Donald Sterling (slum lord and LA Clippers Owner).. yeah, still a racist scum bag

It's tough. I'm not a lawyer, or know all the exact issues Silver is going to be facing from the opposition.

From my understanding he can banish him from day to day operations, kind of like what they did with Steinbrenner years ago, or McCourt. That would be the quick fix. Then with support from the league owners, I'm sure they can force the hand beginning a transfer of ownership. Some owners may be skeptical, because they would fear a incident of varying degree may result in their disposal just as quick.

Someone summed it up before stating that Silver essentially works for Sterling. It's not a simple task at hand.

If they can prove he is a liability to the image and NBA as a organization and his actions threaten the profits of the organization they can force him out legally can't they?

More like behavior that is unbecoming of a person. Period.

Yah, I think that goes without saying.

I honestly don't think it is going to be so easy. Only reason I brought it up is due to the fact that it is being said on every news station out there.

Force him to resign, Take away his ownership, Force him to sell the team, etc. People say this stuff, but they never explain how it is even possible. He bought the team for something like 15 million dollars, I would wager it is worth well over 500 million now. Who is going to pay him that money if they just 'remove' him.

Great article, thanks.

Yah, I'm not seeing how this is going to be possible for the NBA. Each instance that is referenced deals with additional issues, typically dealing with financial issues. Simply removing someone due to behavior that is unbecoming of an owner is not going to work. It would set a huge precedent, one that I don't think they want to make.

You have a new commissioner that is already facing a issue that could be a cornerstone of his legacy for however long it lasts.
A issue that has been a reoccurring problem for years with nothing done about it.
Now though he has the perfect storm to make it happen: Public, Media and Organizational support

If there is anyway he can get this dirt bag out he is going to take it.

Either way Sterling is going to be ostracized from the NBA community - free agency, trades, you name it. I feel really sorry for the entire Clippers organization cuz the franchise is going to totally cave in with Sterling at the helm if the NBA allows him to continue.

Again, I believe all of the owners have to sign off on something like that. Even using that argument as a plateau, Sterling's lawyers are going to have a field day.

From the link being passed around, financials are usually the primary issue when it comes to these type of situations. Racist scumbag owners have been around for a very long time. This would be setting a new precedent.

There may not be a way to directly get rid of him though. There are a lot of owners in the NBA who aren't exactly model citizens and I'm sure they don't want to set a precedent that the NBA can get rid of owners based on things they say.

Marge Schott says hi. I guess for the NBA it might be precedent but an owner of a sports team has certainly be pressured to sell the team. MLB even suspended her from baseball for the 2 years prior. NBA is going to look toothless if they don't follow suit.

Yeah proving he is a financial liability does seem incredibly difficult.

Hmmm good point

Marge Schott says hi.

She was never booted from MLB. If she had the bank, she would have been there until death. Problem with her is she was in a partnership when they simply lost interest due to her shit, she just followed suit.

It should be noted that Sterling is one of the rare sole owners remaining in professional sports.

A departing commissioner would have had more leeway to push for heavier punishment of Sterling. Stern, though he turned a blind eye to Sterling for years, would have had a chance to bolster his legacy on the way out.

A brand new commissioner like Silver won't be burning any bridges with his bosses on the first day of the job. I expect pointless fines and mandated sensitivity training or something.

Yes she was. She was booted for 2 years.

I already mentioned this. You can be the owner of a team but lose control of day to day operations. The NBA might have a different structure concerning this, but it seems plausible. It doesn't solve the problem, but it's the quick fix that might hold people off until they figure something out.

That scenario isn't remotely in the same stratosphere as this one.

They could banish Sterling for life and he would still make all the profit.

Oh man, some of those Marge Schott comments I'm reading in Wikipedia. She was like the old school of the old school bigots.

Yea she was awful.

Oh, I get you. The Schott situation is just as close as I can think of regarding this sort of behavior and again it would be a really good first step in this scenario. Even if it's a bit superficial.

so what if sterling is a racist, this is america, he has that right.

He's an employer. He absolutely does not have the right to be racist to his employees or create a threatening workplace.

Now so far he has mostly kept this out of the workplace, but as more evidence surfaces, it's becoming clear he thinks of his black players as property, and that's even ignoring the "beautiful black bodies" tour of the shower room.

what in the blue is a Clipper? what are they named after? Barbers?

It's a type of ship.

Clipper: Nautical. Also called a clipper ship. A sailing ship built and rigged for speed, esp. a type of three-masted ship with a fast hull form and a lofty rig, built in the U.S. from c1845, and in Great Britain from a later date, until c1870, and used in trades in which speed was more important than cargo capacity.

Though it seems I'm a little late..

Look, what he said was absolutely offensive and wrong. With that said I think you are stretching this to a ridiculous length. He isn't discriminating against black players, he has a personal stupid belief. He can think they are property, he can hate them, none of that is illegal. As absurd as that sounds.

He has discriminated against people in the housing complex he owns so yes what he said is important especially if he rents out other properties he owns.

He's got a mistress. Rochelle Sterling ( the wife) is actually the one that's suing her for embezzlement, not Donald.

and the wife is suing the girlfriend because of how much he spent on her.

edit: beaten!

Hahaha, this guy is such a creep.
Because of one of the largest housing discrimination cases in US history.

I mean, yeah, racism = bad, but everyone would be doing themselves a favor if they kept tabs on stuff like massive housing discrimination and the domino effect it causes.

Alright, thanks. I will do my due diligence. Find it odd that anyone would play or associate with him if these transgressions are so well known.

Creating a hostile work environment based on race is in fact against the law.

Walking an unqualified female employee into the locker room to admire their "beautiful black bodies" easily fits that definition. And that's only one example we know of

Limited options, lots of money and a desire to compete will do that. But I think an unspoken assumption that a lot of wealthy white owners don't have a high regard for you either is also part of it.

Being black is a constant test of doing an personal analysis on whether or not you want to poke the bear of racism in many facets of everyday life.

So my dad supported the Chick-Fil-A CEO's anti gay-marriage comments due to his right to free speech but is completely for kicking out the LA Clipper's owner for his racist comments. Hmm. I think there is a discrepancy here.

Note: some clippers were used as slave ships.

I know a lot of old heads who would kick someone's ass for being racist, and in the same day bash someone for being gay.

The is more appropriate for when they were originally located in San Diego, with its ports and naval bases.

At first I thought Sterling wife's is death, but he has a wife and a girlfriend? No one thinks that an issue?

He needs to go. They need to find a way to force him to sell. Who knows if they will... but they need to.

At least "Clippers" is a reference to something in that state, though! For the Lakers, they're half a continent off, and didn't change their name anyway...

Sterling being an adulterer is between himself, his wife, Stiviano, and whoever else may have been involved. It's irrelevant to the issue of his racism and it's fine if it is what ultimately resulted in the release of this tape. It's a delivery method for us. Nothing more. That said...

The wife doesn't seem to, as long as they give all the stuff back.

I have a hard time imagining Mrs. Sterling filed that suit out of anything other than spite.

That guy was one of the worst owners in sports without his racial beliefs.. It's mainly news now because it was caught on tape.. But it has been known for years that this guy was a fucking racist scumbag POS.. How it took this long is beyond me.. You would think the incident with Marge Schott would have never let this come to fruition..
