New DRIVECLUB videos - Clubs, Face-offs, Challenges

But why the hell would they not show it? It is too big a feature to just surprise people at the last minute. That alone could be a big draw for many. They also said this last year

Obviously, what we're currently focussed on is getting the game perfect and building a community around it first, but if there is a call for weather effects, nothing is currently off the cards at this point.

So there is weather, but not weather effects? So confusing! If this is just cloud and fog, they should just use some other term like "Cloud conditions"

I hope all this social stuff does not hinder progression for those fools (like me) that are only interested in racing. I couldn't care less about this "Club" non sense. Give me cars, give me tracks, everything else is superfluous.

Hmm?

How do you mean?
I mean I'm absolutely not interested in the sharing stuff, Club thing they advertise. I just want to drive sport cars in beautiful environments. I hope unlocking cars and locations does not become a grind when you don't want to force yourself into a Club... Basically, can I play this game as a PGR-like game ignoring all the Club stuff?

Oh I see, what you are saying.

I am pretty sure the sp will give you everything you need.

"Choose any race type, location, track, time of day, time lapse speed, weather and crowd size."

Let's see some snow.

You could always form a club of six people who don't like the idea of being in a club.

As the founder of Discordianism (The Paratheo-Anametamystikhood Of Eris Esoteric), Malaclypse the Younger, K.S.C once proclaimed, "We Discordians must all stick apart".

Wise words, those.

Keep your expectations low people, it's better to be pleasantly surprised than be disappointed.

Weather could also be taken to mean how much standing water is on the road.

Though I agree, I don't think "pleasantly" surprised is the right phrase. This thing could kill me!

Last topic I posted the link disappear . :)

apologies, i read that as they "won't disappoint". was expecting gameplay footage.

then i saw actual gameplay footage from today so all is forgotten/forgiven even before i noticed my mistake :)

These explanatory videos feel more like teasers as I still don't really know how this is actually going to work in a live multiplayer race with multiple cars on track. Some kind of points based result?

Do we know if this a purely matchmaking, quick race type thing (with club/solo options) or can I host proper lobbies (public/private)? Is the player count still 12?

Are lobbies based around clubs or can I ignore the club system entirely and just race with pre-existing racing friends (more than 6!).

If I can host proper lobbies, what can I customise and define as the rules? It sounds like you can set lots of location orientated settings (weather/time of day/time lapse/track/crowd size) and a few race related ones (type/car). Presumably "car" also means class or selection of cars? They make no mention of race length, are all tracks point-to-point? Is there any tyre wear/mechanical damage options? Can a host set penalties for collisions?

Whether you're all about playing hard...

*flash driver smashing another off track*

or fair... nailing the apex...

*flash driver nowhere near the apex*

or drifting sideways. You can do what you want.

Is the level of public online racing going to be essentially everyone is off or into someone else on the first corner and you win by best surviving the carnage?

When it comes to clubs I have to say I am already starting to abhore the size limitation (at least with the current information). I get what they are trying to do but six is a really difficult number, 12/16 really isn't really that much less close knit (I refuse to use the word intimate when related to racing!).

It's probably going to be fine for people with a few close friends or lots or casual gaming acquaintances but I know loads of online racers with regular groups of 10 - 16 which are going to be really hard to split into groups of 6. I often used to host full 16 man lobbies in GT5 (less often in GT6) where every participant was around most weeks.

As the clubs feel like they are meant for competing against each other rather than amongst themselves there's probably going to be no point organising by leagues (derived from performance in time trials) as we have done in the past for races with more than the lobby limit in any given game.

Need more details Evolution. Thanks guys!

So, we will have dozens of 6-man #GAFCLUBS trying to compete with eachother?

This could be really awesome. The smaller member count gives rise to some real inter-club competition instead of a big huge GAF-driveclub that has 85% inactive members.
Haha this so much

Great set of questions. Most of them need to be clarified by Evo

Is the player count still 12?

Yes. That's why they decided to do 6v6. But they seem to be open to changing that post release based on player feedback. There is a high probability that all 6 are not always available. 12 would imply that a lot of people need to sit out in each club vs club race. Something like 8 may be ideal. We'll need to see how it pans out.

This is probably going to happen a lot. They haven't hinted at any penalties for crashing (though there seems to be fame points for not crashing, which contributes to the individuals' and clubs' progress). There isn't any performance damage, so it's not going to be impossible to catch up. Will people be able to define penalties for their custom races? No idea.

Is there any tyre wear/mechanical damage options?

No

Its cool man :)

I like the tagline Drive Together Win Together.

Sounds really good.
The social aspects and challenges are the most promising part of the game for me. So far most of the focus has been on the pretty graphics but I wanna hear/see more of this stuff to get me hyped.

Thanks for the response viveks. They're mostly hypothetical I guess, thinking out loud. I doubt I'll find out many of the details I'm interested in until after release but these types of videos (content, not presentation) are a step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned.

Showing off the pretty graphics is great for the fine dining crowd but I'm really curious about the meat and potatoes.

