Sunset Overdrive Gameplay Footage [Up: Official Trailer released!]

What kind of bad comparison are you trying to make here?

They are totally different in the genre of "Open world third person shooter with emphasis on movement"?

Yes.

If that is as specific as you are being then how do you even try to defend the Mario Kart and Project Cars comparison where one is a simulation racer with real cars on real tracks and the other is an arcade kart racer with fictional entities driving and flying upside down on a rainbow road suspended in space disregarding the laws of gravity as understood by humans in 2014.

Because they both share a broad genre: a lap-based racing game.

inFAMOUS: Second Son and Sunset Overdrive are hugely different games. If you really can't see that then you clearly haven't understood either of them terribly well.

Same here, man. Finished it about three times now. I agree with you but the similarities are non-existent. I can't think of a single similarity other than the open-world design.

That's not true though...

They are both open-world, third person shooters with an emphasis on movement and traversal. That's enough that some comparison is warranted.

However I do agree it's getting a bit silly that pretty much the entire thread for the last few pages has been discussing Infamous.

You repeating the assertion is surely going to sway everyone that disagrees.

Yes, of course. A lot of open-world games generally have an emphasis on movement. inFAMOUS: Second Son's is through superpowers, as is Crackdown. Sunset Overdrive isn't. It's emphasis is based on something more akin, if anything, to BioShock: Infinite.

Both games play (or at least in Sunset's case, appear to play) completely different from one another. Making a comparison between them simply because both 'encourage the player to move around' dilutes their respective identities.

One of the previews (can't remember which) said that Sunset's movement design is specifically encouraging players to explore the city's locations and not merely just "go in a straight line" across geometry, a tactic I – and probably others – used in inFAMOUS.

Oh boy, you can't even be consistent across two posts made in the last few minutes.

Sunset Overdrive is as far away as you can get from inFAMOUS: Second Son. Literally the only thing in common is the fact it's open world. It's a really dumb comparison. If anything, its most symbiotic partner would be Crackdown 2.

Either you worded that really badly, or you went into opposite land.

Hopefully so, if you look at the games referenced such as Tony Hawks, Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio , those games all have cleverly designed lines or paths of travel, made up of ramps, shortcuts, grind rails which partly rely on clever design , but also the user's ability to move between them.

Crackdown ≠ Crackdown 2. I made the comparison in relation to the game world being filled with mutants.

I'm 99% sure super powers will help with traversal at some point. The air dash alone is proof of that. But the focus of the game is not liberty or being a super hero. Is killing mooks with crazy weapons.

Very, very long thread but having watched the trailer a few times this basically looks like Ratchet and Clank, but without the characters.

This is not a bad thing at all. Hope all the Bone owners have fun with it, as a Ps4 guy I'm jealous!

Yes, a lot of open world games emphasize movement. The thing is, Sunset Overdrive is similar to them as well. You can easily draw comparisons to Crackdown, especially Crackdown 2.

You seem to be arguing there are no similarities one minute and then that the similarities don't count in the next. The fact that they both emphasize movement means that comparisons can be drawn, just as you did in this very post. There's nothing wrong with this.

And of course they will play differently, they're different games. That doesn't mean they can't share similarities, which they do.

This is basically what I'm trying to get at. It's incorrect to suggest that it's a "me too" game or a "rip-off" of inFAMOUS merely for the reasons you mentioned. It's going to share some key similarities, obviously – that's part of the genre. But there are so many key differences between the game's visual style, mechanics, design, approach, and navigation, that it's just flat-out wrong to say they're one and the same.

I never claimed that. I completely disagree with the posts stating that it was.

I was just saying they do share more similarities than just open world design and that they can share these similarities whilst still being completely different games.

I never said you did. I was contributing to your point of view. When I quote someone it doesn't mean I disagree with them! :)

Don't be jealous, get a bone as well

Oh god i was sad because I thought Nintendo threads were full of trolls but it seems Xbox One owners are well served too.

Sadly I have both Xbox One (the "inferior" next gen system that gets this "shitty" game) and Wii U (the evil Nintendo system with no games at all). I'm happy to also have a PS4 :p (edit : this line is /s of course)

Regarding Sunset Overdrive I find the game really appealing but sense of speed could be better and some graphical effects are not very well rendered imo (the speed tail in some sequence doesn't produce any sense of speed... or doesn't make the feel of it more important).
I've passed so many hours playing JSR that if they manage to reach the same feeling of city traversal I could even buy it just so I can move into levels just for fun.

