Souls PvP competitive?

Hardy fucking har.

Try the netcode if you want to make it somewhat competitive.

Not the PVP. The game itself. It's about precision and reaction. It's just more fun at a higher framerate. I recommend trying DS1 with DSFix and switch between 30 and 60 on the fly for testing the difference. And then come back here and post your opinion. :)

I would happily buy a PS4 for a souls games IF it were 60FPS. Everyone who played souls on console and PC knows that it is not the same game at a stable 60FPS framerate as the stuttering mess which it is on console. And that is for a game which is so competitive...so yeah, I'm fine with PS4 only, but make it 60FPS.

lol

If you want to talk about "competitive", the very first thing to do is talk about MASSIVE improvements to the actual net code, not worry about a difference of 17ms!

Edit: I see that you were apparently talking about "competitive singleplayer" (huh?), so nevermind.

Don't care if 60 or 30 fps even thought i would like more eye candy .
What From really need to do is have better animation and collision detection because no matter the fps those could use some work .

A locked 30 fps would be a considerable improvement over their previous efforts
And a major downgrade for everyone who enjoyed Souls on PC.

And a major downgrade for everyone who enjoyed Souls on PC. So yeah...I'm not happy about that rumor I must say. If From proved anything in the past then that they can do beautiful art and atmosphere, but they pretty much don't give a shit for tech, especially framerate. It's a hardcore game for the hardcores, so why not provide maximum playability and take a dump on shadow res or tesslation or whatever, if necessary...we'll see.

You're treading dangerous territory, I would chill it with the stealth port begging dude. Don't want to get whacked for a silly thing.

I wonder how dissapointed people will be if this strays too far from the basic Souls formula. Seems to me most people already expect this to be pretty much the same game as previous ones.

Id kinda be disappointed if its the same game. I want a fresh take on the Souls formula.

I agree. The animations in Dark Souls 2 were a step down from the first game. So I really want to see them putting at least the same amount of care into animations they did in the first Dark Souls.

I think it would be interesting if they stuck closer to the original formula with one franchise and used the other to experiment with new ideas.

The decision to use mocap rather than hand animation seems like it didn't work out in their favor. Though I wonder if it was easier on the development staff.

It's not a port beg. I'm wishing that they go for 60FPS on console after experienceing DS1 and 2 at 60FPS on PC in comparison to their console counterparts.

I hope it strays a ton.

An exclusive, after the two Dark Souls games, is the perfect time to take some serious risks with the "series".

Yep. I wouldn't want them to call it dark souls and then stray, but that's not what this looks like. It's a pedigree I trust making a game.

Hype doesn't translate to sales. This thread is 4x bigger than the COD one and yet COD will still outsell this game on a single platform. I'm sure if GT got leaked the thread wouldn't be anywhere near as big as this is, but it would still sell ~10 million copies.

Hype also isn't determined by the quality of the game if you check out the metacritic. Hype = vocal fans shouting.
To be fair the Souls series has a loyal following. I imagine the game will sell pretty well on the PS4.

The framerate in DS1+2 had some pretty bad drops in some areas, DeS less so. I'm saying From has never seemed to prioritize framerate so expecting that of them of them now will probably lead to disappointment.

True.

But it's new hardware, you never know. And maybe, just maybe, they played their own game on the PC with dsfix. ;)

I actually expect this to feel different from the other Souls games in terms of gameplay. Not "King's Field to Demon's Souls"-different, but still having significantly other emphases in combat. Maybe guns aren't just secondary weapons and could be used as primary weapons. Or they completely replace magic powers in this game.

Precision and reaction? This is not Ninja gaiden. Dark souls is a pretty slow paced action game. Enemy animations are slow and have huge delays to allow the player to read the movement and react accordingly. The speed of the rolling action, spell casting and most great or ultra weapons also speak for themselves. This gameplay design is perfectly fit for 30 fps as it doesn't require fast player reflexes at all, just brains to observe and learn.

I'd say Flamelurker was the only boss in the souls series that truely required some reflex skills.

This sounds glorious. I am definitely getting a PS4 this summer, and it's great to have such an interesting title to look forward to. Can't wait for more info!

Any chance I can get on that train?

I feel like removing magic would necessitate big changes to the design/lore of the series. Maybe placing it in a supplementary role would be better than removing it entirely? Of course this assumes the game is meant to be in line with the existing Souls games.

My money is on Christmas/Kwanzaa/Hanukkah this year.
That's why I just put in Demon's Souls and started anew to get the proper levels of chemicals in my brain.

Try the difference yourself and tell me it's not world's better afterwards. :)

Yes, the series has always been more about caution/preparedness than reflexes.

30 vs 60 fps makes a huge difference with parrying and riposting in DS2

My guess for the timeline:

E3: First trailer
TGS: New trailer, Title announcement, [possibly beta phase Nov/Dec]
Feb/Mar 2015: Release the Beast!

Sounds reasonable.

Bwahahahaahahaha!

Its a signifcant difference but not mandatory.

I would rather have better graphics and 30 fps locked than 60 fps and graphics that are worse.

Besides its not like the PS4 is lacking in power and I doubt FROM and SCEJ are going to push it to its limit.

Sorry to sound like a newbie here but why 1 million views here? Does the game have some history with Sony gamers?

Biggest cult hit of lat gen. Souls are considered by many people as the games of the generation. Sequel, now with the creator, for next gen is going to cause a lot of hype.

Sony said at last years e3 that the first year of the PS4 we'd get how many exclusives ? could this possibly count as one of them we would see this year ? maybe towards the end of Q4 Or more likely towards The end of Q3 ?

Not 100% sure if sarcasm radar is broken, but just in case: it's resonating this much (partly) because it might in fact be that rumored sequel / spiritual successor to the PS3 exclusive Demon's Souls which was also co-developed by FROM and Sony Japan Studios. The fact that this new game very likely implies the return of director Hidetaka Miyazaki - who directed Demon's Souls and Dark Souls as well (but NOT Dark Souls 2 - hence the opinion by some, not me necessarily, that this third game is inferior in some ways) - helps a lot too.

The rest of this pre-e3 hype train's speed - it's just GAF going nuts as usual I think ;-)

Edit: jeez, this thread continues to move faster than light. Already 5 responses or so in the few minutes it took me to type mine :-O

So...

I think everyone agrees that this leak seems genuine

Why is no media (giantbomb, gamespot, ign, eurogamer etc) reporting it? They usually report fart less certain rumors

Some sort of nda?

The franchise needs something new. I love DS2 but it's hard to deny that it feels formulaic.
Unlike going from Demon's to Dark, Dark 2 felt like more of the same and not even as good.
A breath of fresh air would be welcome but of course the fundamentals of what makes a Souls game shouldn't be touched.

30 in development, 20 in the first year, 2 have been canned since (Stig's game, SCE London restructuring). Note that this only accounts for SCEWWS's output.

They did report on far more ambiguous rumors than this, so it's strange that major sites haven't picked this up.
I would wait for monday.

Brad from GB reacted weird to the game being mentioned by just saying "yep" a bunch. Could be interpreted as him dancing around the topic cause of an nDa.

Some have commented on it on twitter and such, but considering the source I'm sure they're reluctant to post any sort of news article on it.

Or, yeah, NDA.

Nope. That means it'd have to have been shown. Most of the press have speculated about Demon's Souls 2.

I suspect, it's a few things:

  • That it leaked on Friday evening
  • That most of the rumour's substance comes from 4chan
  • It's harder to verify Japanese stuff for Western journalists.

I dunno if you guys have noticed but there are usually very few if any insights in Japanese game development from western journos whether its leaks, lay offs, deals etc