Twelve is tolerable for a lobby limit but obviously I'd prefer larger. :)

In my experience large grids make for better racing especially when there are multiple skill levels involved (which outside of leagues is basically always the case online). The entire grid may indeed spread out but smaller battles develop amongst groups within skill levels and you might not end up getting a sniff at a podium but instead have an awesome battle for a mid table position.

Simply put, and of course broadly speaking, the larger the grid, the more chance there is of getting people who lap at roughly the same rate.

With reference to clubs, I guess I come from a position where an online racing club is about inter-club competition. For me it's a way of of getting like minded and similarly skilled folk together in order to race amongst themselves, a gateway if you like. Positioning them as groups to compete against other clubs seems to play into a different ethos/mindset, catering more to pre-existing groups rather than as an aid to discovery.

I suspect with regards to first corner carnage you're going to be right, I've watched the game-play videos a few times now and the tracks certainly don't seem to encourage three wide racing! :)

If the online is lobby based then hopefully the host will have half decent tools to help define a lobby in such way it encourages the style of racing a host wants (in my case clean and close) and beyond that maintain the level of racing (kick/penalty options/win ballast or performance rules).

*dreams*

If there was a post race incident review system it would instantly go to the top of my "racers that helps hosts run a good lobby" list for sure but that is wish list kind of stuff...

Anyway, thanks again for the response viveks, hopefully Evo give all of us racing fans a few more nuggets of multi-player information to mull over before launch.

I wanna hear/see more of this stuff to get me hyped.

This.

I felt like I'd been necrobumped this morning, and I only went out for a few hours yesterday!

OT: This game could do with a necrobump it's been delayed that long, right guys? Eh?! Eh :(

You can play it without an internet connection so there's no way the social stuff can hinder your enjoyment.

But if I understood well, without online play - and asynchrounous challenges - there is no "Fame" and "Fame" will be important for something. So I guess you can play offline only, but many of game will be missed.

You can still get 'fame' for doing donuts in car parks, if you have to play offline.

Fame is to do with online and you said you didn't want any online features getting in the way of your enjoyment. I'm confused. You still get fame offline though. It remembers what you got when you go online and updates your profile accordingly.

Snow, rain, hail, ice on the road, lighting, high winds and fog please! And if you can throw in a few flooded sections of the road, I'll take that too thanks.

I hope they have tornadoes, hurricanes and tsunamis in the game.

I'm definitely looking forward to the collapsing skyscraper level!

(Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease put a small team onto the Motorstorm Quadrilogy HD pack, Evolution/Sony. Give those games another crack at fame)

We have too many people living in dreamland. Weather effects in DriveClub will be limited to Sunshine, Clouds and maybe fog.

Rain, Snow, Sleet, Tornadoes, and Hurricanes are figments of people's imagination. Wait for DriveClub 2.

Fog in particular is something I'd like to see, for gameplay's sake. It also seems like with what we've seen of their particle/cloud implementation would make it fairly simple to work into the existing framework.

Also, this lighting mixed with fog could look incredible.

Presumably offline "Fame" (I wanna live forever, I'm gonna learn how to fly) will be earned simply by winning events and beating your own personal bests in the segmented challenges during the actual races.

The social interactivity stuff generally sounds a bit like NFS' autolog or Forza's rivals turned up to eleven. It could be a great meta-game or it could be mildly annoying...

POP-UP - Dave has just set a club record time through sector one, track seven, India. Press X to challenge Dave NOW.

*a minute later*

POP-UP - Dave has just scored more points than you drifting round corner three, sector two, track seven, India. Press X to show Dave who's boss.

*thirty seconds later*

POP-UP - Wow monster drift, Dave has beaten your longest drift in sector three, track seven, India. Press X to try to rub Dave's nose in his increasingly smug sounding notifications.

On a semi-related note your comment and all this talk of weather reminded me of one of my favourite TouriTobi videos...

What happens in the Eiffel Mountains, stays in the Eiffel Mountains

As usual, one tiny little thing and every body starts going crazy with expectations. I would not expect anything more than sunny, overcast, or cloudy. For me just having any time of day available on any track is good enough. Sure, I would love to see snow and rain, but I'm 100% sure snow is out of the question and 50% sure rain is out of the question. I'm keeping my expectations in check.

DRIVECLUB is at its best when you’re connected, as you’ll always have fresh and exciting new challenges around every corner. It’s up to you how you play, when you play and who you play with. You can play solo if you want: online or offline. There’s a full single-player campaign for you along with the ability to set up your own events, which will all help you earn access to new cars and rewards. Everything is better when you’re online though, connected to friends and playing in a club, sharing every moment and competing in engaging challenges.
In DRIVECLUB every action you perform, whether that’s drifting in style, reaching insane top speeds or drafting an opponent to set up an overtake, you earn FAME.

When you earn enough fame you level up and when you do you unlock new cars to race with! The same goes for you club. When your club reaches specific levels you’ll earn new cars, which everyone in the club gets immediate access to. It’s a simple and focussed approach that allows everyone to help each other to earn more and play more.
