Donald Sterling (slum lord and LA Clippers Owner).. yeah, still a racist scum bag

Can you just imagine the outrage if Sterling was forced to sell the Clippers, and the team ended up getting moved?

Not only would Sterling be cemented as the worst sports owner in world sports history (with no competition from anyone else)... hee might get exiled from the state of California!

There's no way the NBA has any intention of moving a team out of LA.

He owns like 2.3% of the Dodgers. The media really makes people think he owns it completely. Same with Jay-Z last year when he bought 0.1608% of the Nets, suddenly it was Jay-Z's team.
That's what brand ambassadors are for. If people want to believe Magic owns the Dodgers 100%, so be it. TMZ reports that Magic and his group want to buy so there's no discrepancy on their end... The blogs are another story.

If it is sold, it'll very likely go to Magic's group. The only question is whether or not Sterling will sell. I really hope he does, but he's apparently extremely stubborn. I wouldn't be thrilled with him simply passing the team on to his soon-to-be-ex-wife or his son-in-law, as I doubt they're much better and would still likely be insufficient for retaining the players, coach, and sponsors.

Even though they're still married, they have been separated for years now. I don't think she actually said that he wasn't racist, just that she herself wasn't racist.

Yeah that's what I found strange about the statement. Usually those associated with the guilty party will be either remorseful simply because of association or come to individual's defense. She did neither. It was just "I'm not racist and neither is my family" over and over.

Doc rivers conference call has been airing living on espn.

Only thing I really noticed is that apparently sterling has tried to talk to rivers since this went down, and rivers has ignored it.

So apparently the NBA cannot take over a team unless the team is in financial distress. So really the only option is to hope that the 29 other owners pressure Sterling to boot himself out of ownership.

Guess that's not gonna happen then. I'll support Griffin on the next team he goes to but fuck the Clips.

Who recorded this phone call? TMZ doesn't say how they obtained it.
I read the old man had the chick record all their conversation because his memory's shot and asked her to for reference.

I really don't see how he keeps the team. He'll face too much pressure from the league, the owners, sponsors, and the players (who will threaten not to sign). That team is probably worth $500 mill more now than when he paid. He'll walk away.

Yeah, he'll stand to lose a lot of money if he doesn't sell very soon.

Interesting.

It definitely sounded like she was baiting him though. She kept leading him in a direction where he would say something offensive. I'm guessing she leaked this.

I never understood why the two teams share the same arena and city.

Same city? Ok, but the same arena just seems lazy.

They should move to Seattle.

Best start is for sponsors to start abandoning the clippers. All major sponsors. Then for major free agents to avoid them/refuse to sign with them and publicly state that.

You would rather them waste more public funds and resources to build another arena? It works out and it's more efficient. Especially since they use public tax revenue. I wish they would force the NFL teams in Florida to use the same stadium. No one cares about them anyway. :p

someone must have leaked it to them

but who? WHO? WHO COULD BE BEHIND THIS ALL?

That's already happening. CarMax and Virgin America have ended their sponsorships. State Farm, Kia and Red Bull have suspended sponsorship and advertisements. Well, tomorrow is going to be really interesting.

Good. I wouldn't accept Sterling's phone calls either. Fuck him.

That said, this asshole's transgressions have been public knowledge for over a decade. For the new guys in the league like DeAndre Jordan, I'm more inclined to give them a pass. But Doc chose to go to the Clippers despite Sterling's blatant racism being on record for anyone to see. I can't get too worked up about his hypocrisy being exposed. Should have just used them to leverage a better deal elsewhere.

He don't wanna have that dude on his team..must confuse the peoples..

Not to turn this into a Democrat or Republican thing, but there are plenty of racists Democrats out there too. It's just done differently on that side.

A big reason why I don't side with any political party.

Ok..

I think the point he's making is Rush Limbaugh is a dumbfuck.

The sponsors are really dropping like flies now. I can't believe it, are we finally going to get a new owner?

Here's the current list of sponsors who have pulled out that I know of:
Chumash Casino
CarMax
Virgin America
Kia
State Farm
Sprint
Red Bull
AquaHydrate

I've heard Amtrak and Anheuser-Busch have also pulled out. I would be almost as excited about a new owner as I would winning the NBA championship.

This is the one thing about this story that is sort of bugging me to be completely honest. The typical fake outrage from the media is one thing. This is not even the worst, most racist thing Sterling has done but where were the calls from Skip and Stephen A., or the rest of the talk radio mouthpieces, for Sterling to be suspended before? They had the power to make this a story a long time ago and chose not to. Same with the older heads in the NBA, which includes Doc Rivers and, to some extent, Chris Paul. 2 minutes on Google is all it takes to realize, long before this story broke, that Sterling is a deplorable human being, yet that didn't stop Doc from taking his money and, on top of that, he had the nerve today to claim he had no idea Sterling was like this. Give me a break. Same thing with Paul. I keep saying it but dude is the President of the Players Union. That job comes with responsibility and he could have set an example by choosing not to resign with Sterling this past summer and take his money but chose not to. And now he wants to turn his shirt inside out and wear a black arm band?

It's almost like the story getting out has embarrassed not only Sterling (rightfully so) but also everyone else in the media and the rest of the people around the league (like Doc) who kept this kind of stuff quiet until TMZ broke a story that could no longer be ignored.

There are probably racist independents too. Now you're one of them!!

if both teams share the Staples Center, how in the blue hell do you decide to become a Clippers fan over a Lakers fan?

Chosing between Dogers and Angels, yeah okay I understand that.
Choising between LA Kings and the Ducks, okay I get that.

But Clippers and Lakers? pfff LOL, that I dont get

Do I support a rapist or a racist? Hmm.

If he wants money he'll walk. The value of the clips is at an all time high. That coupled with all the dropping sponsors, moving quickly seems like it would be financially sound.

Clipper fans were always weird. Especially during the 80's and 2000's when they were straight garbage and the Lakers were on top. Like, what kid thought it was a good idea to root for the Clippers during the Showtime era. You're right, there really wasn't geographical boundaries either. The Kings and the Dodgers play in Los Angeles, while Angels and Ducks are in Anaheim. The only thing I can think of was the Lakers played in Inglewood at the Forum and the Clippers played at the Sport's Arena in Downtown. However, it's not like they are that far from each other. Maybe a 20 minute drive in no traffic.

I know a few Clippers fans that have been there since the San Diego Clippers days. They just support a team they pretty much always have or grew up with. Uhh and not to say that you can call all those people weird, You can find that in any sport.

Agreed, this echoes my sentiments exactly.

I get the impression they were fine with taking his money as long as the racist shit was "behind the scenes." This recent implosion seemed like a good excuse to take a public stance.

But you're right about Paul. He knew what Sterling was and re-signed. Ultimately it makes the entire team look bad, but they really could have changed perceptions if they bocotted yesterday. Force the NBA's hand.
