Valve doesn't speak about that stuff.

There are only like 30 people working on Dota at valve and they're usually working on lots of other stuff. They could plop out the remaining heroes really quick for sure, but instead they're putting out bug fixes and hats and actually cool features. Custom game support in client is coming soon.

Whether that's a good use of their time or not is up to discussion. They aren't the fastest at doing things and whenever they miss something the community is pretty shitty about it (OH MY GOD THEY MISSED DIRETIDE HOW COULD THEY FORGET THAT SUPER LAME MODE) so they're sort of stuck sometimes.

I think they mostly do it so the community as a whole doesn't get overwhelmed. Back when it was a hero or two a week it was mostly people who knew all those and it didn't really effect any meta. Nowadays people don't even know what oracle does, because people have just moved on entirely.

It wasn't about Diretide. It was going for 3 months with barely a peep from Valve, and Diretide was just the final straw when it was first promised as an annual game mode and didn't show up for Halloween.

Them dropping another hat patch on the night people expected Diretide also probably didn't help.

Yeah people turned it into "communication" when they realized they were acting like babies.

As much as I hate the vocal majority, it did get Valve to be a bit more open about their stuff. I'm just disappointed it took that much loudness and obnoxiousness to get a reaction.

SivHD talking about voice chat in online games. SivHD isn't my favorite, but a lot of people really like him, so maybe this will open their eyes to the option.

Completely agree with what he said.

My cousin who mainly plays a jungler gets often flamed by people when he types timers in chat, so he was pretty hyped for the timers and he didn't think they would be abusable ingame since they only showed up if you saw dragon/baron/buffs go down.

I don't get how Riot made Curse remove the timers and still be ok with timers not tied with the client. Whats the difference?

Being with noobs is alot less frustrating also for me with voice chat. Especially in bot games because I can explain to them why item/skill build X is a bad idea and like SivHD said, you don't do that with text based chat because of how long it takes to type, it distracts you from other things because you're typing while I could still be doing stuff like last hitting efficiently with voice chat.

I really don't see why there's so much people against voice chat in lol forums. Why do people keep ignoring the mute function? You can apply the same issues raised about voice chat in lol on text based chat and the issues are easily solved by the mute option.

For games like lol where coordination is so crucial in fights I really think Riot should step up their game and release voice chat ASAP.

I personally believe it reduces toxicity because you can properly express yourself in a short time window, so there's way less frustration caused by miscommunication.

Mmhmm. I recently posted in the League thread that I uninstalled the game, and it was due to toxicity (and general boredom with the game, hell, I've played it for four years).

The very last game I played I had the jungle ping that he was going to gank. One second later he flashes, ghosts, and attacks the opponent. I'm nowhere near him. If there was voice chat I'd shout "NO DON'T GO" and he wouldn't have gone, hopefully. He then proceeded to flame in chat about how shitty I was, that I should be reported, and so on.

Voice chat is a necessity and would reduce toxicity. I love League, but man, Riot is so backwards sometimes.

I dunno, I remember being so hyped for replays in 2012 and then learning it was announced alot earlier and now its still not out. I wonder why it takes so long for things to be released. It would be nice if things didn't need to be hyped for like a month on the pbe before they got released too.

I quit mainly because I was tired of people giving up after 20min with games where a comeback was clearly possible. And because I wanted more variety in my meta.

how is voice chat in dota? I mainly play with gaf so I'm usually just voice chatting with them in league through mumble

all-stars this week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6e0BFoODk8&feature=youtu.be

way different than last year's all-stars where fans voted players from around the world into teams (w/ 2v2s, 1v1s etc.). This year it's a round-robin tournament with the "top" teams of each region, a lot of people feel that it's going to take the fun away from it and that it's basically just a mini-worlds.

oh and I guess I've been in elo heaven ever since I started playing the game, never had things that looked as bad as a lot of people report

Voice chat in Dota works great. It's integrated into the client and is easy to access with PTT or Hot-Mic. The only thing I would change about it is the ability to voice chat while out of game if your in a party.

A lot of people still use Mumble or Vent or Teamspeak though.

You can even use steam's built in voice chat that no one ever remembers exists.

I forget about this too. This is the voice chat through the Steam chat windows right?

no i mean how does it work in practice, like in solo games or games with strangers

Voice chat is active in all games. If you have someone abusing it then you can easily just mute them.

no i mean what is your general anecdotal experience with the system, like do you see it as a general positive addition, something you can't do without, something that you think shouldn't be in, something that doesn't really matter, etc.

I'd say 100% positive. It helps with coordination immensely.

They negatives can be offset with the simple click of a button.

what ballpark percentage of games you guys play (w/ strangerz) would you guys say voice chat is utilized

~25%. It doesn't seem to be used much in pubs unless you have a team that wants to work together.

I could not live without while playing with randoms. I don't have time to type shit out and in the heat of a gank pinging and drawing arrows isn't possible. Saying "go around the back and stun him" allows me to do everything I normally would, gets the point across to even the worst players, and is so much quicker and easier.

