RUMOR: Project Beast (From Software/Sony Japan Studio, PS4) [Port begging = ban]

Because the IP is owned by Sony and if Sony didn't take the chance on the original Demon's Souls, the Souls series wouldn't even be where it is today.

Thank God they were too stupid to see how good demons was so we were able to get dark 1 and 2 on pc. Incompetence of the highest order helped From immensely.

Okay, looks like there actually are. And again we see that the animations in Dark Souls 2 aren't as fine tuned as in the first game.

I don't know what they did or why they even tried to change the animations but the whole character moveset in DS2 definitely felt weightless compared to the previous games.

Anyway hopefully Project Beast will be more like Demon's/Dark1 since the original team is working on it.

A detached area, separate from everything else in the game. Real interconnected there.

The lord souls is how DS2 works. Four separate areas whose only connection with the world is the pathway that leads in. Doesn't help that the levels themselves are rushed as hell and easily the worst areas in any Souls series.
I was more talking of the level's internal design.

I don't think Dark Souls 2 is linear at all, so I guess we agree there.

you'd be losing progress if you did and you'd have to repeat the level since there was only 1 checkpoint at the start.

So? That was part of the choices you had to make. Risk the souls you gathered to save time or go back to the nexus, level up and buy items, and then go back to the area stronger and with more knowledge on how to best tackle it.

The real punchline is when we learn that it's actually a third person shooter.

Really not getting that vibe from those screens, look how close the hero character is to the enemies, and he is in the center of the screen. If it was a 3rd person shooter I'd expect the camera to be more like Resident Evil 4.

Exactly. In DS2 there are so many bonfires that you rarely have to engage in this decision making.

yea, Demon's is still more punishing if you fucked up, imo.

Yosp called it garbage as well (during some TGS event I guess?), don't forget! Sony didn't like it and it was sent out to die in Japan.

Not trying to call you a liar here, but maybe you are not reffering to Yosp.

Yosp actually placed both Demons Souls and Dark Souls in his top 3 pf the generation.
I'm pretty sure he never said it was garbage.

As much as I tried to convince myself I liked DkS2 as much or more than the first, I eventually couldn't do it. It just wouldn't stick. I listened to ENB and VaatiVidya praise it to the sky and really hoped it would live up to the hype, but it didn't. I mean, there are things it does better than the first. but it's kind of like the difference between Doom 3 and the original games - one is more advanced technically (far more so in the case of Doom 3 obviously), but the "soul" is missing, or is much diluted. I think that's what sums up DkS2 to me, anyway. It just shows that there's a certain indefinable something that transcends all merely surface aspects of a game, and Dark Souls had it, while the second one just didn't. You felt the total lack of a defining vision and atmosphere. I understand why people still like the second game, but I'm sorry to break it to them, it's already been decided by history that the first game was miles away "better" in most of the ways that really matter, despite the great things they did with the second game.

Exactly my sentiment, too. Thanks you.
DkS2 is more polished gameplay-wise, but lacks inspiration.

For my personal experience with Demon’s Souls, when it was close to final I spent close to two hours playing it and after two hours I was still standing at the beginning at the game. I said, “This is crap. This is an unbelievably bad game.” So I put it aside.

Luckily, third party publishers, Atlus in North America and Namco in Europe [stepped in], and it really became a great hit outside of Japan.

We definitely dropped the ball from a publishing standpoint, including studio management side. We were not able to see the value of the product we were making.

So basically, this game is exclusive because it is co-developed by Japan Studio (SCEJ) and From Software, all based on the terms of the rumor. Am I correct?

Right, so someone on /v/ (reliable I assume?) claims that Japan Studio is involved with this project?

Ironically, questioning the veracity of those images and their sources, especially knowing it comes from 4chan. The rumor just says that is co-developed by From Software and Japan Studio. Until it is confirmed at E3 or TGS, we will have to go with only those info. Unless, an insider we know finds a way to divulge something that could be worthwhile for us until then.

