RUMOR: Project Beast (From Software/Sony Japan Studio, PS4) [Port begging = ban]

Dark Souls was more than a name change.

Demon's Souls was a hub world, whereas Dark Souls is open world

Demon's Souls used grass as the healing option whereas Dark Souls had the estus flask

Demon's Souls had the Nexus whereas Dark Souls had bonfires

Demon's Souls had world tendency events

There was plenty room for Demon's Souls and Dark Souls to coexist

They were similar enough though. Who's to say that From wouldn't have gone in that direction even without the branding change? We'll never really know.

lol I noticed that too.

Look, if you're going to re-post a rumor then don't cherry pick which parts you put out there. Though they did say "we've reached out to Sony Japan..." so at least the implication is there.

They don't want to anger Microsoft, so that whoever searches PS4 doesn't get a hit on that article.

He's not saying there aren't differences. He's saying that in order for the Souls franchise to be multiplatform, a name change had to occur, since Sony owned "Demon's Souls", an IP they didn't even want at the time.

After Atlus published the game and Dark Souls was a huge success they expressed regret in not seeing the value at the beginning.

It was word of mouth and popularity from the many importers that prompted Atlus to localize it. Demons Souls was very much a fan pushed success. Not trying to downplay Atlus but they aren't the reason the game got its cult following in the West, it was facilitated by it already being in English and no region locks. Perfect conditions.

Except he/she said this:

Dark Souls is basically a expanded sequel to Demon's Souls. The only change they had to make was the name.

Sony's owned the Demon's Souls IP since the game was released. Their regret was that they didn't publish the game outright. Project Beast is their chance to rectify that.

Yep. The fans saw what a great game it was. I still have my Imported copy. Then Atlus was pushing that "Stop Importing It" Edition. lol

To most people, those differences aren't enough to change that wording. We can pick apart the games differences in asthetics, and so on and so fourth, but I don't get that was what he was trying to do, is all I'm saying. At the end of the day, all the Souls games are very similar games in a series developed mostly by the same people, under the same roof (FROM Software).

Yes, Atlus still took a chance and it paid off.

This thread has boiled down to hype train avatar requests, outer space, random mod interjections, and borderline OT banter.

And I love it.

All we need is one more leaked screen and this thread will fly off again at light speed talking about every little detail of it :D

1.1 million views, 6000+ posts, theres only so much one can discuss and say over a couple of blurry images. Its a waiting game now.

1.1 mil / 9 screenshots = 122,222 views per screenshot
6000 post / 9 screenshots = 666 (number of the BEAST :O) posts per screenshot

so 1 more leaked screen would give us 122,222 more views and 666 new posts according to my (probably wrong cause it's too early) math. That makes sense right ;)

Looks legit, looks soulsy enough, Miyazaki has to have been doing something all this time, and I know how to read the word "FROM."

Looks like I have reason to buy a PS4.

I never thought I would have one so soon.

So guys, if this turns out to be real (most probably), do you have any thoughts on how to refresh the Souls games mechanics?

I remember when the first Dark Souls II interview was leaked there were a lot of "theories" about how things like bonfires and bloodstains could work, and while I would enjoy a victorian setting and maybe the addition of guns, I would like to see an evolution of the core Souls mechanics, something that would astonish me, like the first time I heard about the messages/bloodstains in Demon's Soul.

Is it because he is an insider/employee (don't know all the logistics of that) that the comment is so special?
I believe Verendus works at Sony or atleast has an employer that works for Sony.

Although i am too burned out of his secrets/rumors. I honestly haven't seen much of them getting verified. The one that i fondly remember was about FF XV becoming PS4 exclusive and Sony assisting SE with development, and it turned out to be a load of BS after the Xbox One port announcement.

He also keeps talking about FF VII remake in development, and that rumor was shut down by Kitase in a recent interview.

So take it as what you will.
He could be legit for sure, but he also tends to share a lot of "office gossip"

yeah i'm quite surprised very little people caught that back when verendus replied

Its because people have been waiting for it for over 5 years. 5 E3's, 5 TGS's and the result; people thinking the game is vaporware.

Of course its not though, but the anticipation and disappointment has led to disbelief.

I'm still a true TLG believer and I hope that this red Y2 dude will get his crow served soon!

please don't ban me
TLG is dead. It is dead as in the name.

I am quite sure that the actual game is alive, but i don't expect them to re-reveal it with the same name.

disclaimer: I am not an insider, this is my speculation.

P.S Last we heard of the game was back before PS4 launch AFAIK.

The Last Guardian was first announced in 2009, and it hasn't yet been released. I ask whether or not Becker thinks that the more structured environment at Japan Studio will help Fumito Ueda and The Last Guardian.

