Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Remakes Announced for 3DS

The moment when I first saw my reflection in Ruby...

that was some next gen GBA shit.

To this day! Man those reflections..

How is XP carved up in battle in this one? I've only played Black/White and currently X/Y, and I find the systems used in both a little unsatisfactory. For instance, one of the more interesting things for me in B/W levelling up low level Pokemon in higher level areas (you know, having the low-level Pokemon as the default choice at the start of battle, then swapping it out straight away so I could win easily and it would get a share of XP.) Of course, the XP share item was an option too, and X/Y negates the need to do this with its XP share item for the whole party.

But, and this is probably just based on my own way of playing B/W, I think it would have be interesting if they introduced a more complex risk-and-reward system for sharing XP. Like the Pokemon that delivers the killer blow causing the opponent to faint could get, say, 40% of the available XP, with the rest shared in smaller portions according to factors like number of turns a particular pokemon spent participating, number of attacks it successfully landed, total amount of opponent HP it deducted, and so on. Something like that could be a lot of fun for leveling up, like do I risk swapping in a low level one to deliver the final hit to an almost fainting opponent, thus getting the lion's share of XP?

Also, I'm guessing we'll be able to transfer pokemon from X/Y to this without using the app that costs actual money. I hope so, anyhow, since the reason given for that was the challenges of getting DS and 3DS software to talk to each other.

You should be able to trade, yeah

Heh, I just realized.

You can transfer your RSE mons to Gen 4, then transfer them to Gen 5, then upload them to PokeBank, then load them to ORAS.

Your original RSE mons now live in a remodeled version!

No, they didn't. They had a form flag for Kyurem, but not for those three or Keldeo.

So that means you couldn't use Origin forms or fusion Kyurem when fighting someone with BW?

I personally think it's the worst iteration in the series, but that's not saying much-- still a very good game. But it still dropped some features like you said, and had nothing special like the bug contest they had in Gold/Silver.
I agree with everyone that it had too much water (surfing and diving..) and too little variety in Pokemon, but all these issues can be easily rectified in a remake (more Pokemon, the way XY treats HMs, maybe add a couple more land locations in the midst..)
They didn't have the bug contests, but they did have contests lol. Don't say there was nothing special. Also, Day/Night was basically the only
major feature dropped.

No, you can. Those form flags are irrelevant.

Going back to XY after getting this news, I think I remembered what makes it my favorite Pokemon game. Everything just runs so smoothly! Saving takes half a second instead of half a minute, there's no lag at all when navigating menus, and you don't feel like you're slogging through water when moving Pokemon around in boxes (see BW2). If these new games have those features alone in my favorite region, these games should easily be my favorites!

I've never played the 3rd generation so apologies if I'm mistaken, but I seem to remember a lot of people hating on it since it dropped a lot of features from gen 2 like the day / night cycle. Was the dislike an overreaction at the time?

Yeah, but the games aged well and some of the most apparent points of dislike are less important than they were back in the day. Plus some nostalgia probably. But yeah, after RuSa was released the reception was mixed among the fanbase, but most of them eventually came around.

Unlike the rest of the sound team members, Sato's one of Game Freak's head game designers! I wouldn't be surprised if her lack of tracks on the new album is due to working so hard on the game itself. This also means that she'll always have to split duties even on remakes, whereas lazy Ichinose usually just wants to do music (which isn't always the case, since he did Soriti Horse recently). Both musicians do great keyboard work, so we're alright.

Wow! I didn't realise this! Thanks for letting me know!! I was actually really sad when she was under-represented in X and Y...b-b-but I can never blame my favourite Pokémon composer for X & Y's poor game design :(

Well I'm not sure how X and Y are coded but if Gamrefreak had OR/AS already in mind the solutions seems easy. I admit it needs a bit of "forward-coding" on the games part though they could stop X and Y from going online if someone doesn't have the patch, if I remember correctly Mario Kart 7 already did that. And in the case someone trades something to X and Y that doesn't exist natively and someone tries to play this save-game again without the patch for whatever reason it could display a message: "You have some Pokémon that are reliant on patch data which wasn't found on this 3DS system. The affected Pokémon have been moved to a special box and are unavailable until the patch data is restored. Please connect to the internet to redownload the patch or insert a SD card with the appropriate data."

