Are there any affordable gaming laptops? (getting rid of PS3)

Hi all. This is my first thread. I hate making threads because I'm not a serious message board user in general anymore. Takes too much time, produces too much drama. :D

Anyway, on to the topic. I'm getting rid of my PS3 in light of not being able to play this $60 peice of plastic some might call GTA IV. The most I can do is hurry and skip the intro cutscene and get in a few meters of driving OR hop out of the car and take a few steps. So, enough about GTA IV. It makes me too upset to even think about. I just wanted to let you know what inspired this idea.

So, I've already been wanting to get a laptop so I can get back into making music. It's a love of mine and that would be my number one purpose for getting any kind of computer at at because well...I hate computers. I've always been the guy who has to troubleshoot the family computer and try to fix any problems or clean viruses, etc. A few years of that and I went mad. But at least no one else would be using my laptop.

The question is: What is the cheapest gaming laptop I could get away with for today's games? I'd appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction because I've never been into PC gaming unless you count SOLDAT, Gunz The Duel......Solitaire and Freecell. :lol

Depending on the figures you guys throw out I might go curl up in a corner; just me and my wallet. :lol

OP got pissed likes making music and wants a laptop to do so.

Needs advice on what Laptop to get.

What's not to get?

What...? Does your GTA crash?

Just pull out your network cable...

Your not going to be able to get a gaming laptop if you sell your PS3. You will need some more money probably about $1000 more, I hate to be the one to tell you. Your better off waiting for a PS3 GTA IV patch.

What are you getting at with this useless reply? You trying to start shit with me? You trolling? Should I hav......never mind. :lol

In my short time here I've learned that no thread goes without the unavoidable first few posts of clowning. So......I'm not mad at you.

Have you been thinking about getting rid of it before or is it just this game? If your PS3 has other games you like playing, don't get rid of it because of GTA IV. But if you really want a computer for music and you can't get it any other way...

There's bound to be a patch for GTA4 coming imminently. You could just wait a week, and probably have the patch before you'd have a new laptop anyway.

A post like that isn't going to help your cause.

I'd wait a little bit on either a patch/fix to be made available... if anything, the prices on laptops drop at a moments notice, so you could save yourself some change if you wait it out a little... maybe play some other games?

Is your PS3 locking up everytime you boot the game? I have only locked up once since the game launched, so maybe you should try some of the fixes (re-installing the data or disconnect your internet connection) so you can play through the game a little before you decide to sell, etc...

I'm all for PC gaming, but do you really want to rid yourself of PS3? Cause it'd probably be significantly cheaper to just trade in the 60GB to EB and buy a 40GB and a normal laptop.

Yea I realize they're pretty expensive. I was just wondering how low I could go as far as price. I know I can't swap a PS3 for a gaming laptop.

Also, that fix did nothing for me because I have the OTHER issue. Some people can play for 10 hours and then run into a freeze. I CAN'T PLAY IT. So, I've tried every single thing you can imagine. I turned off the internet connection, reset my setting, etc. etc. etc. Until last night I said screw it and I completely restored my system, formatting the HDD and everything. Still didn't work. I'm done trying.

I've never had problems with any other game. COD4 works perfectly. It's just that I was so looking forward to playing GTA IV that this has all been really dissapointing for me.

If you want up-to-date high quality gaming, you're better off getting a desktop. Or even building one. It'd be a lot more affordable for a start.

Laptops are great for the convenience. Watch rich media anytime, anywhere, have it on hand for quick convenient browsing, social networking / messaging, doing office-type things with it... you can probably do good gaming on a nice laptop too, but for me personally, I'd much rather do that on a nice large monitor or TV.

Laptops are awesome for recording music though. If you got yourself a decent external sound card / board, MIDI interface, and some nice software -- you could walk around jacking or mic'ing up anything that makes noise. You can perform live with them.

So I say - if the music is more important, you could get yourself some gear and come back to the gaming later on down the line. I'd wager that if you got some good hardware and software for that purpose, it'd eat into your gaming time anyway.

It'd be pretty stupid to get a crappier ps3 just to be able to pay gtaIV and probably have to pay out on top of it.

Well, kinda. I don't know. For me, for SOME reason the PS3 hasn't been quite as fun for me as the PS2 was. By the way, I've been mainly a Playstation gaming since forever. I had a N64 once...Oh and I had a Wii for a little while. But, maybe I'm just growing out of gaming but NOT COMPLETELY. I think I still want to play games here and there and that's why I thought it would be a good idea to get a laptop capable of gaming.

@h3ro. Don't worry about me man. I was just having a little fun with the guy. I don't know if he was trying to stir anything up but I don't care. I wasn't serious. :D

Maybe it is your game disc? Try swapping that and maybe it could help...

oh, batbeg, backseat modding isn't looked too greatly on either, let the mods do the moderating.

At least wait for the first patch. It sounds like you are overeacting. Or have you tried returning the disk? Perhaps it is a bad disk.

Gaming Laptop = :lol
Affordable Gaming Laptop = :lol :lol :lol

Seriously though, It depends on what games you want to play on it. Music programs don't take too much power. The thing there is really to have plenty of memory.

So, what games were you thinking of and how well do you want to run them?

Or if you really want to play GTA4, buy a 360.

But about the gaming laptop: any reason why you want a laptop instead of a desktop? There's only one situation where I can recommend getting a powerhouse gaming laptop, and that's if you split your time between multiple far-away locations and still want to get some serious PC gaming. I was in that situation because I was criss crossing the country every few months, and shipping a desktop back and forth didn't make any sense. Any other situation though, I can't recommend a gaming laptop over a desktop.