Now I'm going to see if there's more gameplay videos. I'm a little bit mixed up about the game's gameplay mechanics.

Wonder if Troy Baker will be a VA.

It would be brilliant for AusRoachman if he was, especially if he played the douchey teen.

If you peeped out from under your Koopa shell duvet a little more often, you might realise there are trolls against every system.

I don't want to see you complaining when somebody criticises SO, okay.

Actually I expect overdrive to probably have some terrible characters as well so your probably right, my point is all these troll comparisons are getting ridiculous .

Overdrive is about fun, goofy powers and silly combat whereas infamous seems the exact opposite (more grounded story, more grounded powers)

Unless I missed the tornado throwing bat in infamous.

Just to fill you in on a little of what we know, the speed tail is a vanity amp, it can have it's color changed, or not used at all. They also mentioned that it's tough to find that sweet spot between grinding at a good pace, and going slow enough to allow you to aim and shoot.

Good news if we can adjust it or turn it off :)

Regarding the sense of speed it's not easy to find a good balance, you're right but even in JSR lots of things needed you to do quick actions on the controller while grinding.
I'm not worried, we'll soon have lots of gameplay videos and previews so I'm just happy that the games goes well for now. I really like the art style and the color palette.

I'll buy this month' Edge edition. Bedtime reading is the best way to discover what could become a great new IP.

I don't see Infamous comparisons at all. It does remind me of Dead Rising with Bioshock Infinite's skyline system, though. The skylines added a lot of fun to the combat of that game, but the mindless horde enemy types don't do a whole lot for me. Things with hordes need co-op.

This. If this game has four, or more, player co-op I will get it day one.

That's fine, but why not set the tone for the better? There are people with an interest in this game, enjoying the hype and wishing it well that only own PS4s, WiiUs or Vitas and don't want to read so much negativity from both sides.

It's E3 month nearly, the month when we should all stop firing shells across the trenches and celebrate games, the consoles and the hype - no matter which side we might fall on :)

When was that?

I can find hundreds of such posts that shit on any game and are dismissive. I don't remember a time when a single post like that was immediately followed with a banhammer.

What isn't fine is if those posters continue to shit on a game they've expressed no interest in the future in all threads that follow.

It's not necessarily about the banhammer, just the enforcement of rules and ensuring that some form of sensible discourse is followed.

The current volume of drive-by posting that often derails threads across the forum is pretty hard to ignore. It's not something that's limited to X1 threads either...

If we're going to talk about how it would be better if someone had to explain their point of view and not just drive-by post, then I'm 100% with you.

My point just was that I don't think it was better in the past and certainly isn't in other threads.

I'm not sure making it faster is a good idea, the faster the traversal is the simpler the combat will have to be to balance it. I'll trust Insomniac to make that call rather than deciding after watching a trailer.

I'm glad they showed gameplay finally and it looks interesting but oh my god the horrible 2D sprites bother the hell out of me. I really hope they are place holders because it sticks out so bad.

Has anything been mentioned on local multiplayer? Given the style of the game, it just seems that it would benefit immensely from having split screen competitive/co-op play...

I didn't realize there were rules about criticizing other games in a thread like this.

Why has this thread turned into an Infamous Vs Sunset Overdrive thread?

You guys, too easy. haha. j/k

You know what... no, fuck this "You guys, too easy." BS. Posts like yours do not help the topic at all, and are just as bad as if you were serious. You're not some master Poker player, you're simply making a shit drive-by post, that is 100% indistinguishable from any other drive-by post, and that happens with no effort whatsoever. I could walk into any thread, post the equivalent of your post and that wouldn't suddenly be an accomplishment to get a response from people saying that I'm being stupid... because I would be. We shouldn't be expected to sit by ignoring all the ridiculous posts people shit up a thread with, or be expected to sift through someone's post history (which actually wouldn't help in this particular case btw) in order to determine they're joking.

"LOL! I was only joking" is a poor excuse for making shit posts.

Yeah it's pretty lame, I don't even get why you would troll in regards to video games.

Yes, it is lame.. and I don't know why you're doing it, if you know yourself how lame it is.
