamers and offering exclusive games is the future of XONE - Phil Spencer

I see no problem in buying exclusives. This is a business and they do wanna sell consoles. If a game is better on PS4 why not take away any other competitors. Just gotta save and get both bruh
I want neither right now. I'm pretty much a PC convert at this point. First and second party exclusives are what make things interesting for me. I can see myself picking up one of these systems down the road as their libraries grow. Money hats and timed exclusives aren't compelling to me.

By 'offering exclusives', do they mean buying them or making them? I don't mean to take such a negative stance on them as they try to turn things around, but it gets old seeing things that don't need to be exclusive become exclusive.

Absolutely. If buying away exclusives from other platforms is what they mean by this, then I do not want them to succeed. Making games via their studios should be the focus.

I don't understand this dislike of buying exclusives. What's the problem?

Honestly, I couldn't give a shit. It didn't affect my enjoyment of GTA 3, it didn't affect my enjoyment of TitanFall or any game put into this situation. If it meant people kept jobs and become successful from it in creating quality games then I'm not bothered.

There are exciting times ahead for gamers if Phil Spencer has anything to do with it. The new head of Xbox has spoken with CNN Money and speaks about the importance of listening to feedback from customers so that products are tailored to meet specific needs. Responding to a question about the change in decision to protect games with DRM, Spencer says that he told the vocal opposition to heart -- "I took it personally -- you'd be hard-pressed to find someone at Xbox who didn't".

Moving forward, Xbox One owners should have some sensational titles to look forward to as there will be a strong focus on exclusive games for the platforms. Long gone are the days of being able to find the same games available for every console, in the modern age of gaming it is the exclusive titles that pull in customers -- as demonstrated perfectly by the likes of Titanfall and Ryse: Son of Rome.

This makes me really, really excited. I just hope these games are actually exclusive to Xbox One and not "the Microsoft ecosystem."

:-P

Well as long as you're listening to fans give me a Halo that isn't entirely bogged down by novel lore and semirandom Callofdutification elements and you'll have my money

I think everyone can agree that saying without doing doesn't amount to anything. Clearly, Phil Spencer is being more vocal about his and the team's ambitions over at Xbox, but that's the reality of being connected wth fans more so than ever; especially ones who have been disappointed in the output and actions of the Xbox division over the last years of the 360 and subsequent release of the Xbox One.

I know I'm not alone in the excitement of seeing what they have to show. I believe they've been working hard on getting games for the platform that wont just be expected sequels, and hopefully, E3 will be a joy to watch in regards to all platforms and publishers.

This is just like Shu saying Sony has exciting things planned for E3 etc. Of course they are going to say the things people want to hear.

meh. just compare 360 and ps3 exclusives for the past 4 years. 2013 alone is telling.

xbox keeps on harping about games when in recent years they have nothing to show for it relative to the competition. they've been striving for other goals and now suddenly they're talking about games.

they've been playing catch up the whole time. when gamescom dropped they've only announced their id@xbox program while sony revealed all the indie games coming to ps4/vita like rogue legacy and hotline miami 2 and even exclusive like volume.

so far, i can see microsoft moneyhatting for exclusives. i just feel like they'll moneyhat a multiplat to come first on xbone just as they did with 360. they can keep doing that but that's not what i'd call an investment to gamers but rather "here's something that you'll get to play first on xbone. buy xbone if you want to have early access."

and they have to expand their library. honestly, there's a reason why the halo/gears/forza/fable joke is the way it is. it's good that they have remedy but don't depend on a single studio to come up with a new ip. invest in smaller games.

it'd be funny if they got thatgamecompany's new game.

Not really. Spencer has been trying to hype up the fanbase ever since the DRM fiasco.

Whereas Shu pretty much trolls anyone who tries to hype up, E3, Gamescom, PAX, etc. implying to them that they shouldn't get their hopes up
he's usually right

That OP sure sugar-coated his answer a tad.

What role will exclusive games play in this generation of the console battle, especially as fewer "AAA" games are being developed today vs. past console generations?

Exclusive games will continue to play a major role for Xbox in the new console generation, just as they have in previous generations. I'm a true believer in our exclusive platform features like Kinect, SmartGlass, and the Cloud, but games have always been the bedrock of our consoles at Xbox. On Xbox One, we came out of the gate strong last November with Forza Motorsport 5, Dead Rising 3, and Ryse: Son of Rome, and we haven't slowed down having just released Kinect Sports Rivals, and of course Titanfall. This E3 is important for us to show gamers our future plans for exclusives and third-party support.