I bought this laptop back in March:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114445

TOSHIBA Satellite X205-S9800 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T5550(1.83GHz) 17.0" Wide XGA+ 2GB Memory DDR2 667 250GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT

Its awesome for gaming, it will even play crysis. Its pretty damn big though, and so is the AC adapter. But for the price, its got quite a bit of features. The 8700m w/ 512mb of video memory really pushed it over the edge for me, I couldnt find anything but the 8600gs/gt in anything comparably priced.

Thanks for the reply (and thank everyone who replied with a relevant comment).

I kinda figured that was the case. I guess a desktop would be just fine aswell; BUT, I would at least want it to be somewhat portable and not super heavy, you know? If I can get a smallISH desktop then that would be great.

Possible Defective GTA IV BDs

Apparently there is some anecdotal evidence of people having issues with a certain pressing of the game. The code is on the backside of the BD and begins with A0 followed by a number.

FWIW, I have one that says A04 and have had one lockup on a launch 60GB NA PS3...

Try swapping it out and give it another shot...

No desktop is small my friend, thats why there called desktops.

Also, if depending on how often you'll be next to an outlet, most gaming laptops don't have such great battery life since they have components that take more energy to power.

There's a difference between backseat modding and telling someone they're being an idiot. Frankly people doing stuff like that are making more and more threads harder to bear, because they think they're so damn funny.

What a strange statement. Why would it need to be at all portable? It's meant to be stationary!

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. Mine says A03. Hmm. I guess it might be worth a shot to exchange it.

But, I'm still considering going for a PC (some of you have convinced me that a desktop is the way to go). Because, as I said, I've been wanting to get back into music.

So, I've appreciated all you guys' input. You've given me some options to consider. Thanks.

Hahaha sorry for not elaborating. What I meant was that I'd like the ability to (fairly) easily pack it up and travel with it.

I wouldn't get a gaming laptop if I were you. It seems as though you already have a laptop, right? You might as well just get a desktop then. I mean, you dealt with having a PS3, right? And you had to use some kind of display with that, right? So, a desktop should be fine too

Here are a couple:

Expensive price range:

Dell M1730 (Mobile 8800 GTX, Intel Core Duo Extreme Mobile Processor and excellent at home warranty support):

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1730?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Alienware Area-51 M15X (15 inch, 8800GTX, yadda, yadda):

http://www.alienware.com/product_de...L&from=DELLINT:m15xvert&source=DLL0004&disc=1

Alienware Area-51 m17x (17 inch, dual 8800 GTX):

Cheaper alternative:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...=01&srccode=cii_5766179&cpncode=12-48367282-2

...but your best bet is to buy or build a desktop, as it is much cheaper and allows you to upgrade versus the closed architecture of a laptop.

It's possible that I am. Though, I wouldn't call it overreacting. Because, this is a pretty bog fuckup on Rockstar's part. I have every right to be upset. Regardless, I'd like to think my consideration isn't just based on the GTA IV thing. I haven't been quite convinced this gen that I care about console gaming as much as I used to with PS2.

But, you know, I will try swaping this copy for a new one. If it works, I will sit down with the game, play it, and maybe it will PROVE that this whole idea of getting rid of the PS3 was just a result of me losing my head about the situation. Time will tell. Just know that I'm not going to do anything immediate or drastic. If this switch to PC is really an option for me then I will take my time and think it through.

Plus, most gaming laptops are not what I would classify as portable when they weigh 20lb and are 3 inches thick.

Maybe the OP should look at various versions of the Asus m70 as well..

Which is why I asked if he really wanted to get rid of it. If he liked the rest of the library and didn't buy it solely for GTA4 (but wants to play GTA4), it'd be a heck of a lot smarter than spending an absurd amount on a laptop (to get to PS3 level graphics).

It seems he's wised up and looking at desktops, so moot point. And I'll take a 40GB over a 60GB. Backwards compatibility doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Less heat being pumped out does.

I don't have a laptop. I have an old out-of-date *put, put* desktop that deserves to be shot in it's motherboard for stalling so often. It LITERALLY takes at least around 10 minutes from bootup to the point where I actually have any control over what it does. Until that 10-15 minutes passes, I'm at it's mercy. :lol

I planned on resetting it to factory defaults sometime soon.

Also, at the guys laughing at "affordable gaming laptop"....... I understand. :lol

Oh boy, that makes me nervous. I've got a launch 60gig with the A04 marking as well. I'm probably 12 hours in with no lockups so far. Now I'm going to be nervous when I play later today. I hope that patch comes soon.

take the money you get from the Ps3 and games and invest in a few nintendo Wiis. sell them on Ebay and profit. buy a gaming Pc.

Im serious.

No need to if you haven't had any issues... I'm sure a patch will take care of this issue once and for all. I haven't seen anyone describe the issue the OP is having though, I've heard of people having multiple lock-ups, but never heard not being able to start the game/only play for a few seconds prior to lockup at all...

Look, I have a XPS 1530 with 4 gigs ram:

http://www.dell.com/content/product...b_m1530?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~tab=bundlestab

This is a GREAT gaming laptop given the price.

I can run sup com at max settings with good frame rate.
I can run UE3 on max settings.
I can run Bioshock, everything on max.

I can run Crysis on cuban's config level 4, and get decent frame rate except on Paradise Lost and the Reckoning. By the way this pretty much looks as good as very High settings hahhaha. It doesnt run amazing, but it is perfectly playable, since I am currently playing it on delta with no probs.

Anyway, Im really impressed. Crysis on my laptop looks better than anything ive seen on consoles technically. Oh yeah, I am using vista 64 with direct x10

On mine it looks and runs better than this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEkXziDQMCw

oh yeah this cost me £936 (around $1800) with a 3 year hardware warranty
