US PSN: Golden Week Sale Celebrates Japanese Games

Is Chrono Cross worth? Don't really mind if it's different from Chrono Trigger, I'm talking more about gameplay, story, characters, etc.

it was a disappointment but if you're curious how a sequel can go so wrong, check it out. the music is amazing but you can always get the OST by itself instead.

I'm going to get hate for this, but outside of its soundtrack it's an entirely average RPG. Boring characters, boring plot, boring and slow battles. And CHA.

Sadly no. I'm hoping the Vita version comes stateside and fixes that. orz

No. People hope it'll show up for Ayesha Vita if we see it, but the most we could've even had was a free DLC. Though why that wasn't done... I wonder if they screwed up the contracts or something.

Well okay. Ayesha was actually the one I was really interested in, but I suppose I can amuse myself with Totori Plus for now while I wait for Ayesha Plus.

To this day, I regard it as a masterpiece. I actually enjoyed playing it as much, if not more than FF7, 8, and 9.

And this is usually how it goes with games like this. Some hate it, some love it.

Ok I picked up DBZ BoG Vita and might get Vagrant Story, I dont even know if Ill like it but what ever. Chrono Trigger I'll get the DS version because I want to play it for some reason really bad right now for the first time and want the best version. Not really interested in much else I guess.

As you should be able to see the game's quite divisive. I'd say it's a pretty good game on its own, but one of the most disappointing sequels I've ever played. But it's less like you expected a great hamburger and only got a good one, it's like you expect a great hamburger but got served a plate of spaghetti. Maybe that spaghetti's fantastic, and with meatballs it gave you your beef, but it wasn't what you had been wanting this whole time.

At any rate at $3.49 just grab it and come to your own conclusion, especially as you're not sweating how different it is from Chrono Trigger.

Alright guys, thanks, I'll try to get it before the sale ends. I mean, I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII so I'm willing to give this a try.

Just don't expect the graphical quality of FFXIII from Cross. You have to understand the capabilities of the PS1, so hopefully you don't find the graphics TOO jarring. It's a nice game.

I know Chrono Cross is a very hit or miss game. Perhaps it depends on if you played Chrono Trigger prior, but I enjoyed the first few hours I got to play of Cross and had only played a few hours of Trigger before it. The 3D outing obviously plays differently than its 2D predecessor, but if you enjoyed Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and/or IX, you might enjoy it. Again, I haven't fully beaten either one, but I can't say much bad about them, aside from obviously the 3D graphics in Cross are understandably dated and the game is a bit slower.

Whenever I try to remember Chrono Cross I get really fuzzy. Like the game never really existed or something. It's a weird experience.

...

Guess I'd better pick up Persona. I borrowed a friend's copy and got bored with it around the time you go to a
bath dungeon
or something? But I guess I should give it another shot. It just seems like so much stuff to manage, it's a little nerve wracking.

It's part of why I'm more inclined to recommend jumping in with Ayesha. That and Escha & Logy seem to be free of the fan service and other odd bits, and while it doesn't sound like the Arland games get as bad as some stuff out there it's enough to give pause.
.

Neither Totori or Meruru are really that bad at all in terms of this. They're actually kind of time compared to most of the shit out there nowadays, which is why it sucks to see them lumped with low quality, creepier content like Neptunia. They're highly sugary but not overly fanservice-y, certainly not to a thread full of people suggesting P4. I mean they have a few moments of "...why"? but you just cannot escape that in any Japanese RPG anymore.

They're some of the only console (or non-Blizzard lately, honestly) games my wife plays and she started with Totori. If you have a taste for crafting/gathering in games and can get over the frills and saccharine, they're legitimately high quality little alternative RPGs.

Just bought $80+ worth of games. Gonna skip the Vita Atelier games. The discounts aren't deep enough. The rest should be cheap good fun. I can also keep my ToS LE sealed for resale, I guess.

Thank whoever I need to thank for the descision to go dual audio tracks on Atelier Totori. I am only an hour in but I was about to cut my losses and chalk it down as a bad purchase. But then, I switched it from dub to subs and I just started enjoying it. The dub isn't throw up in my mouth bad or anything, but it's not decent... So, the best I can do is switch it to a language I don't understand and start reading the words instead of letting the characters do that for me. Next up, Tales of Symphonia, Chrono _______, and Tactics Ogre maybe. Damn. And I wanted to buy Child of Light. But Child of Light isn't on sale and these are. Sorry, me.

Really?

Totori JP voice are like scratches on a chalkboard.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to get Danganronpa at this price. It isn't as good of a discount and the sequel is out in September. I am sure that it will go on sale again sometimes in the future, before or after the release of the sequel. It can be on a much better discount or get a price drop. Just wait it out for now, unless you really want to play it now.

It's part why I said "give pause", though Rorona's mentor in her game gave some very serious pause at times from what little I played.