"We're real-time in that process," Becker replied. "And we don't necessarily agree with each other—Fumito Ueda and I—about process. In some sense, I sort of... implemented change, which, I think, is causing some concern and consternation. But, once again, I think the benefit will come through. We're still going through that phase of adjustment and finding the right balance and groove."

"I think," Becker adds, "it's moving along in the right direction."

All that says is that the game looks good. I'd expect it to look better than a souls game technically, so why is that a surprise? It doesn't say anything about it being revealed at E3 though.

Interesting. Really though, the real clincher for me were Demonite's post. Using "Beast" to constantly describe a future FROM Software title a year plus ago is more than enough confirmation for any person to ever need. Plus, the screens. That's all I need.

It doesn't take a lot to realize that some sites aren't exactly console neutral.

I don't care for or actually go to IGN for anything, nowadays. But, they do state they contacted Sony Japan for comments on the leaks in that article.

For what it's worth Verendus also said it was extremely early into the project, so I doubt Kitase would be in any position to say otherwise.

Do you think the Souls series has gotten big enough to become a system seller?

Personally I think this has potential to become PlayStation's next big IP.

I don't know. You're saying they're fanboys for a giant corporation that probably doesn't give a shit about them. That's a pretty horrible thing to say about someone. I can't think of a lower form of life than a fanboy.

Just looking at the posts here and in youtube a lot of fans are going to get a PS4. Its definitely a system seller especially since the Souls fan base are eager for the games.

However the word system seller is getting more and more obscure. Plenty of exclusives are system sellers but its hard to account for how many systems they sell, unless theres an extraordinary bump.

If Sony markets this right and it turns out to be an exceptional game I can see it being the best selling game in the Souls series (2-3 million). However I don't think it can reach the likes of Uncharted, God of War, TLoU (5-6million+) or even Little Big planet(4.5 million). I would love it to though.

The share feature was made for games like this. Would be great if they begin integrating shares into the game preview (when you hover over the game before you start).

Example: Be able to instantly find gamer made boss walk throughs, hidden areas locations, general tips on builds, best deaths, etc. Great for minimizing the game and searching up help when you've hit a wall.

Heh I can dream can't I.

I agree completely. Hopefully Sony knows they have a sure fire hit with this game and go full force with it. Just looking at the thread views should only confirm it for them.

I wonder if Dark Souls may go the way of Demons Souls and disappear if Beast is a major success.

Demon's Souls franchise could become big, but there is still the Dark Souls IP.
But things are pretty unpredictable right now as FROM had a new ownership and we don't know if they make any Souls games on their own. So its great from Sony to develop this in cooperation with FROM.

Personally I think the other team will work on Armoured Core and who knows what happens after that :p

I hope FROM doesn't confine itself just into the Souls series as they could fatigue their best selling series.

And keep the Souls series a Playstation exclusive from here on out with how much money DS2 has been making on PC? I doubt it.

Hopefully they will avoid pushing out a Souls game every year. Each game has a wealth of content to be explored which has made it one of the very few worth attempting NG+. I can't even think of the last game that put serious thought/content into NG+ like the Souls series does.

Did it really have such huge sales compared to consoles? Not so sure and FROM is still only a dev that has been bought up by a new owner and we still don't know if they can keep working on the Dark Souls IP.

Demon's Souls franchise could become big, but there is still the Dark Souls IP.

The Souls franchise has become big. Now, if they make a new "Demon" game, then we could coin it a new franchise. But that may not even happen. This may be a the third new title to bear the Souls name, and not "Demon's Souls 2". Spritually, Dark Souls IS Demon's Souls 2.

But things are pretty unpredictable right now as FROM had a new ownership and we don't know if they make any Souls games on their own. So its great from Sony to develop this in cooperation with FROM.

Huh? Why can't FROM Software (who just made a new Souls game, and seems to apparently making another), make a Souls game.... err? I'm confused now, so I know you are.

I doubt they will just spin out Souls games. But they are smart, and they know the iron is hot. So strike that shit, they will. With the series only just hitting 3 over the course of 5 years, we are far from fatigued, IMO. Not when companies pump out yearly iterations of games with 6 hour "campaigns" and minor if any changes to actual gameplay.

And didn't they just put out Verdict Day (AC5 Update)?

I don't think it's big enough to be a mainstream system seller, but an enthusiast system seller. Though enthusiasts play a big role on how the rest of the market sees the console.

What I'm saying is I'd consider buying a PS4 for this.

Because they have been bought out by Kudokawa and the deal will be finalized on May 21st. That doesnt necessarily mean that they can't do other Souls games on their own, but it may depend on what their new owner has in mind.