Voice is wholly a positive addition. If somebody starts yelling or leaves there mic on just mute it who cares.

I use it all the time, and people respond to it. They may not talk back, but at least they can hear what I'm saying. I'd say like 40ish percent.

It's different than like voice chat in teams with people you know, the conversations are different. There they are more general (oh we lose this late, we should push, we as a team should get magic immunity, the teamfights should be initiated like so) while with randoms it's smaller and more focused (gank here now, buy this item, push bot tower now, initiate!) but still super useful.

Wow, so low. I feel like every game there is at least 1 person who uses voice comms to some degree (aside from me). It's the exception to the rule if I'm not using voice and either I don't notice if someone else doesn't use it or it just never happens because I can't think of the last game there wasn't voice chat.

i feel like there is a pretty high chance that people who have good experiences in game with comm end up friending each other and playing together again, am i wrong about that

Nope, I've friended plenty of people that were just good teammates with voice comms.

Myself is almost always
Then usually 1 or 2 others, if not voice back, at least text back or responses in game based off what I said.

Most of my random friends are voice comm adds.

New champ announced for Infinite Crisis, Sinestro

yiss!

Yay, 'bout time they add someone new rather than a different variety of a same character.

They're actually pretty consistent putting out new champs every few weeks. Even if you're not into the multiverse versions of the Prime characters they're still hitting a pretty wide swath. Blue Beetle came out just last week, Aquaman a couple weeks before that. I think Supergirl and Atrocitus are coming in the near future if rumors are to be believed.

Good, I guess.
what youre not excited for zombie sinestro?
Nah. If anything, I want Jesse Quick or Liberty Belle.

It's too bad they have to release characters that people might conceivably spend actual real world currency on. I'd much rather have them plumb the depths than have a hundred zillion Bat-family characters, and 2-4 multiverse variations of same.

is it just teams made up of the best players?

i might watch that if its not on the same time as eurovision

As far as I know there is 2 competitions.

Invitational: The regional winners of NA LCS, EU LCS, LPL(China), GPL(SEA), and OGN Champion(Corea) competing in a group stage, top four advance to semifinals(bo3) and the final is bo5

Challenge(for fun?): each region voted for 2 of their favorite players to make 2 teams (Ice and Fire) with a player from every region in each team. Team Ice: Froggen(EU), Doublelift(NA), Madlife(Corea), Caomei(China), Archie(SEA), for example. Each day before the Invitational, Ice and Fire will play a few games, different gamemodes every day. Tomorrow is URF, then Hexakill, then Pick-10(people most voted champions), and finally 1v1 and 2v2.

Here is the schedule in your local timezone.

edit: This image explains it.

last year it was fan-voted teams representing different regions playing against each other + special modes
this year it's a mini-worlds tournament plus a fan-voted team occasionally playing in special matches

it's on right now at twitch.tv/riotgames, OMG (Chinese team) is about to play Fnatic (EU team)

the team that is expected to win the whole thing is either SKT T1 (Korean team), or maybe OMG (Chinese team)
C9 (NA team) is playing with a substitute mid player from CLG because their mid player has a collapsed lung

the NA LCS has almost completely revamped their rosters on various teams, but yeah it's a process that's kind of overseen by Riot
I want to say this All-Stars stream is taking a lot of cues from the NALCS (the way they do interviews, the timer in between games, etc.) but I mean, this is the english stream so i dunno if it means anything

Personally I preferred last year's version

I guess one advantage of LCS is that you're less likely to run into the roster cockups Valve has made:

http://www.ongamers.com/articles/ti...aced-by-hehe-united-hgt-and-tongfu/1100-1380/

tl,dr: Valve doesn't bother to actually confirm a roster before sending out invites.

Really I don't see the big deal about this though, as long as they work with teams when there is a real health issue like HGT that forces a team to switch a player out.

It's clear that valve places a lot of importance on the surprise announcement of the invites and the stability of the rosters. I don't know if they need to do this, but I don't know if it's a huge issue aside from possibly being annoying for teams who think they got in but didn't. None of these teams are likely to affect the outcome in any substantial way.

The real issue is that with the expanded qualifier pool, there are not 10 teams that are stable and deserve a qualifier invite in any region. Certainly not outside of China anyway. The America's qualifier pool is a joke.

Now if HGT were to get the boot because of an Illness or even worse, EG because of Fear's injury, then there would be an issue with the system, but I think valve has enough flex to allow for these kinds of situations, they just require some level of team stability so they know that the team that is showing up will be able to be competitive.

Would it be nice if the phoned ahead to verify rosters? Sure, but it would make it damn hard to keep the invites a secret in that situation.

i like that dota does invitations, makes it sound like a black tie formal or those movies where you have different characters in places around the world and they get a mysterious letter bringing together for a martial arts tournament