They really should have canned all those involved publicly with XB1 reveal. It just feels like a new interview every week where he's just pandering to audience, even if he's not just blowing smoke.

I hope this means they'll be funding the development of more exclusive games instead of buying exclusivity of already-developed games. Add to the industry, don't subtract from it.
I assume you are referring to Titanfall which wasn't even the case with that game.

Its obviously not talk. E3 is so close if Phil grossly exaggerated or outright lied he would be the one looking like a fool on stage. He would just be inviting even more bad PR. I'm 100% confident they'll have an amazing show this year.

I've had zero interest to buy an Xbox One, until Spencer took over. My interest went up a small amount. E3 will be what speaks loudest.

I see Quantum Break has made into the "MS only has 4 exclusives" rhetoric. Fable must be pretty sour about losing the spotlight in such a coveted list.

I think you're seeing something that isn't there. Until your post I had never seen anyone claim MS only had 4 exclusives.

OT this E3 is huge for MS , it's where we find out if this new message is just better PR through saying what people want to hear or if they have genuinely changed course.

Until then "it's all about the games guys, honest" is just empty words.

I think the Xbox is gonna be a wonderful console to own just like the Xbox and Xbox 360. Their message was just as bad as it gets at the beginning but their actions have been pretty damn good and with the regime change it will only get better.

How exactly are the last few years of the 360's lifecycle ( when Matrick ran the division) "telling" for what to expect now that Spencer is running it?

I can't help but feel that this guy is just trying to fix XBO image by saying what everyone want to hear its like he is being stressed from higher up to keep repeating "games" word every time anyone ask him something. Talk is cheap

When he doesn't mention "games", people question why he didn't. Of course he's trying to fix their image, that's his job.

They funded it? Ah, I remember hearing talk about how Titanfall 2 was definitely gonna be on PS4, and figured it was just a moneyhat. Sorry if I'm mistaken.

They basically co-funded it and as a return, it was always gonna be a timed console exclusive on Xbox platforms. Microsoft then made a late deal with EA regarding "full" exclusivity which Respawn apparently weren't involved in.

Because, brace yourself, the decisions made by the Xbox division were not solely coming from Don Mattrick.
Phil Spencer was backing the DRM stance just as hard back before the 180, they follow whatever direction the Xbox team is heading. It's naive to think a company is going to do a complete reverse of every policy simply by appointing a new head.

Funding exclusives, ala Bayonetta 2, where it just wouldn't have happened, is good. Buying exclusives, ala Titanfall, is not.

Wasn't there a thread recently that said something about if Microsoft didn't jump in (pun intended) then Titanfall wouldn't have been a thing ? I could be wrong though.

Funny how some complain about Spencer talking in a interview.
Spencer has proven himself for not only blowing smoke. Gears IP bought and Killer Instinct brought back are two solid examples.

And when he says this years E3 will be games, games and games, then I believe him.

I think you're seeing something that isn't there. Until your post I had never seen anyone claim MS only had 4 exclusives.

This is the internet, everything has been done before.

You expected Phil to go against what was happening. At the end of the day he still needs to do his job. All of this is irrelevant now since they changed those policies and are under new leadership.

He ran their first party studios.

He didn't have as much power as now.

That's an odd way of thinking seeing how Sony pretty much changed their approach to consoles after Kutaragi was no longer running the show. But the Box division will be exactly the same as with Matrick?

Saying and doing are two different things. It might sound harsh, but "talk is cheap" really is the kind of cautious stance I can take right now. I want something to impress me, something solid, something that will make me want an Xbox One beyond a reasonable doubt. They have to sell me on it, and E3 will be their big chance. Come on Microsoft, bring your A-game, and make me perk up my ears. Show me, and I'll start to listen, but until then I'll be somewhat cautious and skeptical. I won't buy something based on promises.

Agreed. Actions speak louder than words, after all. Don't just prove this to us by talking about it, prove what you've been saying to us by showing it.

I'll just wait & see if he lives up to those words.

So much fail in so few words.

People are going to be super disappointed this E3. There's no way Spencer has had a fighting chance to do anything substantial as head of Xbox in the few months he's been in the position. The rhetoric will be very different this E3, but I doubt we will see anything meaningful in terms of changes or products before the next few years.

True, products will be the same, the portfolio of games in development hasn't changed since he stepped up (he was already responsible for that anyway before he became Head of Xbox). I disagree that certain massive "emergency decisions" such as a price drop or announcing a Kinect-less SKU aren't possible in time for E3, though. They really have to deliver on all fronts in that press conference, and Phil knows that (and he seems to have a strong backing by Nadella).