I would imagine that Gamefreak atleast thought of the possibility of future 3DS games having to be compatible with X and Y to a certain extend so I wouldn't be too surprised if something is already in place with patches in mind.

X & Y did that already with 1.2 which fixed various glitches that allowed interception online :)

Oh right I forgot about that, so that's one thing less to worry about :)

I really want to go and play X/Y again now, I remember finishing the E4 and then stopping because I had little time by then though I now feel a bit disconnected and don't remember what I wanted to do in the post-game... :P Actually scratch that, I should finally finish White 2 to get this Latias :(

Does the new gamplay being shown tomorrow mean that they were planning to reveal the games in such a random way from the beginning? I think I remember reading that these are pre-recorded a few weeks ahead unless that's changed.

Masuda was doing a countdown on Twitter, so it was obviously planned well in advance.

XY has the best mechanics to date, unless you meant one player experience.

Yes. Pokémon Get TV was filmed last month. Masuda was also doing a countdown for days and made cryptic hints about it.

Contrary to what people believe, the revelation wasn't a knee-jerk reaction to the financials

Still, you have to admit it was very well-planned timing if not an outright coincidence.

Na, coincidence methinks.

In fact, they revealed Black & White, Black 2 & White 2 and HeartGold & SoulSilver just as titles first and then, later that month, showed the first footage and screenshots

HeartGold & SoulSilver
Initial title reveal: May 8th 2009
First footage on Pokémon Sunday: May 10th 2009
First screenshots: May 15th 2009

Black & White:
Initial reveal of existence: January 29th 2010 (Just that new main games were coming)
Title & logo: April 9th 2010
First images (official): April 15th 2010. CoroCoro leaked a few days prior

Black 2 & White 2:
Initial title reveal: February 26th 2012 (Black & White Kyurem revealed)
Box-art: March 15th 2012
First screenshots: April 15th 2012

Sorry, forgot about contests because I only tried them once or twice before I called it quits (same with their reappearance in the sequels).

They stop remaking them, and carry on making originals instead.

But people will want to go back to those regions eventually, and to do another remake cycle would be pretty ridiculous. Double-prefixed version names?
I could see some sort of subscription-based multi-region game happening, maybe lumped in with the Bank service.

They can go ahead and remake those regions as post-game content / post Elite 4 content like Kanto is in Gold/Silver.

The remakes go FireRed/LeafGreen, HeartGold/SoulSilver, OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire, and they might decide to remake Diamond and Pearl, but after that I don't think they need to do any more remakes.

The bigger question is what they do once they start looping around to games which have already been remade. They really can't keep doing this forever.

Well, Ruby & Sapphire came out 12 years ago. There are veteran players who started with them (doesn't that make you feel old? -_-). They are, to those players, what Red & Blue are to others, including myself. Next gen, assuming it starts 2016 or 2017, could have DP remakes in it and be after a similar amount of time.

Well, actually, why can't they? If they keep having one mainline entry and one remake entry per generation (and not see another freak occurrence like the DS era, but it's still possible if we have two), we should have enough distance between originals and remakes for it to keep going well into the foreseeable future.

Of course they can, there's always a market to serve for remakes as long as the franchise keeps pumping out actual original games.

Wha.. what
Why is this coming out of nowhere? Why wouldn't they show this off at E3?

This is bizarre as hell.

Maybe so people will watch their E3 conference where they might show us more. I'm not sure though, but it seems like that might be the plan. Get more views for their show

Well, uh, gonna need a clarification on that.

I just realized that this game will probably have Pokemon from Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos. That's a lot of Pokemon added to the already huge amount of Hoenn Pokemon.

Not gonna lie but Sinnoh will probably be the best remake if they fix all that HM nonsense. Just make them regular TMs. Look at Flash and dig.

Rock Smash too.

Completely agreed. I'm hyped as fuck for Sinnoh remakes now that they're next to be announced (even though it won't happen for 4-5 years.)

Dig was never an HM. But I guess HM's might be a bit less necessary now that TM's are infinite use. I wouldn't mind them so much if I could just easily switch Rock Smash or Dive back to a different TM when I was done with the move.

I was kinda pointing out how Dig acts like a HM (can use in or out of battle).