I believe he did because at the time the build he had seen was pretty bad. Apparently Demons Souls ending up the way it did was somewhat of a big turn around. He obviously loves it now, but I can see how having a bad experience with the original build could lead him to those comments.

Yoshida openly admitted to not seeing the value in Demon's Souls, that was why they passed on publishing outside of Japan. If Atlus did not publish it who knows what might have happened. I am leaning towards it being marked off as a loss and never brought up again.

He alao says that Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are 2 of his favourite PS3 games.

Original, near final build.

He did said it was garbage. But that was probably before the game was completely finished.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida admits that he thought Demon's Souls – a game Sony had the opportunity to publish – was "crap … unbelievably bad."

You realize that's not what I was taking about at all. I'm saying Atlus didn't want the sequel. It wasn't Sony that shot it down. It's obvious From did Dark Souls as a way around the Sony deal and involvement in the original Demons' Souls. And I'm saying that's underhanded. If Sony wasn't interested in the sequel, that would be different, but that wasn't the case.

This leak may be a thorn in the side of their marketing plans, but I think the effect of this news is negligible to anyone but us. You know who us is, figure it out otherwise. I just told my casual buddy the next Souls game got leaked, and he didn't give it anymore than an "oh okay". I think, without anything to show, I think there's very little happening here. They'll have the opportunity to make a splash when they have eye candy footage and hands on articles. Low resolution pictures mean nothing to people who don't already know what a Souls game is.

The interview only mentions framerate problems and the network was not available. Framerate problems are in the final game and mentions that it was a near final build when he decided it was a terrible game.

They only became interested when it became a big success after they passed on it.

Just saw this but before I get excited...
Is this legit or is there actually a chance it's fake?
Has anyone other than the source confirmed it?
Praise the Sun? DeS sequel?
What am I looking at!?

Yep

It will likely be published by Sony too seeing as they are developing it...

Meaning Sony will own the I.P due to the fact that they have decided to always own a I.P that they are publishing after the Crash/Spyro fiasco

That and if this does turn out to be Demon Souls 2, Sony has no need to try and claim it seeing as they already own the I.P

Thanks guys.
I had no idea.

I can't really blame Yosp for not digging it when he tried it for a couple of hours, even if it was basically finished. On the surface of things it's not something that is going to grab you. The frankly ugly custom character maker, slow animations / controls, and high difficulty would make it seem like a bad game.

If you watch the Giant Bomb quick look, for example, Jeff Gerstmann was pretty blase about it, saying that the ideas sound cool but the actual game play looked awful.

Sorta gives me a Chakan the Forever Man vibe. That was pretty much a Sega Genesis version of Demons/Dark souls...you could even consider him to be a hollow since he was cursed by Death to live forever, or at least until all the supernatural evils were slain.

It's more or less confirmed. DemonNIte has been hinting the name (tons of beast puns in relation to hints about unannounced games) for this for a while.

I agree.Actually i think this leak did them more good than harm because now they have the fans to keep the buzz and interest for Sony's E3 conference alive and when it comes the time they properly reveal the trailer and try to win non-fans as well.

FromSoft developing a sequel to Chakan is an idea too perfect for it to ever actually happen.

fuck.

I guess it could be inferred that if the only outlet regurgitating the rumor is a non gaming-centric place like Forbes, that it speaks volumes as to the silence coming from outlets that would undoubtedly know something a bit more like Giantbomb, Kotaku, Polygon, Eurogamer, etc... They wouldn't want to bite the hand that feeds them and risk getting less info slung their way.

Contrast the silence regarding this rumor (that I'm sure is real) with the news stories these same sites ran re: the Fallout 4 ARG that turned out to be fake. It was a rumor but they still ran with it. This? Crickets. I'd say that's even more damning.

I bet these sites are chomping at the bit to post even the tiniest morsel and rake in those hits but can't because of embargoes.
