Gotta love how ESPN makes the NFL drag out the random executive for the announcment. Not that it isn't a big moment for sure. Good for him, and good for the NFL.

MLB, NHL, you're up.

They keep saying that the time to win is now. They picked a goddamned tight end luxury weapon tenth overall. If the offense is not unstoppable this year, then it will never work with Stafford at the helm and it will be time to completely blow up and rebuild the team. No Stafford, no Calvin (not in any meaningful capacity by that point, with his body breaking down), sure as fuck no Suh, probably not Fairley. Pick up a new quarterback and hope for a brighter future two years down the line from then.

Maybe that's the plan. This works out this year, or the likes or Suh and stafford get the boot and it frees up greater than 50% of the salary cap next year.

He's usually quite talkative on twitter...hasn't said anything since day one of the draft. I feel bad for the guy.

Taking a TE at 10 is the type of thing you do as a luxury, or as that final piece. This team isn't in either position. I know people keep throwing out Jimmy Graham comparisons but Graham is bigger and faster (and was a third round draft pick iirc). This is a guy who had 3 touchdowns last year. Three. I understand NC was more of a run team and had a meh QB (I'm watching Ebron's highlights against Duke right now, QB is making some low and behind passes) but still...if this guy is as much of a threat why isn't he scoring more?

What's going to be an acceptable level of production for him this year, btw. Pre-draft I figured we'd get a second or third round WR who could get 300-400 yards as our #3 behind Megatron and Tate, who I'd imagine could be easily surpass 1,000 yards. Ebron should have plenty of looks over the middle, let's see what he does. I'm sure he'll make plays, I just don't think he'll make enough to justify this pick.

Final point: this is why the Lions are the Lions, and GB is GB (and the Bears are the Bears). I watched GB get better on defense, taking Clinton-Dix and some other solid guys. Then I saw them reload offensively in the later rounds with some WRs who slipped. I saw the Bears reload defensively, after the injuries they suffered last season. Meanwhile we reached for a TE and picked up a couple small school projects in later rounds. And yes I think Larry Webster could be good, and I like the guy from Princeton...but these guys aren't "win now" picks.

And long-term is still putting faith in Josh Gordon to not do anything else stupid after 6 offenses in college and the NFL?

They're going to need a WR eventually, with or without Josh Gordon and it was on the list of needed positions before the news about Gordon broke.

It's not being reactionary if many people think they should have picked one up BEFORE the news about Gordon broke, but it made a hell of a lot more sense after the news.

QB's need multiple weapons. Hawkins was a good pickup at least.

Wr isnt that difficult to acquire. One of the easier positions.

Troy Vincent actually said that there were five openly gay players on the 2000-2004 Philadelphia Eagles. Everyone knew they were gay, and it didn't really cause any issues.

No one has outed those players either. This is the first time it has happened in the public though. Happy for Sam. Hope he ends up being a player. He has a lot of competition in front of him in St. Louis.

Someone was doing an analysis of Lewan and showed that he hadn't picked up a single specific gap blitz successfully all year. I think that would have been worse than Ebron.

That said, other than that CB (who I bet doesn't even make it out of camp), it was a decent draft.

It's not social progress until a gay man can get into the NFL with out being paraded by the media and the NFL doesn't have to live in fear of the backlash if he isn't on a team.

Basically when hes treated like everyone else.
 
He may not be good, but it is a big deal since he is the only out gay man in the NFL. It's progress.

Need more players to feel comfortable doing that for your scenario to happen. He is out and hopefully if he isn't treated like shit more players will follow and it will eventually be seen as normal.

There are degrees and one indication that things are changing is that an NFL team would draft an openly gay man. This has happened. To immediately jump to no one saying a word is strange. And really, in most cases, it has changed. People don't care that Ellen is gay and haven't for years. In the NFL, and professional sports in general, they aren't there yet.

Also Jackie Robinson had alot of talent and shut up any haters, this is a guy even lucky to be on an NFL team and hes being talked about more than the first round picks.

I noted a few days earlier that you seem to have a problem with gay people, or at least stating your opinion about them, when you were in the Tomodachi Life thread about it. You may want to rethink it because you kinda come off pretty negative for no apparent reason. If you're interested in talking about it by all means send me a PM.

Sam isn't Manziel. He isn't a cocky ahole from Texas. You should worry more about that, although him being on the Browns should help that a bit. Although ironically Sam IS from Texas as well.
 
Cool that Sam got drafted. I can only imagine the news stories that would have been all over if no team took him. Good for the Rams, he'll be a good fit there.

My Packers had a pretty good draft. Got Rodgers some new weapons and helped the D.

I don't mean to come off that way, and its not really the impression I wanna make on the Gaf community, Its just I'm tired off all the talk and what feels like over reactions.

He's gay, I don't care, thats fine. Wait, if he isn't taken then the NFL is a bunch of bigots? now I have a problem.

And now he's constantly being talked about on every football media around and will be for months to come for being gay, not for his talent. I'm sick of it.

Its fine to be gay but I wish it could be done with out making a huge deal about it, I don't think any less of Sam because hes gay, it's the community/media around him that sets me off. I actually defended Sam a few times from bigots who straight up said they didn't want him for that reason.

I just want football to be about football, videogames to be about videogames, if gays are apart of it, fine, just don't make it the main subject.

I can kinda understand your perspective but in reality, what you really have a problem with is the media, not with Sam. It was the same reason I've stopped watching ESPN since they couldn't stop talking about Tebow. And this is far bigger news, IMO. Not everything is as black and white as you want it to be.

A lot of the most interesting stories about athletes come from them overcoming adversity, and I'm sure the first openly gay NFL player has done some of that. The same reason you'd be interested in watching a story about Darryl Strawberry coming back from his cocaine addiction or something similar.
 
I think my jags had one of the best drafts this year. We drafted a qb and two wr's who will be discussed for years. Some of our late picks could have went earlier.

Diva, not considered a leader, teammates didn't go to bat for him, and he has a reality television show with his fiance. Plus he skipped the Senior Bowl which puzzled teams even more.

He cost himself a lot of money. You gotta wonder who is giving him advice, because it just doesn't make sense.

Well somebody had him convinced he might go at #16 so...yeah, he hasn't surrounded himself with the best people to help him through this.

Wanted no part of him on the Bucs. I did know that much.

also regarding Sam, I'd say that its probably only the older coaches that have a problem with open homosexuality. Can't see teammates who were children when Massachusetts began to allow same-sex marriage giving a shit.
