So the person who made the best comment? Kareem

Edit: nm, Bomani Jones wow just wow.

I agree with everything bomani said except for why when says that the outrage people have for what donald sterling said is fake. A lot of people have never heard of donald sterling till this past week. And a lot of people didn't know about his racist past either so I don't think people's outrage right now should be any less authentic than if it was outrage for what donald sterling has done in the past.

Ok, that is good. He makes a lot of sense. I just think you have to be careful of telling people they "shouldn't care" because they didn't before. We're all complicit in this shit...some to a greater degree. But, again, he speaks truth.

Exactly. He seems mad that tmz is getting the credit rather than his article from 9 years ago. He even said he had more hits this weekend than he did when it first got published. But if the goal is to get the message out. It shouldn't matter how people got to reading his article he should be happy they even read it because they could have just stuck to the tmz report to be honest.

I looked at it like he was specifically addressing those who were aware of Sterling's attitudes and practices back then and just let it rock because of the money. Obviously your average person, especially one who doesn't follow basketball, may not have been aware of it. However, those in the league and associated with it who did know and did nothing before may come off as insincere when they voice their feelings over the new revelations, which aren't exactly new.

He's mad that the more malignant demonstration of racism from this dude with his housing discrimination case got less play than this new stuff. The dude was refusing to rent apartments to Hispanics and black people because Latinos "smoke, drink and just hang around the building" and black people "stink and attracted vermin"
That's more offensive than anything in these latest recordings. The motherfucker was effecting people's livelihoods with that shit.

You're missing the point. He's not "mad". To him it is alarming that when you highlight racist practices you get crickets but when someone ends up in a sound byte using a slur or saying something racist that's what results in the tmz clip and faux outrage.

And he backed it up. Talked about the effects of housing discrimination.

team owners must abide by the league's standards, just because you own something doesn't give you carte-blanche to say and do whatever. He is part of major sports league, the NBA in the end carries allot of weight

IMO, LA doesn't need two franchises, sell the Clipper and move them to Seattle and be done with it.

the Clippers name is tarnished and plus if you live in LA, why would you chose Clippers over Lakers? To be unconvetional hipsters to be against the Lakers?

Well the clippers are the better team right now so many LA people are jumping on the bandwagon :-p

I like the idea of moving them to Seattle a lot

Yeah, why would I root for a team owned by a bigot when I can root for a team that idolizes a rapist.

Lebatard is an idiot who got famous because LeBron decided to go to Miami or no one would have known about random guy from the Miami Herald. .... Jones I do like.

Perhaps you hadn't heard of Lebatard before his "rant" but it also means you don't know anything about him. He has his good points and his bad points but an idiot he is most definitely not.

Yeah, it is alarming. I think a lot of people found it somewhat funny that the old rich white guy was caught saying something so blatantly racist to his non-white mistress, especially as the owner of a basketball team. Then I hear the background and it turns into real questions of why this horrible human being still owned a team, and why did David Stern basically hand him Chris Paul. The background story is much more disturbing than anything he said, and yes, it's bothersome that the original piece of him discriminating against minorities didn't blow up the way this has. There should have been national outrage at this guy a long time ago.

Exactly. He's trying to highlight the issue with the media and people wanting their news in sound bytes and tweets. Wanting their news to be salacious and scandalous and ripped worthy of tabloid outlets like tmz. A housing discrimination lawsuit isn't sexy enough. A mistress secretly recording a old racist windbag is.

This most recent scandal might not even be one of the top 5 most racist things Sterling has ever done yet it's the one getting the most play and outrage. It's great that it's getting out one way or another and he's being exposed, but at some point shouldn't we ask why that is?

I might just be a cynical prick, but I can't imagine there's anyone in the sports world more desperate for black community validation than Skip Bayless.

DAMN. Bomani Jones going HAM.

He's not telling people not to care, he's saying don't put on airs of acting about racism but when real racism happens they're nowhere to be found. He can stand less support on issues of the people who do step up are giving real support. It helps no one by doing this fake meaningless "stands" against racism but when there's opportunities to make a real impact on racism no one is there and it falls by the waist side.

Changing the Clips to the Sonics is such a sexy idea.

Not gonna happen. There is way more money to be made in LA than Seattle. Look at the tv deals the Dodgers and lakers landed. Any new owner is going to have that in mind when they buy the team and be counting down the days until the current tv deal expires.

When is the announcement supposed to come out?

quick edit: oh 2pm, so my sports drama of the day starts before champions league, how exciting

I think he's right. Sterling is a product of prevalent racism in America. It's the majority whites that don't want to live with blacks that cause slightly more unscrupulous people like Sterling to get rich by giving the majority what they want.

But it's so much easier to point at 1 person and blame him for everything. It's the same thing in politics. You know that we elect those people, right? And I think the same way the vast majority of the time. :(

Quick question: Do you believe someone dropped the ball on the stories from years past not getting enough attention? If yes, then who?

Being honest, I've always heard of him being a douche and racist, especially on GAF. I've been absorbing news since 1997, at least. I really feel like I missed the entire story back in 2009. I'm actually wondering how it slipped past me. About 300 days a year, I'm checking ESPN.com, CNN.com and Philly.com. So, I can't remember why it wasn't a big story. 2009 is not that long ago. WTF were we even talking about back then besides the economy?

Can he just make it a two for one and ban Jim Buss too?

Early rumors point to Jim Buss being allowed to give Kobe more money. Cuz...reasons.

ESPN and their peers in the media dropped the ball, as did Stern and the rest of the NBA, which includes players, for not speaking up about this because it didn't affect them. Now it's out in the open so it's convenient to be outraged because you are just going along with popular opinion over what amounts to a tabloid story.

Wouldn't be the first time the players looked the other way to cash a check.

I guess that's where I can start to accept the argument of a moral failure. Not enough response unless it directly impacts them.
Michael Joseph Jackson..
Oh yeah. Still remember where I was when I got the news.

Wasn't he about to receive an award from the NAACP before all this broke? I haven't followed this closely so you can correct me, but I would assume that Sterling got off the hook by buying the right people off.

I knew about his past from reading Simmons and living in an NBA city that loathes the Clippers for their flopping and sorry gamesmanship.

that's exactly it. everyone was worried about the economy, there was no time to worry about other shit

Hopefully Silver announces tomorrow that they are starting this process. The sale of the team could be crazy though. It'll be like when McCourt had to sell the Dodgers. I can easily see the Clippers going for near a billion dollars.

I doubt they'll do this. Its kinda hard to get rid of recalcitrant owners in sports leagues (otherise Davis would have been gone along time ago), because they know where all the bodies are buried.

Really thought he would get off with a lot less. Still I wanted him to get voted out and forced to sell the team. Every big name player needs to walk once their contracts are up to stick to Sterling even more.
