RUMOR: Project Beast (From Software/Sony Japan Studio, PS4) [Port begging = ban]

I skipped Dark Souls and played only the sequel, and although I really enjoyed it, it lacked the sense of awe Demon's had.

You skipped one hell of a game then. Make sure to catch up on it if possible, because even without comparing it to the other games Dark Souls is a masterpiece on so many levels.

It'll probably be a slow-ass musket style shotgun.
I don't really see how firearms fit into the Souls universe. They make sense in Shadow Tower Abyss's universe, but don't really feel reconcilable in high fantasy. Shadow Tower Abyss focused more on the alien aspects of a game world, and there's a lot of juxtaposition in the images here, that there are both zombies and maybe zombie dogs (ragged looking dogs) and guns gives me a more The Walking Dead-type vibe.

I just noticed this thread and it exploded in a matter of hours into page 90.... so what I gather from the OP is:

.- PS4 exclusive game co-developed by From Sotfware and a Sony Japanese studio.
.- not in any way related to any souls game.
.- these are rumors or leaks, it can still be fake.
.- people asking for a port of a game sony is going to pay for its exclusivity will result in a ban.

Anything else to collect from these 90 pages?

that's incorrect, Sonys paying for the game to be made. period. not for it to be taken away from other consoles. this isn't a moneyhat situation.

I like the idea of guns being present. While I haven't played Shadow Tower Abyss the idea of sparsely found ammo but the possibility of gunplay to be really cool. It seems to match the atmosphere there fine enough

The Souls series are the best! This news got me uber excited, it's funny I was talking to some friends insisting Demon's Souls 2 was being made for PS4... then 5 minutes later this thread broke out!

Well, you may be right, but i still think is very strange that there has been no confirmation so far for a DS2 for PS4/XBO, even with all the hype that would sure have.

I still think that it may have something to do with this Beast game being a PS4 exclusive...
How about not wasting resources in a port when you can focus the development on a fully next gen console.

So, had anyone from Sony or From made any kind of statement about this? Even a "no comment"?
No, but nobody should expect them to.

I do feel like it's a bit strange how grotesque the game looks compared to earlier one. Miyazaki talked about wanting enemies to have "dignity" which seems a bit less apparent in the screenshots.

Still genuinely hoping it's not a sequel, but yeah, if it is a sequel to anything, it's probably more likely Shadow Tower Abyss than anything form the Souls series.

The inclusion of a shotgun as a weapon doesn't all the sudden take away from it being a Souls game. It will still have castles, dungeons, caves, and various other things that make Souls' worlds so interesting to explore. A shotgun won't change that.

At the time of release people were praising DS2 saying it was definitely an improvement in many areas, so I decided to pick it up.

DS2 (IMO) is a major improvement in alot of places, but lacked in a few places (there is less impressive texture work in DS2 compared to DS1).

He also played arguably the best one.

Yea, and I'd argue that all day. Dark Souls is much better than Demon, IMO.

You have been listening to the wrong kind of people. It still is a very good game but the first game is the far superior one.

Dude it totally changes that. Having guns would completely invalidate a high fantasy setting. Those two things just don't mesh. A shotgun in particular changes it even more.

I'd disagree. It'll be no different then any other limited use ranged ability or item. Like a bow, crossbow or spell. I can't imagine we're going to get some spaz pump action gun in there. It'll be double barrels, muskets, flintlock. Slow reloading weapons. Mechanically it won't change anything...stylistically it obviously will.

LOL awful

Wtf man. There are 3 *current gen* consoles out and Sony is funding this game henceforth it's exclusive to the Sony hardware. That's all there is to it.

I don't think so, they have crossbows, so they have a refined sense of ballistics, and seemingly gun powder.

Time is what costs money, if Beast and DS2 went into development at the same time, but this ships a year later, unless the burn rate of 'the A team' is radically less, the budget will be higher.

Eh, they have probably had a skeleton crew on for longer given the longer development time, and most of the Dark Souls 2 team probably shifted over as that project was winding down. There is nothing to suggest that this project has an order of magnitude higher budget than whatever Dark Souls 2 had.

The thought of this game demolishes my hype for almost every other game out there. Souls games are my mother f'n jam man! Will pre order whatever ultimate deluxe mama jamma edition it gets. Please just be real!

If you add guns into a game, you cannot suspend disbelief to the point that you still accept a fantasy setting. Shadow Tower Abyss had the good sense to admit that the time period was past the point of simple melee weapons and that guns were pretty much always the better choice. Melee weapons were used because of the fact that their "ammunition" wasn't limited, but guns in that game were always conserved for tougher enemies. You cannot have a fantasy setting with guns. If you put them in a historical setting it drastically changes the way in which the setting play itself out. Every historical setting or fantasy setting where firearms were added greatly changed the manner in which that environment brought plausibility to itself.

Again, who says this has to be high fantasy or that it's even trying to be? Everything about these screens screams Gothic horror, which definitely leaves room for a variety of firearms.

Almost a million views on a 1 day old topic. Holy shit.

Whats the record on GAF? I'm sure higher, but whats the longest topic, topic with most page views, and quickest rate of views?

Sony got some good marketing out of this one, official or not. It's even hitting the bigger site now.

But the Souls games aren't high fantasy, they're definitely dark fantasy.

I don't think it is trying to be, I think people want it to be. But I agree with this assessment.

I'm pretty sure this has broken the record

Which bigger sites?

Guns invalidate only the cookie-cutter Tolkien brand of fantasy you seem to be referencing.

There's plenty of incredible other branches of fantasy that can incorporate rifles and handguns. And contrary to "real" fantasy, they are often not completely done to death in every medium possible already.

Also, I'm not too hung up on this being part of the Souls series or even using all of the series' main mechanics. As long as it retains the unforgiving difficulty, brilliant level design, and tight combat, they can do whatever they want.

Firearms and all the other weapons made sense, due to over the centuries various people tried to venture deep within the "dungeon" and apparently failed leaving you with various loot to find lol. Was a pretty cool setting actually.

That's because you're thinking of it in a modern style. There were guns being used in real life in the same stylstic shape since the 15th - 16th century though not as prevalent. I'm sure you can find some early 16th century guns on google.

Totally agree. I feel the same. I feel like the series, or the "mise en scène" needs a shakeup to maintain the brilliance. I hope this game is just that.

I am a little burnt out after being at max hype for months over DkS 2 and then playing it for 120+ hours in one month, which is far more than I've ever played any game in a month before, but this gets me super stoked again.

Well I guess it raises the question of what the series is. The inclusion of the Souls suffix means very little really. If this game has it or not shouldn't set certain requirements, it's just marketing. I think they should use the title personally, but we'll see.