I think part of the problem though is regardless of how innocent these games actually are Gust themselves HAVE gotten pretty low. Namely Ar Tonelico III, that one got a lot of crap for some of the stuff it had, so even if it's unfair to Atelier to lump them with the likes of Neptunia it's not the same story for Ar Tonelico III.

Sorry If these have been asked but would you think metal gear solid will ever be on PS+ and tactics ogre ever go cheaper? I want to buy them but money is a bit tight right now...

Metal Gear Rising? Possible, may've even hit Europe, though I don't see the classic MGS hitting Plus. Tactics Ogre could as well, though I'm not sure it'll get much cheaper outside of the Plus angle.

Tactics has been the cheapest as it is. It won't go below that. Half the price is the best we usually get for these old school PSP games.

I asked about MGS HD and got no response. I do expect it to see on US PS+ in the future since it has already been released on EU PS+ but i still couldn't resist.

Hmmm...I guess just tactics ogre then. Thanks guys!

A note to everyone getting Vagrant Story:

It's a great game with a very literate story and memorable characters. It's also unlike anything I've ever played. It is not the friendliest game out there though. It has a lot of rough spots that I encourage you to play past. Don't feel bad looking up a FAQ on how to play, since the battle system quickly becomes counter-intuitive.

Some tips:

1. Learn to distinguish the enemy weaknesses. Always carry at least three or four weapons and switch them up based on what you fight. Make sure to learn the way that weapons come to favor certain enemy types so that you don't end up with a weapon that isn't good at killing anything.

2. Manage Risk. If you are only doing one point of damage to an enemy with every hit, you are doing it wrong. Keep your Risk down and combo wisely.

3. Don't panic if your weapons builds aren't great towards the end. Eventually you get gems to slot in that provide major elemental boosts.

4. Spellbooks are free to use, but consumed after one use. You do learn the spell after you use the book, however. Don't be afraid of using a spellbook if you think it may be useful. Make sure to use your spellbooks by the end, because New Game+ carries over spells but not spellbooks.

Also, it may genuinely be a good idea to just go to hell with it and restart after something like ten hours of gameplay. You learn the system better, and you can use that to better build yourself up earlier on.

Haul ended up being as such:
Symphonia Chronicles
Armored Core Verdict Day
Zone of The Enders
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story
Tactics Ogre
Atelier Totori

Damn.

it's been tradition ever since Rorona. It's like a curse.

Any Japanese VA who gets cast as the female lead will bring their F game. They're all good VAs otherwise.
Yeah, Escha kinda got on my nerves from what little I played of that. Really just emphasizes that switching to JP is more for not understanding what they say, and there's only so much that can do; I've likened switching to a foreign language is like smearing vaseline across a screen in that you can still discern the basic form of what's on display, and in that case it's like something that looks terrible even when blurry as hell.

The battles are prob twice as fast as FF VIII and IX, so I hope we. So I hope we can share are hate of those! ;)

I forgive Chrono Cross

I agree with you on this...I picked it up last summer but never really went back to it. I definitely see the attraction to the game, though. The problem for me was that I felt like there was a "correct" way to play. I started second guessing all my decisions and became a bit overwhelmed... not fun. I will dive back in this summer with a more relaxed attitude.

I'm currently going through P3P and I can't help but find the strategy portion lacking as it's all about just finding the element the enemy is weak against and just exploiting that a thousand times over. Is there more to it than that that I'm missing?

I dunno, I thought the English localisation was done pretty well in Totori.

Gotta say, while I got Totori not long before this sale at full price, at least I've been playing the hell out of it, so I don't regret it too much. :p

I dunno, I thought the English localisation was done pretty well in Totori.
I feel its less localization quality and more that this kind of material, while nowhere near SO4 awful, can get grating without resorting to extreme alterations, and that isn't ideal at all.

Though I haven't gotten to Totori, just Rorona, Ayesha, and a little Escha & Logy.

Do you mean localisers trying to compensate for the cultural and language differences which has no direct translation between English and Japanese?

I'm usually more forgiving of that kind of stuff, because I know direct translations are not ideal at all.

Gonna buy ToSC to keep my CE sealed for the future.

Also gonna get DBZ Battle of Z for PS3. Anyone on here want to play that later tonight? I believe it's co-op vs CPU?

With that long list you might as well buy Meruru + as well. You're gonna want to play it right after you beat Totori...

More that the base material is bad, grating or can just get under your skin for whatever reason and nothing can change that which isn't a full on replacement of the original material. It happens sometimes, not something to hold against the localization team.

Fucking sold

Pro tip. I named all my weapons so I would know what they were meant for:

Beast Killer
Ghost Buster (of course)
Dragon Driver

I think there are 8 types. At first, i didn't want to commit to that type of system because it was so different at the time. A lot more games employ that now, to a degree. Who doesn't have 5-6 weapons in the Souls games that they'll switch out based on enemy type, move base, stats, etc.

Ah right, fair enough.
